Healthy Ride report – May 17th 2014

Seventeen riders at Canada Water at 9.30 for the first Healthy Ride + extended ride.  This was to be a feeder for the LCC Big Ride.  Weather was sunny as we made our way from Canada Water to Elephant and Castle with Werner leading.  At the Elephant met up with Andy’s feeder ride from Peckham Rye Common.  The reason we were at the Elephant was to mark the fatal collision last Tuesday.  Alistair had suggested we do this and thanks to his initiative we were joined by members of the family of the cyclist who had died in the collision.  The widow of the cyclist said a few words, followed by Cynthia Barlow from Road Peace.  The family appeared pleased to be able to mark the event in this way, and were keen to support plans to make the junction safer.  ITV sent a reporter and put a 2 min piece on their local news (http://www.itv.com/news/london/update/2014-05-17/cyclist-widow-calls-elephant-and-castle-roundabout-deathtrap/).

From E+C we headed to Lambeth Bridge and Hyde Park.  Great turn out for the Big Ride.  At the finish on the Embankment many of the healthy riders opted to head off and make their own way back.  For those who stayed for the Rally, Werner, Andy and myself accompanied small numbers back.

Next ride, regular 4th Saturday 2 hour ride, 10am, Peckham Saure, May 24th
