Healthy Rides are back and we’ll be reviewing Southwark’s Streetspace measures so far at our general meeting on Wednesday 9 December. We also have news of three new low traffic neighbourhoods and other news, so read on.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity bringing us 3 new LTNs

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity is funding three low traffic neighbourhoods in Southwark. The schemes are in Brunswick Park, North East Peckham, and Walworth near Albany Road and Old Kent Road and are due to be implemented by the end of the year. They are centred around schools with the goal of enabling children to walk and cycle to improve health outcomes.

The schemes have already received positive press, including in the Guardian. We want to ensure there is positive support when these schemes are launched. If you live in any of these areas and would like to support the schemes do get in touch. You can also learn more about them and who to email in support on our blog.

We also saw filters go in on Bermondsey Street last month and the Great Suffolk Street LTN will be implemented any day now.

A new study on low traffic neighbourhoods

Rachel Aldred and Ersilia Verlinghieri have just published a study  comparing Streetspace LTNs across London. The study found that 90% of people live on minor roads and there is no difference in demographics between residents on main and minor roads. With the rise in traffic on minor roads in the last decade, this adds to the reasons why LTNs are so important as part of the changes required to get more people cycling.

Southwark Cyclists new committee officers

We held our Annual General Meeting last month and welcomed four new officers. Amy, Alex and James will be helping with Community Roadwatch, Better Streets for Southwark and Cycle Buddies respectively. Daniel will take on the role of our secretary. Everyone else was re-elected into their roles. We’re excited to have grown our core team as this will allow us to do even more to support cycling in Southwark.

Our next monthly meeting

Our next general meeting is Wednesday, 9 December from 6:30-7:30pm. We’ll be doing an infrastructure review and looking back at what Southwark Council has delivered this year. Come and share your views on schemes in your area and let us know what can be better and what you loved. If you’d like to join, email us at Southwark@lcc.org.uk (or reply) and we’ll send you the Zoom invitation.

Healthy Rides are back

Our Healthy Rides are back. These are easy paced rides that we lead every Saturday morning. If you’d like to join, check our Healthy Rides page for the next one. You must register on Eventbrite if you’d like to join, which you’ll find on the website.

Thanks for reading and happy holidays.
