On Dec 13th the Dept for Transport announced a trial of low level lights “to boost cyclists’ safety”. Two of the 11 trial sites are in Southark, on the west bypass (CS7) at the Elephant (see map). Both sites are at cycle only crossings. There has been no problems with the regular traffic lights – after all we do have necks! If this presaged lots more cycle crossings, then excellent. But the press release does not say this. Looks like yet another money-wasting piece of tokenism. Time the DfT actually started addressing the real issues – more road space for cyclists, more off-road routes and protection from left hooks for example.
Meanwhile SE1 have covered the detail here.
