Sunday 26th March was the date of this years Southwark Ride Leaders Course run under the auspices of our parent organisation, London Cycling Campaign. As last year our trainer was Diego Marando and we based the course at the Community Room at Dockhead Fire Station. 8 riders attended, 4 from Southwark and one each from Lewisham, Lambeth, Bexley and Hounslow. Highlight was to ride a short road course full of the sort of tricky junctions that would normally be avoided on rides. Road position and marshalling techniques were put into practice. The riding was made more realistic by Bruce puncturing thus giving a chance to discuss how such eventualities were dealt with on rides. Does the leader abandon the rider, or at least direct them to the nearest bike shop? Or is repair attempted with the attendant delay to the group? Never an easy dilemma to resolve.
We started in the wet but finished dry. Everyone was smiling as they received their certificates of attendance. Course organised by Bruce Lynn with assistance from Jamie Pedrick. Many thanks to Dockhad Fire Station for again hosting us.
