Peckham to the Quaggy River Healthy Ride
NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-from-peckham-to-lewisham-and-the-quaggy-river-tickets-1990140356379?aff=oddtdtcreator
Easy-paced 2.5 hour ride, mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks. Start/finish Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre, SE15 5RY).
The Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne close to Lewisham station where much new development has taken place. We now have a small “Confluence Park” to highlight this built-in water feature. The ride will follow the Quaggy, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert. At Manor Park the river emerges, but is still hidden away to start with, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel, behind railings. Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) whose “goal is to demonstrate that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty, educational facilities and wildlife into urban lives.”
Route is at https://goo.gl/svHy65. Outward leg will use the northern, less hilly route via Bridgehouse Meadows and Fordham Park to Brookmill Park where we see the River Ravensbourne and follow it to Lewisham. Return has a few short climbs that can be walked. Route goes up to Hilly Fields then past Brockley Station (possible coffee stop if time). Finally gentle climb to Nunhead and a long downhill back to Peckham. 16.5km, just over 10 miles. Leader Bruce.
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Remember things can, and do, happen on bike rides and we sometimes get delayed. It is therefore advised not to schedule anything to immediately follow the expected end time. This ride is part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.
