Record numbers on Cycleway 4

The nice weather and long days have resulted in record levels of cycling on my local Cycleway (Cycleway 4, counted on Jamaica Road at Dockhead). On Tuesday June 17th at 8.30am 347 cycles passed during a single 10 minute counting period. Over the peak hour (8:00 to 9:00) 163i cyclists passed heading into town. In comparison only 268 motor vehicles passed giving a ratio of 6 cycles to each motor and a mode share for cycling of 86%.

This is not just down to the good weather. It is part of a steady trend over 13 years of counting . During this period morning peak flows have increased from 781 to this week’s 1631, i.e. approximately doubled. The trend is for 1 additional cyclist per week. These numbers for C4 fit in with the wider data available for Inner London.

All good news, but we need to keep encouraging more cycling. There is still some distance to go to before London can be truly called a “cycling city”.
