Speedwatch is a joint enterprise between the community and the police, going equipped with a speedgun. The volunteer points the gun and calls out the mph and PCSO Kevin Phillips, representing the long arm of the law, writes down the car numbers. It can be a bit frustrating. Drivers stamp hard on the brakes when they spot the speedgun and the gun can’t give a reading until the speed stops dropping. Still, every little helps.

Pedestrians and cyclists are generally very supportive. Drivers, and particularly scaffolding lorry drivers, less so. The volunteer is an essential part of the process so if you can join in, please do so. You can email Kevin directly at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will try and arrange times, dates and locations to suit you. Highly recommended. Surprisingly good fun.
