Peckham to Kings Cross (Canopy Market). Report from Ride Leader Amanda
Weather was a perfect day for a cycle – Dry with sunny bits. 23 attended.
Start at Peckham Bobble (next to Peckham Library). Great bunch with a few new riders to SHR -made to feel welcome by all regular ones. We rode along the tarmacked canal path and made our way across the delightful Blackfriars Bridge. Straight up to Farringdon then a quiet route through Mount Pleasant to St Pancras. The briefed and planned ‘Keep together as a tight bunch’ did not work so well in practice along Pancras Road. Up the segregated cycle path that leads nicely over the bridge with cycle crossing into Granary Square. With all the new retail developments this was the busiest I have ever seen it, throughout the years of coming here. Our coffee stop was here – Canopy Market and new food and coffee pods in Coal Yard. Too much to see, eat and drink in a short ½ hour break. The tufted grass seating was newly laid this week.
Leaving the square, we did a circuit of the mirrored walled gasometer and admired the very pretty short stretch of the canal path – that was also so much busier than the last time we did this. We headed to Pentonville for our route home. Picking up a very short stretch the canal path at Angel, over to Shephedess Walk, crossing City Road (and passing The Eagle,) we passed Bunhill Cemetery, Barbican and the surviving section of the ancient London Wall. Passing the Guildhall, we turned to cross Southwark Bridge and went through the old Walworth Estate for our return to Peckham.
All back safe and sound, no incidents. Thank you to Jean and Alex for back-marking and Jamie for Marshalling.
