Ride 1 Cutty Sark to Hall Place

Report from Ride Leader Mike K. :”On Saturday 31st of May, 15 riders had set off from the Cutty Sark. We welcomed old friends and new friends alike, it was such a joy to see them again. Rode up Greenwich Park hill, continued through Blackheath and on to Eltham Park. Next through Danson Park then on to Hall Place, where the group stopped for coffee, while some admired the gardens. Then returned along the A2 cycle path back to the Cutty Sark. Thank you David for back marking the ride and all other riders for the help in making the ride enjoyable for everyone. “

Lots of photos and nice comments on WhatsApp. From Shelagh:”Thanks Mike – great route showing us Danson Park and The Red House [home of William Morris of Arts and Crafts fame] on way to Hall Place”

Ride 2. Four Cemeteries and a Museum

Great weather. Great group of 9 riders plus Bruce leading. Started from Peckham Rye Park (The Round Cafe) at 10am and took quiet streets the short distance to Nunhead Cemetery (opened 1840). Paths nice and dry as there has been so little rain in last month. Took the atmospheric path past the Scouts Memorial remembering the drowning of 9 boys from Walworth, mostly Sea Scouts, who died in a boating disaster off the Isle of Sheppey in 1912. From Nunhead up the hill and down to Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries, near Hilly Fields (which we decided not to climb). Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries were built next to each other in 1858 and joined up afterwards. They have the most confusing paths, plus plenty trees to block the view. Bruce, as usual, became lost. Never fear, Karen took over and with barely a glance at her phone she said go this way, than that and bingo we were back at the entrance. Caroline said she does this all the time!

From Brockley and Ladywell up the hill to Camberwell New Cemetery, opened in 1927. Much more modern than the other 3, no atmosphere but really smooth paths. We zipped through and along Brenchley Gardens to Camberwell Old Cemetery (1855). This is still very much in use and has been kept clear of the natural growth that gives the first 2 cemeteries their character. Next up the short, well named, Langton Rise (bit of walking here) and along to the Horniman Museum via the 400m of narrow track that follows a long defunct railway . Leisurely fefreshment break at the Horniman Cafe. No time for scaling Dawsons Heights so straight back to Peckham Rye Park via the direct route (busy Lordship Lane) finishing at 12.05.

Delightl;ful ride helped by the summery weather. Route, with oprions we missed, at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1kV2dhzOjJj13-Sburvu8lRMFDxae1CU&usp=sharing
