Ride 1. Partial Eclipse

10am and 7 riders at Peckham for a ride to Greenwich. Weather fine, sky clear, so optimistic of seeing the partial eclipse maxing at 11.03. Rode via Bridgehouse Meadows, up Morden Hill (as steep as ever) and across Blackeath. At the Royal Observatory just before 11. Surprisingly few people looking at the sky, mostly your average tourist. There was a mdest sized group inside the fends by the Planetarium with trpods and cemeras, You ghave to pay to get in there, and anyway dong there own think. No Observatory staff mingling outside the fence and helping people see the eclipse. ZSeened teh loss of a really good opportunity to advertise Royal grewich.

My dinhole imaging worked, ut the image very small and unimpressive. But, kindmess og strangers, one of the people inside the fence passed us a pair od special glasses. Dorectly observing the sun with a bit bite taken out of it was really magic. Adjourbed for coffee at the cafe doen the south end of the Oservatory comles. Porly signed so nt busy. Again some kind prople loaned us a pair of eclips glasses and we were able to follow the gradual dissappearance of the eclipse..

Back via Cycleway 4, then Cyleway 10 and finally the Cana;l path. Mission accomlished. The sun wsa there, then just 60^, then back tonormal. MAgic.

Ride 2. Not the Twickenham Ride!

Brief comment on WhatsApp from Ride Leader Jamie. “We were swamped in Putney by thusands of Fulham and Crystal Palace supporters today [FA Cup quarter final match] which caused difficulties but we eventually reached Richmond but aborted Twickenham. Beautiful weather and great turnout of 16 riders.” Comment from Jean. “Great ride Jamie – thank you. Such a lovely day to be by the river.”
