13 riders turned out for a ride on a new route (HH to Ravensbury Pk) with a new ride leader, Gloria. Below is a report on the ride including some noteworthy comments on aspects of ride design and management, Gloria’s report:
“It was a beautiful day weather wise, so made for a pleasant start to the ride. We had an earlier start than usual at 9am, from Herne Hill station, as we travelled towards Brixton Hill via Josephine Avenue, we had smooth sailing through the Clapham Park area. By the time we headed towards Dinsmore Road, small gaps started to appear. And while we were on A24 to Colliers Woods a few more gaps were evident, as there was plenty of road works and temporary traffic light signals/ These inevitably led to riders being further behind in the sequences of these lights and with the pace of the ride. Once we got to Ravensbury Park and navigated the actual entrance to the café, it was really quite a pleasant relaxed and a comfy environment to have our refreshments and snacks, because we could bring our bikes right through, knowing they were safe beside us. We took a few pictures afterwards by the duck pond and park signs.
We had some quieter routes on the way back and we also stopped for a photo op, at Wandsworth Prison, which seems to be a ‘keen fave’, for Bruce. We then came across Wandsworth Common and Clapham Common, through Narbonne Avenue and onto Clapham Park Road/Acre Lane/Coldharbour Lane into Rushcroft cutting round the back of the estate and into Railton Road before heading back to Herne Hill station.
In hindsight, a quieter outward route, would have been better to prevent the gaps, as well as taking the pace down given the roadworks on the main roads. Although we got back with about half an hour to spare from the estimated time, I could have included the Wandle trail, but my thinking was others had already incorporated this in previous rides, so I wanted to do something a little different. I see ending the ride through a park, where possible, or making use of more parks makes for a better experience.
Although I received good feedback from individuals for my first group ride with Southwark cyclists, I plan to work on my learning for future rides, by bringing people’s attention to busy sections and keeping the group closer – as things can change so quickly. Thanks Nigel B for being the back marker and taking some pics too. And to David W for snapping a few.”
Ride 2. Dulwich to Beckenham Place Park
