Burgess Park to Hyde Park

A very cold weather warning (yellow) was coming into force at noon. Temperature at 10am forecast as one degree with overnight frost – and this turned out to be about right. 13 of us gathered at Burgess Park Cafe for the 2 rides scheduled to start there. Bruce had already decided to abandon the Horniman Museum ride as it involved several steep downhills and might be icy due to the increased elevation. Only 2 riders turned up for this ride. They were offered a transfer to a shortened version of the other, Brompton, ride. One opted to just head home, the other joined the Brompton ride.
After discusson between the 2 leaders (Jane and Bruce) it was decided to start the 3.5 hour Brompton ride and review things at the Serpentine Cafe in Hyde Park. Had a good ride west to Vauxhall Bridge, then north via Regency St and Buckingham Gate to, as Jane put it “pop out by Buckmngham Palace”! Traffic light and the tourists waitng for the changing of the guard were less than usual. As planned stopped at the Serpentine Bar and Kitchen on Serpentine Rd. Most, but not all, headed inside to get warm. There was a consnesus that a shorter ride would be the way to go with the Brompton Cemetery to wait (again) for a better weather.
John S. led for a stretch, leaving Hyde Park by the Albert Gate and heading down through posh Belgravia and Pimlico (lowndes Squ, Eaton Squ, Ebury Bridge Rd) to Chelsea Bridge . Across the bridge we joined the planned return route and Jane took over again at the front. Last segment via Thessaly Rd cycle path, Larkhall Park and Eythorne Park. All back in Burgess Park at 12.20 and quite nicely warmed up. One of those days where cycling is easy enoiugh – dry, little wind – but it is cold on your face. Our first ride of 2025. Had to make a few adjustments as so very cold, but we are off cycling again and looking forward to lots of interesting trips in the rest of the year.
