Ride 2 Canada Water to Peckham Rye Park

Nine riders left Canada Water (Deal Porter Square) with Bruce leading on a circular route south to Peckham. Started west along the Thames stopping at the Supersewer site to see that half of it had disappeared. The new land created for the tunneling is being removed and there is now a large temporary lake. Unfortunately not visible as it was low tide – just a large empty space! The group was assured by Bruce that ir was easily seen at high tide. Headed towards Peckham via the Canal Path to reach our frequent startng location, Peckham Square. Next up Rye Lane to Peckham Rye Park, or technically Peckham Rye Common, across to the west side and up to the top of what is now Peckham Rye Park proper. Turned and descended stopping in the trees to view the small stream. This is the River Peck that gives Peckham its moniker. It flows for a bit further in the park then disappeas forever underground, eventually reachng the Thames at Deptford. Everyone was ready for a break at the Round Cafe with most of us sittng inside to warm up of what was a chilly day.

Return route was more easterly via the tiny Kirkwood Nature Reserve, Brimmington Park and Bridgehouse Meadows. The section from Queens Road Station will be part of a new Cycleway linking Surrey Quays and Pckham. TfL have stated that work has begun on a cycle crossing of the Old Kent Road to Ilderton Rd (much needed) but there was no sign of it. Slipped into Southwark Park and from there back to Deal Porter Square at 12.30. Route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1FoiQb1U7nseiioY4FlngVFfS6Ze7jF8&usp=sharing
