Ride 1. Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge via the Effra Valley

Ride 2. A Celebration of Elm Trees

Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge via the Effra Valley

Ten riders set off with Bruce leading from Dulwich on a grey, reasonably mild, morning. First stop Belair Park in Dulwich where the Effra is actually visible. One of London’s “lost” rivers, it spends the rest of its life underground. Quiet streets to Herne Hill then across Brockwell Park to Effra Road. This runs down to Brixton where we bypassed the main junction. Eventually joined Brixton Road and cruised down in light traffic to the Oval and on to Vauxhall Bridge. Decided we could see one of the points where the Effra enters the Thames despite the continued presence of the Supersewer works. Looks as though they are building a permanent artificial island by the old MI6 place. Coffee called so we took the Thames path upstream to the Black Cab Cafe in the Riverlight One block. This was not busy and it was warm enough for us to consume beverages outsde next to the Thames.

Homeward started past the American Embassy. Observed 2 swimmers in the Skypool (see photo) and continued past Nine Elms tube station on quiet streets across Stockwell, pausng briefly at the Tradescant Memorial. Route continued via Eythorne Park (with a smart avenue of cherries in full bloom), Elim Open Space and horrid Milkwood Rd (must use Shakespeare Rd next time) to Herne Hill again. Had made very good time so popped into the Velodrome where a smallish group were on the track and lots of children doing Bikability training in the central area.

Beck at Dulwich Park Cafe at 12,30 as planned after a very satisfactory ride. Route at http://tinyurl.com/y7ul6r9r

A Celebration of Elm Trees

Fourteen riders set off from Peckham Square with Simon S. leading. The aim: to visit as many elm trees as possible in a short ride. The elms should be in fruit, and very visible.

Comments from WhatsApp (The Vulnerables). From Jean,”Tnanks Simon for a really informative and interesting ride”. From Jamie, “Many thanks to Simon for such an excellent “Elm Tree” ride today. Great fun and now we know how to identify an Elm”. Map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1H749j8jFHeBD0qvndKLHns0PKMJTWfQ&usp=sharing
