Ride 1 Dulwich to Bishops Park
Report from Ride Leader John S.
An overcast morning in Dulwich Park as we gathered… 12 of us, all regulars, so we set off at a brisk pace which we maintained throughout. First to Brockwell Park, and then Clapham Common, where we proceeded up the cycle path to the north side, and then along the little trail to the end of the park. We then took a direct route to Wandsworth Bridge via Maysoule Road, and followed the Thames Path to Putney Bridge, crossing to Bishop’s Park. We took our time over a leisurely and convivial coffee break, as the day brightened, and then set off for New King’s road, from which we proceeded in an almost straight line up to Beaufort Street, where we cut down to the river, crossing Albert Bridge for Battersea Park. From there we followed a direct route back to Clapham Common, and so to Dulwich Park. Eva assured us that we had set a new record for arriving in good time (1.15 pm as against my over-cautious announced time of 2pm.) Thank you Michael, and Eva, for acting as outward and inward back markers!
Comments from WhatsApp. Frm Mike SW2: “Thanks John (and Mike & Eva at the back) for guiding us to Bishop’s Park and back through the less cycle-friendly streets of west London.”. From Eva: “John broke a record today – we completed the whole ride with a lovely long coffee stop and returned 45 minutes early!”
Ride 2 Peckham to Waterlink Way and Cutty Sark
Seven riders at Peckham Square for the start of this ride. Decent weather – sunny periods. Bruce led at usual easy pace up to Nunhead and down to he south end of Ladywell Fields where we joined National Route 21. At this point NR21 is the Waterlink Way. We followed this off-road route for over a mile to Southend Lane. Along this stretch were joined by the other Bruce so we were now 8. Cycled back to Ladywell Fields and continued over the spiral bridge to the norrth end of the Fields. Stopped there at the Good Hope Cafe for a break. Coffee consumed we continued along NR21 to Brookmill Park. Here a heron was observed by the River Ravensbourne and we cycled round the fountain. David assured us this was The Fountain of Youth. So we were hoping cycing round it might keep us , well, youthful. Continued along NR21, said hello to the Thames at Cutty Sark, then turned west along the Thames Path for a bit. Joined Cycleway 4 briefly before heading south to Folkestone Meadows. The crossing of Surrey Canal Road proved easier than usual as there are road works partially closing the road at the railway bridge. Final leg across Bridgehouse Meadows and Brimmington Park took us back to Peckham Square just after 12.30. Thanks to David S. and Bruce for back marking.
