Greenwich to Victoria Park
15 riders at Cutty Sark but tunnel lifts not working, so off with Amanda leading to Greenwich Staton and the DLR to Mudchute. Uneventful ride by Thames Path to Limehouse, then Regents Canal and Mile End Park to Victoria Park. Across to Olympic Park and a coffee break. Return route did not work out well. Down the River Lee path to Cody Dock which was a bit of a mess – much building going on. At the Emirates Airline queues were long so headed on to Woolwich where the ferry was not available and the south side lift was not working. To cap this a couple of bikes had chain problems. Finally made it back to Greenwich at 2.25!! If you read these reports you will see that mostly rides run like a Swiss Watch, but just occasionally…..
Magnificent Cemeteries and a Waterloo Church
Ride on a new 19km (12 mile) route devised by Ride Leader Simon S. This attracted just a small group of 5 riders and commenced on back streets to Warwick Gardens (www.insectinside.me). Ride continued via Camberwell Grove, off-road Greendale and Rosendale Road to West Norwood Cemetery. Looped round this is example of London’s magnficent Victorian cemeteries. Round the corner was St Luke’s Church, West Norwood, a fine example of the large “Waterloo” churches built in the years following the Napoleonic Wars. Return route took us to Dulwich Park where we had a short break for coffee at the location where we regularly start Healthy Rides. From Dulwich up to Nunhead and our second magnificent cemetery. Stopped at the Scouts Memorial and the ruined Anglican Chapel. From Nunhead nice downhilll run back to Peckham Square at 12.25, just a few minutes early. Proved an excellent route with only 2 significant uphills and total climbing 180m. Nearly always on quiet streets, some off-road path, and just a couple of busy crossings.
