London Rail Termini Healthy Ride

NOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-rail-termini-by-bike-tickets-1976397169136?aff=oddtdtcreator

There are 13 stations in central London where trains end their journeys. Most are household names Waterloo, Paddington, Victoria. Most came into use in just 30 years between 1836 and 1866. They form a ring round central London. The challenge: could a route be devised that visited them all on a Saturday morning ride. The answer is yes. The route chosen by ride leader Bruce is 28km, around 3½ hours at Healthy Rides speed, including a refreshment break.

Start 9.30 (note a bit earlier than usual) at London Bridge. Then an anticlockwise loop going first to Cannon St, then Fenchurch St followed by Liverpool St. Turn west waving n the direction of Moorgate (all underground) to Kings Cross, St Pamcras and Euston, all conveniently close together. Euston is a mess. We will have to walk a stretch through the station here then ride across to Paddington via Marylebone and Regents Park. From Paddington head south across Hyde Park to Victoria. Another fine mess. The combination of rail station, coach station and car oriented road layout has made Victoria very hard to get to on a bike. But it can be done. Continuing south across Lambeth Bridge get to Waterloo then Charing Cross and finally back to London Bridge at 1pm. There are some excellent bits of road, e.g. in the Royal Parks, and some easy quiet streets, but there are some segments on pretty well trafficked roads.  Not a ride for the complete beginner but an interesting outing for most.

Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

Note. Ride reports, often with photos and route maps, are posted to the Southwark Cyclists web site, Yearly index at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/
