A short and leisurely ten-mile loop starting at 10am from the Southwark Gateway Needle at London Bridge and getting back by 12 noon. We will ride from London Bridge to London Wall, and then, following a coffee break at Aldwych, to Victoria Embankment Gardens, before returning along the river to Blackfriars Bridge, and back to London Bridge. On the way we’ll cycle through several of the oldest and most interesting alleyways in the area, as well as some remarkable remnants of buildings long gone. Among the alleys we’ll explore are:
- French Ordinary Passage takes its name from a Huguenot eating place (‘ordinary’) on this site.
- Austin Friars Passage The Austin Friars’ monastery stood on this site from the 13th century until the dissolution of the monasteries, meeting its end in November 1538.
- Passing Alley, St John’s Path and St John’s Gate are all part of a site developed by the Knights of St John in the late medieval period.
… and many more… NB Lots of time for photo opportunities!
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.
