Tell Southwark Council: Make the Lower Road cycle scheme permanent

Southwark Council are consulting on Lower Road cycle tracks. The cycleway scheme provides a segregated cycleway along the A200 Lower Road from Rotherhithe roundabout to Evelyn St in Lewisham. It is the last part of cycleway 4 to be built, which provides a dedicated cycleway from London Bridge to Greenwich.

The scheme is incredibly successful at creating safe journeys for everyone to cycle and has led to a big growth in cycling through the area, increasing local footfall.

The existing infrastructure was made from temporary materials and certain locations aren’t quite as good as they could be. So, the Council is now proposing to:

  • Make the scheme permanent
  • Improve certain parts of the scheme, specifically the junctions at Culling Road, Neptune Street, Ann Moss Way and Chilton Grove.

Southwark Cyclists proposed response

  • If you are short on time, the only question that really matters is on the first page of the survey. It asks:
    • Do you agree with the overall proposal? We recommend answering “Strongly agree”
  • You are then asked if you want to answer questions on specific aspects of the scheme.
    • This is optional, but if you choose to do this, we recommend answering “strongly agree” to all the questions.

It’s really important that as many people as possible respond. First, because a lot of anti-active travel voices are likely to oppose it. Second, because the more positive noises the council hear, the more likely they will build more equally good cycle infrastructure in the borough.

So don’t delay, respond today! https://engage.southwark.gov.uk/en-GB/projects/lower-road-safety-improvements
