Join us for a celebratory ride at an easy-going, conversational pace on our ride to the unveiling of Portrait Bench at Greenland Dock.

Meet us under the grey/turquoise archway at the western entrance to Burgess Park (on Walworth Road, just by Albany Road). The ride is about four miles. Arrive from 9.15am for a 9.30 departure on 16th August 2013.

We’ll ride on quiet roads and some off-road cycle paths, following the route of the old Surrey Canal for a good part of the time, passing Burgess Park meadows and the Glengall Wharf growing project. Wildlife to be seen includes the Camberwell Beauty butterfly, a blue lion and a perching cormorant.

The route takes us past many places and projects that Barry was involved in – or simply delighted in showing to other people. We’ll take the tiniest of detours to look at the new Burgess Park BMX track and to ride over the Connect 2 Bridge at South Bermondsey.

The new portrait bench honouring Michael Caine, Phyllis Pearsall and much missed and loved Barry Mason is at Brunswick Quay, Greenland Dock SE16 7PT (just opposite the Moby Dick pub, and on the route of the beloved ‘Locks, Docks…’ afterworker). We’ll arrive there by 10.30am, in good time to welcome the ‘Pedal On UK’ riders who are visiting all the Sustrans Connect2 sites, and for the grand unveiling at 10.45.

Attractions at the Dock will include: Dr Bike free bike servicing, pedal powered smoothies, and cycling-related fun, advice and information. Plus a Michael Caine look-a-like competition! You can find out more information from Sustrans.

Depending on the wishes of the people who join the ride, we’ll either go on to Surrey Docks Farm and the Frizzante Cafe www.surreydocksfarm.org.uk or lead riders back to Burgess Park in time for the official opening of the BMX track at midday.
