As well as the main sewer along the Thames a second sewer was needed to carry overflow from the Deptford Storm Relief Sewer. A direct connection to Abbey Mills looks the obvious solution but the geology was unsuitable so instead a tunnel was bored all the way to Rotherhithe. This joined the main pipe at Chambers Wharf adjacent to Cherry Gardens. The ride will follow this project from the start in Greenwich to Chambers Wharf.
Meet 10am in Deal Porter Square (next to Canada Water Library, across the road from Canada Water station). Aim to be back there at 12.00 to 12.30 after a 9 mile ride. Will start by riding to The Halfpenny Bridge (Norman Rd) via Greenland Dock and the Deptford waterfront. Admire the Victorian Greenwich Pumping Statiion through the fence then ride back to Deptford Church St. This was where the tunnelling started and the area used has been made into a small park with some new art work, Next a long ride, mostly Cycleway 10 then Southwark Park, to the Thames at Cherry Gardens. During construction this was a key location where 3 tnnels joined. A large piece of new land was made stretching 50 metes or more out into the river. This has all gone now. Just one lonely barge left with some gear on it. If time we will continue to one more location involved in the Thames Pipeline project. This is the Shad Thames Pumping Station that was upgraded to eliminate outflows.
Easy-paced ride largely on off road paths or segregated cycle lanes. Bruce leading. Route nap https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=18m0cMYTpKuPVfILXIMbLqs-xtvX316A&usp=sharing
Riders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. These rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides organised by Southwark Cyclists, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.
