Peckham to Kings Cross
Report from Amanda who planned and led the ride.
Weather was perfect for a cycle in Autumn (dry no wind) for our start at Peckham Square. Great bunch with a few new riders to Healthy Rides – made to feel welcome by all regular ones. Set off along the old canal path, right turn into Glengall St, crossing the Old Kent Road to pick up Q1 to Blackfriars Road. Blackfriars road and bridge has a brilliant two way on one side cycle lane (Cycleway 6) which we made full use of as a large group. Lots of traffic lights up to Farrington along a cycle lane all the way. Turning left onto Saffron Hill continuing along C6 route, we had quiet streets to King Cross.
Busiest section was crossing in front of the beautiful St Pancras station and riding along side it with vehicles dropping of passengers. It did, though, really nicely lead us to straight up and over the bridge to Granary Square. Our coffee stop was here as Canopy Market was the objective for the ride. Took a generous ½ hour break so that all could browse the market, shops, food court etc.
Leaving the square we did a circuit of the mirrored wall of Gasometer Park and admired the gardens. Started the rerurn by heading west towards The Angel. At Tolpuddle St we bunched up at the traffic lights and rode as a tight group for the busy section near the Angel. Route was via Bromfield St, Upper St and Duncan St to reach the Regents Canal towpath at Colebrooke Row. A very short section of busy towpath led to Shephedess Walk. Turned south crossing City Road (and passing The Eagle, quick burst of Pop goes the weasel from Bruce) then headed for the Barbican alongside Bunhill Cemetery and further along, a surviving section of the ancient London Wall. Passing the Guildhall, we turned right to head over Southwark Bridge. Pecked up Trinity St./Falmouth Road, crossed New Kent Road, then through the Walworth Estates for a return to Peckham.
All back safe and sound, no incidents. Everyone said they enjoyed it. As usual I forgot to take photos.
