1. Canada Water to Blackheath Pre-marathon Ride.
Timed to have a look at the preparations for the London Marathon on the 3rd.
Post-ride remarks from Ride Leader Simon K.
“Even from the start rain wasn’t far away as ten of us set out from CW. Actually rode the ride backwards, going out through Folkestone Gardens, Deptford Park, and returning along the river. As you would expect a lot of preparations going on in Greenwich Park and on Blackheath. Nice to return to ‘normal’ after last year’s event round St James’s Park. Deciding that discretion was the better part of valour, got back about 20 mins early, by not adding on any loops. Despite the light rain, seven of us went off to The Bermondsey Blue for bike marking, Unfortunately David M came a cropper in Southwark Park. We got him back on his feet and Jamie stayed with him to CW station where he could get the Overground home.”
2. Dulwich, Crystal Palace, Ladywell Fields Loop
9 riders at start despite wet forecast. Headed off in only very light rain to College Road led by Jean and with John at the rear. Steady progress up to the Toll Booth, then a few walking the steep stretches up to Crystal Palace Parade. Entered the park at the top of Anerley Hill and descend a bit to the Terraces and on past the Bowl. Exited across Crystal Palace Park Rd and on to Sydenham and a busy Mayow Park. Back streets and a rather nice path (between Champion Rd and Bell Green) down to the crossings to Sainsbury’s and the Waterlink Way (NR21). Lovely ride north through Catford to Ladywell Fields where we had a coffee break at the Good Hope Café (interesting history, set up by family in memory of teenager murdered in 2008). Return route used LCN22 (Sevenoaks Rd, Brockley Way) to Peckham Rye Park, then LCN25 (Friern Rd, Eynella Rd) back to Dulwich Park. A typical Healthy Ride with quiet streets linking to parks and cycle path. The rain never came to much. Excellent.
Many thanks to Jean and John for working out the route and then safely guiding us round it.
