Ride 1. Oxleas Wood Loop from Greenwich
New route devised by Mike Kearns who led on the day. Loop from Cutty Sark via Eltham to Oxleas Wood Cafe, then past Severndroog Castle back to Greenwich. 12 riders.
Notes from Mike K. : Our latest 12-person group ride was an absolute success! We kicked things off with a fantastic coffee stop amidst the ancient canopy of Oxleas Woods. From there, we pedalled through the vibrant Rose Garden before circling the historic Severndroog Castle. Next, we cruised past the peaceful moated grounds of Well Hall Pleasure Gardens and wrapped up our scenic route at Greenwich Cemetery. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Massive thanks to Jamie for his excellent marshalling and to Nicolas for back-marking perfectly to keep our group safely together!
Ride 2. Finding the Mr Doodle Statues
Bruce spotted a report about some new, fun looking, statues positioned in the West End. They were the work of Mr Doodle, a serious (sort of) artist who wanted to publicise Art of London. This looked like a fun basis for a ride. 10 of us set off from London Bricge at 10am. Rode Embankment Cycleway then up to Ladwych. Hard now to remember how that used to be cloged up with busses and cars. The south part now pedestrianised and landscaped. therough to Covent Garde where we could still ride round to Hensietta – probably tourists still easting their buffet breafasts. Soon in Leicester Saure for the first 2 statues. Now getting busy so walked part of the way to Picadilly Circus where there were anpother 2 statues. More photos. Then short walk/cycle to St James Market tucked between busy Haymarket and Lower regents St. There we found the final statue plus a building partly covered in Mr Doodle signature blak and wehite dodles. Group photo infornt oh these doodles nd it was time for a break. someone suggested the Cafe at St James Picadilly. Turned out to an excellent selection. Cafe is on the west side of the church, not well signed so quiet. Lots of seating inside and out, plenty space for the bikes And a useful rear exit on to Jermyn St. Ride home was via the Wellington steps down to the Mall (bikes eithjer carried or bumped). Then over Westminster Bridge (very crowded), aling the thames path route to Park St, next to Borough Market. We thought Picadill and Westminster Bridge had been bust, but Borough Market around noon on a snny saturday, it was solid. So decidedd to end the ride there. Many thanks to Eva and Nigel for back marking.
