DESCRIPTION:Christopher Wren and Greenwich – Healthy Ride\nNB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/christopher-wren-and-greenwich-cycle-ride-tickets-743408574057 \nA nice easy ride to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the death of Christopher Wren and related architecture in Greenwich. It complements our earlier ride looking at Wren buildings in Central London. The ride is 10 miles most of which are getting us from Peckham to Greenwich and back using different routes. In the middle there is a short loop through Greenwich\, stopping at the General Wolff lookout in Greenwich Park\, then riding down to the Royal College. \nMeet Peckham Square (Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, Peckham Library) 10am. Finish back there approx. 12.30. Bruce Leading. Outward via canal path and Cycleway 10. Up the hill in Greenwich Park (walk if you need to). From the viewpoint you can see Wren’s Royal Observatory (built 1675-6) next to you. In front of you is a view of the Royal Naval College designed by Wren and built in 1696-1712.  Slightly nearer is the Queens House. This is an earlier building constructed 1616-1635 and designed by Inigo Jones. Interesting to compare this neo-classical building with Wren’s designs 80 years later. The site architect for the Royal College was Wren’s associate Nicholas Hawksmoor. He was 20 years younger than Wren and himself built several prominent buildings in Lonon. One can be seen from the viewpoint slightly to the left\, St Alphege’s Church\, built 1712-14. \nA nice balance of riding and culture. Simon S. leading. About 10 miles. Start 10am in Peckham Square\, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. Finish around 12.30.  Outward from Peckham Square via Nunhead Cemetery\, Peckham Rye Park and Camberwell Old Cemetery.  Back via Camberwell New Cemetery\, Brockley\, Ladywell Cemetery\, and Hilly Fields.  Easy-paced ride with a few ups and downs\, but nothing serious. DESCRIPTION:Lord Mayors Show – Healthy Ride\nNB Please register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/lord-mayors-show-cycle-ride-tickets-750929258627 \nSecond Saturday in November is date for the annual Lord Mayors Show\, a procession of bands\, floats and carriages around the streets of the City. The streets are cleared of traffic. There is a narrow window mid-morning when\, expertly led by Werner\, we have been able to enjoy these empty streets. And also sneak a view at some of the participants preparing for the parade which starts 11.03 (after the 2 minute silence for Remembrance) from Mansion House. \nStart 10am at London Bridge (south side next to the Needle). Cross London Bridge\, then negotiate with police and other security staff. Route clearly very uncertain. Start 9.30am at Southwark Needle (south end of London Bridge\, close to the station\, SE1 2PF) with Amanda leading for an estimated 3.5 hour ride. Outward route along south side to Westminster Bridge\, then Buckingham Palace\, Hyde Park\, Marble Arch\, Oxford St\, Baker St\, Regents Park Outer Circle\, Camden High St. Coffee stop. Return Canal Tow Path to Kings Cross Granary Square\, Cycleway 6 to Farringdon\, up Ludgate Hill and past St Pauls.  Down to Cycleway 3 and if time loop over Tower Bridge and Tooley St back to London Bridge. Some roads with lots of traffic. But pretty much non-stop sight-seeing and photo-ops! An easy-paced\, pretty flat ride taking in some iconic sights of SE London: the Cutty Sark\, the Thames Path\, Greenland Dock and Stave Hill – not to mention Millwall FC’s stadium (twice!). Stave Hill is a man-made small conical mound close to Russia Woodland in Rotherhithe. You walk up it to get the view – not a hill you cycle up. Nearly all this route is on quiet cycleways.
