South of the River in 1814
This short, leisurely ride follows those roads south of the river that date from the eve of Waterloo, as shown on William Darton’s Map of 1814 (‘The Stranger’s Guide to the Streets of London and Westminster’). We begin from Canada Water, going directly to Jamaica Road, and then following a loop across to Lambeth, with lots of zig-zags to take in roads of interest. Along the way we’ll visit Cherry Garden Street, where Jamaica House once stood (as Pepys tells us). The historical high point will be at the Obelisk, at the foot of Blackfriars Road, erected to commemorate the building of the third bridge across the Thames in 1771. Our coffee break will be just opposite the Old Vic, by Lower Marsh Market. 13 miles, finish back at Canada Water at 1pm. John S. leading.
