SUMMARY:Peckham to Shooters Hill - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/peckham-to-shooters-hill-cycle-ride-tickets-394693217037 \nTypical easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride.  Aim is to get to Severndroog Castle on top of Shooters Hill.  Start time 9.30 (note earlier than usual time). Start/finish Peckham Square (Peckham library\, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY). Duration 3.5 hours including refreshment break. Outward route uses bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge. Then off road and quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. Brief stop in Well Hall Pleasaunce to prepare for the summit ascent.  Make a short ride through the foothills to the southwest corner of Jack Wood\, then the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. Plenty of time to just walk up – really steep section only 300m long.  Fast return route using initially busy Shooters Hill Road\, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park.  Whiz down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Q1 to Surrey Canal Rd\, Bridgehouse Meadows and quiet streets back to Peckham Square.  Bruce leading\, route at https://bit.ly/2Fv5z5Z \nPreviously did this ride Jan 19th 2019 and Sept 11th 2021. SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to SITC (Sculpture in the City)
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-to-sitc-sculpture-in-the-city-tickets-394706777597 \nThis ride is an exploration of the outdoor art exhibition in the City of London – Sculpture in the City (https://www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk/)\, starting and finishing at Cutty Sark\, next to the Foot Tunnel. Start time 10am.  Will we like the sculptures or will we just shrug our shoulders? Art enthusiasts may want to download the free Bloomberg Connect guide to the SITC exhibits (https://www.bloombergconnects.org/features/). We can guess which sculpture merits the description “its horizontal configuration opposes veneration and pomposity through its prosaic absurdity”. There will be a competition to come up with your own description of one of the sculptures which sounds most as if it were part of the official guide – the winner will get a free COFFEE & CAKE! This ride will be lead by Eva\, and including a coffee break is likely to take ca 3 hours.

SUMMARY:Wandle Trail - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:   https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wandle-trail-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-401929019517 \nHere is a nice challenge: ride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from Southwark (Southwark Needle\, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven\, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. \nRoute outline. Start Southwark Gateway Needle\, SE side London Bridge\, 9am. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Pick up the Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill\, Morden Gardens\, White Bridges and Carshalton Ponds.  Useful guide: http://wandlevalleypark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Wandle-Trail-Map-Print.pdf \n

SUMMARY:Three Prisons and a Ferryman’s Seat - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/three-prisons-and-a-ferrymans-seat-cycle-ride-tickets-405955181877 \nSouthwark was famous for its prisons in the 18 and 19th centuries. Learn about them and some other local history on a great 2 hour\, 9.5 mile\, flat ride with Bruce leading. Start/finish in Peckham Square (Peckham Library\, Peckham Pulse\, SE15 5RY) \, 10am start\, 12 noon finish. Starts along Surrey Canal path to Burgess Park\, then via Bagshot St to the New Kent Rd. Stops at Newington Gardens (Location of Horsemonger Lane Goal)\, Angel Place (Location of Marshalsea Prison)\, Bear Gardens (Location of the Ferryman’s Seat) and Scovell Rd (Location of Kings Bench Prison). Return via Quietway 1 (Q1)\, Coopers Rd and the Canal Path again. As usual keeping to quiet roads\, almost entirely\, plus some nice path at the start/finish. Just a tiny bit of busier road. This excellent themed ride was first done in 2017 led by Harry Clark and most recently by Bruce in 2021 (see report). Harry wrote a quite detailed information sheet\, attached below. SUMMARY:Boat Race Course Ride
DESCRIPTION:NOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/boat-race-course-cycle-ride-tickets-405412077437 \nThis ride will be led by Jamie. As Jamie says: “We last did the Boat Race ride on 2nd April when it was unpleasantly cold with a bitter east wind in our faces. One hopes that late August will be more forgiving.” The long range forecast is much better\, 22 degrees\, sunny intervals\, gentle breeze. Here are the detailed instructions.  Note also that this ride does not involve any trains. These have proved very unreliable recently… \nMission To cycle the iconic 4.25 mile Boat Race route from Putney to Chiswick Bridge. \nRoute  Riders should note that this is predominantly a relaxed and social event that involves some enjoyable cycling in stages for about 22 miles in all. 80% of our route is on quieter roads and unsurfaced river paths. This circular route is predominantly flat and thus suitable for all types of bicycles and most rider abilities. There will be loo stops along the route.\nFrom Waterloo Station the ride will follow the river path west to reach the start at Putney embankment. From Putney we will stay on the south side of the river and head to Mortlake before crossing the river by the finish post at Chiswick Bridge. We will then follow the river back down the north river side passing Chiswick Eyot\, Hammersmith Bridge and the Fulham Palace on our return to Waterloo Station which should be approximately 4.30pm. \nCoordinating Instructions and Timings  Riders will meet at 10.00am on Saturday 2nd April at the bottom of the steps outside and under the Waterloo Station Victory Arch that is 50 yards up on the right from where York Road meets Mepham Street and Cab Road just before the road bridge. A Riders safety briefing will be given at 10.00am. \nRations and Water  Our first coffee stop will be at Putney embankment around 11.00 am where we will stop for about 30 minutes. We will stop for lunch around 12.30 at The Ship Inn at Chiswick Bridge south side overlooking the River. Riders are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch/snack should they wish.  Time permitting we will also stop at the stunning Fulham Palace for tea and cakes before returning to Waterloo. \nChecks and Equipment  Riders are urged to pre-check general ABC bike serviceability before the event. A = Air in tyres\,\nB = Brakes\, C= Chain & gears etc. \nCommunications  It is important that all Riders have Jamie Pedrick’s mobile phone number 07976 803741 in their phones in case of any issues on the day. Please feel free to contact me with any queries regarding this event by phone or email on jamie.pedrick@outlook.com
