SUMMARY:Free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:If it’s been a few weeks since you came\, you need to know that the venue has changed. All those who came to the last one already know. It’s now in the cheerful and friendly Camberwell Leisure Centre in wonderfully named Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. The photo makes it look a bit grim but it’s a delightful building with cafe\, good staff and\, now\, great bike fixing. \nStill free and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in (see the earlier remarks about not attending every week). What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. They fix your bike and at the same time show you what to do and how you might do it yourself. The whole shebang is free\, cheerful and open to anyone. No ID checks. You need to bring a bike to get full benefit but you are welcome to come without one and watch. \nFor more info about this and future events\, email southwark@lcc.org.uk though that can be slow\, keep an eye on @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207. We are a borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign https://lcc.org.uk and everything we do is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be at the junction of Half Moon Lane and Village Way with their speed guns. The speed limit is 20 and violators will receive fierce letters from the Met promising close attention to their number plate in case of further misdeeds. Worth a bit of effort I feel. To join in email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. To contact us email southwark@lcc.org.uk\, tweet @southwarkcycle or text me on 07842 640 207. I almost certainly won’t know but I may know a guy who will

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Our team will be at Herne Hill\, near the junction with Holmdene Avenue\, speed guns at the ready. Those caught in their sights get fierce letters with fierce threats of personal attention from the Met. The record for the most reckless driver of the year was briefly held by a motor bike caught pulling a wheelie uphill at 53mph while over taking a car in Dulwich Wood Park. It’s now been overtaken by a motorbike caught doing 73mph in Herne Hill going the wrong way around a bollard\, over-taking many vehicles and approaching a bend. \nTo join in email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk or email southwark@lcc.org.uk\, tweet @southwarkcycle or text me on 07842 640 207. SUMMARY:Dulwich Park to Ladywell Fields - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Start/finish at Dulwich Clock Cafe in Dulwich Park SE21 7BQ      Easy-paced ride through 4 cemeteries\, 2 parks and 2 “Fields”.  Bit of up and down\, but nothing heroic. Initially up to Peckham Rye Park\, then through Nunhead Cemetery.  Over the railway to Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery then up to the top of Hilly Fields and a chance to admire the view back to central London.  From Hilly Fields down to Ladywell Fields and along National Route 21 towards Catford. Bit before Catford Bridge Station head for home\, across the railway from Eddystone Road\, then through Camberwell New Cemetery and along Brenchley Gardens to Camberwell Old Cemetery. Finally Underhill Rd\, across Lordship Lane and through estate roads to Dulwich Park. Cemeteries make excellent cycle routes – nice paved paths and few pedestrians. Overall a lot of the ride is off road\, plenty quiet streets\, a few busy intersections. Route at http://tiny.cc/vgfpbz

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nA talented new member has located a pub so that is one problem out of the way. Stay after the meeting\, tell us what’s wrong with it (the meeting not the pub) and  what to do about it.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:September seems to be the time when cyclists thoughts turn to having their bikes serviced. Approach those mechanics with confidence. Let our guys give your bike the once over first. We will be under Peckham Arch tightening brakes\, indexing gears and giving wise advice (“clean that chain” “those tyres need air”). I particularly recommend the advice. After listening to it for about five years I have started following it myself. \nEverything we do is free and open to all. We are the Southwark branch of the London Cycling Campaign and most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Our mechanics like bike-related problems. Bring challenges and let them enjoy themselves

SUMMARY:Car-free day 2019
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists Car Free Day \nSouthwark Cyclists are planning to run rides and events as part of London Car Free Day\, starting at 11am.  The programme will include group rides around the car free area (including Tooley St\, Tower Bridge\, Fenchurch St\, Bank\, Bishopsgate\, London Bridge).  We will be organising some small competitions on Tooley St to test your cycling skills\, e.g. slow races\, track standing\, limbo.  Bring any equipment for street games\, e.g. tennis or badmnton rackets and shuttles/balls\, in case we get bored with cycling (unlikely\, but we might just fancy a quick game of something else). \nWe are asking you to sign up so we have an idea of numbers and can do some planning. If a lot of people are coming we will maintain a constant presence at the Needle.  If we are not there\, come and search for us. Look for a bike with an orange flag on a tall pole.  See you there! \nIt would be helpful to know rough numbers\, so if you are planning to come along there’s an (optional) Evenbrite form at:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/southwark-cyclists-car-free-day-tickets-72845110687   Do not worry if you have not done this – just turn up. We will be there. \nSeptember 22nd is London’s biggest car-free day so far\, closing 12.3 miles (20km) of roads in the centre of the city. Roads will be closed around London Bridge\, Tower Bridge and much of the City of London.  Boroughs across the city will also hold events promoting walking\, cycling and public transport\, as well as creating scores of “play streets”.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Cycleway 1
DESCRIPTION:Our mechanics and their weighty toolkits will be tightening brakes\, indexing gears and diagnosing that irritating squeak (“it’s the back wheel falling off”). They will be in their usual pitch at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road traffic lights near Cafe Crol (good coffee). Keeping them occupied is a full time job. Bring your problems — they particularly like tricky ones. It’s all free and open to all. \nThese sessions are run and funded by Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign and everything we do is free and open to everyone wherever you live. You can email us on southwark@lcc.org.uk\, tweet us on @southwarkcycle or text me on 07842 640 207. I probably won’t know the answer but I may be able to find out.

SUMMARY:Peckham to Blackheath Loop - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:New version of a route we have cycled several times (see report 27 Oct 2017\, http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-oct-dec-2017.html).  This time will include Telegraph Hill.  We have not been up there to admire the view for a while.  Outward route up to Telegraph Hill then down to Brookmill Park and a not too steep route up to Blackheath and Greenwich Park.  At Lewisham will make a small diversion to see how the new landscaping at the Ravensbourne/Quaggy confluence is coming along. Short stop at the entrance to Greenwich Park where there are loos. Return down through the park and along Quietway 1\, as you know a favourite route and by far the best Quietway so far. \n10.5 miles\, all quiet streets or paths.  Plenty of time for walking the short steep bits.  Route at https://goo.gl/itW2R4.  GPX file at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/autumn-winter-2019-20.html \n
