SUMMARY:Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride using a lot of quiet streets and paths as well as some busy roads on the outward leg. Ride created to demonstrate that it was possible to have a flat ride from Dulwich.  Trick is to follow the River Effra valley\, going via Brockwell Park and Brixton. Last did this ride Sept 1st 2018 (see report).  Will have a stop on Vauxhall Bridge to note where the  Effra was marked as flowing into the Thames next to MI6. Cannot do this any more as marked exit covered up due to Tideway Sewer works. Anyway\, this is not where the Effra mostly enters the Thames – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Note Effra was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s. Route at http://tinyurl.com/y7ul6r9r and GPX at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/spring-summer-2019.html

SUMMARY:Free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:Free and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in.. What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. These evening bike-fixing sessions are a joint venture between Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants & Residents Association and are held in the TRA hall. That’s not a super-easy thing to find so a useful picture of the hall is above. Vestry Road\, up the hill passed the shops and down an alley on your left is the best verbal description I’ve been given. See below for full address. The whole shebang is free\, cheerful and open to anyone. No ID checks. You need to bring a bike to get full benefit. For more info email southwark@lcc.org.uk though that can be slow\, keep an eye on @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost shout loudly and someone will walk out and wave their arms around.

SUMMARY:Climate Strike on a bike: demonstrate with us
DESCRIPTION:LCC is organising a family friendly ‘Climate Strike on a Bike’ with Parents for the Future. Ride with us through the streets of London in support of School Strikers\, on what’s anticipated to be London’s biggest school climate strike yet. \nWe are running a feeder ride to get you safely to the demo. The meet-up on the south side is at Waterloo. Our ride starts at the ice cream kiosk at South Norwood Lakes at 9.30am and picks up strength at Crystal Palace Overground station (9.40am)\, College Gate at Dulwich Park (opposite Dulwich Gallery) at 10am; Green Dale at 10.20 am and the Albany Road/Portland St junction in Burgess Park at 10.40. Then up Quietway 7 to the south side of Waterloo Bridge using Blackfriars Road and Upper Ground. ETA 11am. \nClimate change is the biggest threat facing humanity. SUMMARY:Peckham Healthy Ride - Quaggy River
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride\, this one mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks.  Some gentle hills\, nothing extreme. \nInspiration comes from the last Waterlink way ride that made me curious about another tributary of the Ravensbourne\, the one with the easy-to-remember-name\, the Quaggy River.  The Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne down by Lewisham station where all the new development is taking place.  Here we get a first view of Quaggy river where some quality landscaping (not yet finished) is going in at the confluence with the Ravensbourne. \nThe ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert.  At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then on to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings.  What a contrast to the Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park which we will have seen earlier in the ride.  Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) an active organization whose “goal is to demonstrate\, using the Quaggy\, that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife value into urban landscapes and urban lives.” \nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65 or download GPX file from Healthy Riders site.  Outward leg goes via Brookmill Park\, return leg goes past the Lewisham Leisure Centre\, Brockley Station and Nunhead.  16.5km\, just over 10 miles.

SUMMARY:Northern Heights. London Bridge to Alexandra Palace.
DESCRIPTION:Special 21 mile Bank Holiday ride to Alexandra Palace and back\, using a different route each way.  Begin northwards through the City and Islington. At Canonbury make the first of several contacts with the New River. Continue to Clissold Park (2nd New River sighting)\, then Woodberry Wetlands (New River 3) and Finsbury Park (New River 4).  Roughly following the New River has ensured a flat ride to this point.  But that changes as the route travels north.  From Finsbury Park pick up Quietway 10\, crossing the New River another 2 times. At Alexandra Palace Station\, leave Q10 and ascend to the Palace and collect the reward for climbing\, a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Café). \nReturn route runs a bit to the west of the outward route.  Initially along a short part of the Parkland Walk to Muswell Hill then round to Archway Rd close to Highgate Station in order to join the longer section of Parkland Walk\, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php).  Delightful\, nearly 2 miles of off-road path.  Through the SW corner of Finsbury Park then join Q10 going south past the Emirates Stadium\, through Barnsbury and Legal London to join the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue.  CS3 to Monument and across London Bridge to finish.  Hope to finish around 3pm as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at places of interest.  Everyone welcome on any type of bike. \nRoute worked out by Werner who will be leading.  Route track here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer Bob Eva and his personal protection officer from the Met will be at the  junction of Herne Hill and Holmdene Avenue from 6-8pm. They will be having a good time clocking speeding drivers so give them a wave as you go by\, even consider joining in. Learning to point a speedgun at a speeding driver can be fun and helps the Met understand that a) a lot of speeding goes on and b) lots of people don’t like it. Contact kevin.phillips@met.police.uk to join in
