SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:College ward Southwark councillor will be behind the speedgun near the junction of Dulwich Wood Park and Kingswood Road. The Speedwatchers had good hauls here pre-Christmas — let’s see if the thrill of speeding downhill continues to appeal in the dreary days of January. To join in mail kevin.j.phillips@met.pnn.police.uk (pictured above). Community volunteers get a say in which road the team choose. Pick your favourite racetrack and if you catch enough the police may join in.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:This activity is called Community Speedwatch in the rest of the country but Boris Johnson felt Community Roadwatch was less offensive to the motoring lobby. However we will call it by its proper name which is a good description of what it does — point a speed camera at drivers going too fast and then tick them off. Car-crushing would be nice but even finger-wagging is a start. \nThe police need civilian protection so the drivers don’t get too offensive. Bob Eva will be representing Southwark Cyclists and holding the gun on Sydenham Hill at the junction with Crescent Wood Road. PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic) will be writing the numbers down with added tellings-off for using a phone while driving\, going through no entry signs\, jumping red lights. I could go on.

SUMMARY:bike maintenance and tuition
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants & Residents Association (henceforth TRA) are holding free bike maintenance sessions with tuition and hands on assistance. You can bring your bike in for a free check-up; come and learn the basics of bike maintenance\, or just drop in for a chat about anything bike-related. \nThe whole operation is free — you don’t need to live on the Lettsom or even in Southwark. You will need a bike. The man in charge is Bruno whom many people will have met on our summer Dr Bikes. He gets bored in the winter. \nThe sessions will be a mix (depending on need) of teaching (this is how you change brakes) and hands-on assistance. They will be held in the Lettsom TRA hall. The official address is 114 Vestry Road SE5 8PQ. It’s just up the hill from the parade of shops\, and is accessed by a passage on the left of the shops. Picture to follow. All welcome. Free to all.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost shout loudly and someone will walk out and wave their arms around.

SUMMARY:Dulwich Air Quality and School Streets meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dulwich Society meeting to discuss “Getting Around Dulwich: towards a healthier\, safer and more active future”. Air pollution and car ownership are high in Dulwich and many elderly people feel very dependent on their cars. \nA parent\, Dr Henrietta Collier\, from Bessemer Grange primary school will tell them about the success of their street closure in keeping the school run at bay and encouraging more active travel. A complete closure is already in place around Bellenden School and school-run barriers are planned at Robert Browning JMI off the Walworth Road. \nDr Helen Wood\, an academic at Queen Mary’s researching “The health effects of traffic-related air pollution”\, MP Helen Hayes and Southwark Cabinet member with responsibility for Air Pollution reduction\, councillor Richard Livingstone\, will also speak. \nMore controversially the meeting will discuss Controlled Parking Zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:That’s the best speedwatch result in a 20mph zone so far. But others come close. Volunteer to hold the speedgun and see if you can better it. The community (represented by in this case by Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva) and the police (PCSO Kevin Phillips) catch drivers speeding and do something about it. They will be at or near the junction of Lordship Lane and Court Lane in SE22.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Leach of Southwark Living Streets and a 20s Plenty campaigner will be holding the speedgun at the junction of Southwark Bridge Road and Sawyer Street. The signs on the road say 20. They are big enough. Somehow drivers find them hard to see. You can join in. To become a Community Speedwatch Volunteer mail PCSO Kevin Phillips (pictured above) on kevin.j.phillips@met.pnn.police.uk. Volunteers get a say on which road is chosen. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:That’s 51mph in a 20mph zone. Top speed so far 66mph. Speeding drivers claim to be the best judge of their own speed and (anyway) if it mattered the police would do something about them. The police meanwhile warm and snug in their cars\, unaware that drivers are on their best behaviour all round them\, feel there isn’t much of a problem. \nCommunity Speedwatch — a co-operative effort between the police and the community — has shown how big a problem there is. Representing the community today near the junction of South Croxted Road and the south circular will be Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva with his comrade-in-arms PCSO Kevin Phillips.

SUMMARY:Peckham to Severndroog Castle - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:This ride starts at 9.30am from Peckham Square and turns at Severndroog Castle (see pic) on top of Shooters Hill. It ends back in Peckham at 1pm. That’s an earlier start and a later finish than usual and Severndroog Castle is 20m higher than the top of Sydenham Hill which was the previous summit. A new altitude record\, who could resist. \nPeckham Square is between Peckham Library\,and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre at the north end of Rye Lane (SE15 5JR). The outward route will use the bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge and then come off road and use quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. \nThere will be a coffee stop at Tudor Barn in Well Hall Pleasaunce [ www.tudorbarneltham.com ]. The website gives the impression it will be open but it looks a bit posh. \nNext comes a short ride to the southwest corner of Jack Wood and the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. There will be plenty of time to just walk up – the really steep section is only 300m long. \nAfter all that up there will be a fast return route all downhill\, initially using Shooters Hill Road\, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park. More whizzing down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Quietway 1 to Surrey Canal Rd\, Bridgehouse Meadows and back streets to Peckham Square. \nThere will be several short stops at places of interest plus the one longer coffee stop. First-timers and old hands welcome! Be sure to wrap up warm\, the forecast for Saturday is a high of 5 degrees and a low of nought. The route is here [ www.google.com ]. It’s 16 miles at an easy pace. All welcome. Free and open to all. \n

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Show the Met the community cares about speeding. I’m sure we all do. Community Speedwatch is a collaboration between the community (us) and the police (PCSO Kevin Phillips and friends). The community volunteer — in this case Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva — holds the speed gun and the Met writes down the numbers and sends them off to TfL who writes nasty letters to the drivers. \nIf you get caught three times you have to take an IQ test (no that’s a joke) you get a police fine. So the punishments on offer are not great but it seems to terrify drivers\, reduces their sense of impunity and provides evidence of widespread speeding which it’s useful for the police to see. They will be at the junction of Harper Road and Brockham St.  To volunteer contact kevin.j.phillips@met.pnn.police.uk. He’s very nice (see pic above).
