SUMMARY:Hills of Lewisham Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Hills of Lewisham \nIMPORTANT. You must register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hills-of-lewisham-cycle-ride-tickets-2003451691942?aff=oddtdtcreator \nMeet 9.30am at Peckham Square (Peckham Library\, Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre). 15 mile route with Dave P leading. Back around 1.30pm.  Ride to Cutty Sark via mostly Cycleway 10. It will be possible to join the ride at Cutty Sark. Be next to the Foot Tunnel at 10.10. Please indicate when registering if you are planning to join there. Next up the hill in Greenwich Park and a stop at the General Wolfe viewpoint. Over the Heath and then past Blackheath Station\, ride down the hill\, cross A20 and take a break at Manor House Gardens café where we can view the 250 year old ‘ice house’ close by. Continue past Hither Green Station then on to Ladywell for hill #2\, Hilly Fields. From Hilly Fields we go on to Brockley Cross and ascend hill #3\, Telegraph Hill. From there through to Nunhead and lovely downhill return to Peckham Square. Overall some hills to get you warm but also great views and some excellent off-road segments \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cunning-cover-ups-londons-hidden-ventilation-shafts-tickets-2003634123600?aff=oddtdtcreator \nLondon’s network of tunnels (for tubes\, trains and sewerage) needs a huge number of ventilation shafts\, but these are often considered to be a blot on the landscape. Over the years\, an astonishing range of cover-ups have been attempted\, and on this fun ride we’ll see some of the finest examples. We start from London Bridge (the Needle) at 10am\, returning by 1pm. Our wandering route takes us in a leisurely loop as far as Hyde Park. Among the highlights: \n… When the Metropolitan Railway\, the world’s first underground\, opened in 1863\, its cut-and-cover tunnels had periodic gaps to provide ventilation. One such gap lies behind numbers 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens\, necessitating the demolition of these two houses in the middle of a fashionable terrace. To avoid an unsightly gap\, the front wall of both houses was preserved\, leaving an empty void behind…which you can view by going round the back into Porchester Gardens. \n… The most surprising of all hidden ventilation shafts is\, perhaps\, the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner. Its Northern pier once housed a police station\, and its Southern pier a park-keeper’s residence\, but with the building of the present Hyde Park Corner roundabout in 1960-62\, both sides were gutted and one side became a giant ventilation shaft for the underpass below. \n… and you are promised many more cunning cover-ups. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Circular route going first to Beckenham then across to Crystal Palace Park\, up through the Park and down to Peckham via Dulwich. Jamie leading. Flat 8 mile route taking in Geraldine Mary Handsworth Park (Imperial War Museum)\, Archbishops Park\, Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens\, Vauxhall Park\, Kennington Park\, the new Eythorne Park and old friend Myatt’s Fields. Kick off 10am at the Stomping Grounds Café in Burgess Park. Cycleway towards the Elephant\, then southwestern bypass to GMH Park and a look at the BIG guns at the Imperial War Museum. On to Archbishops Park next to Lambeth Palace followed by Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Opportunity here for a small diversion to look at the new Isle of  Effra. Then to Vauxhall Park with its miniature houses and lavender. From there round the Oval to Kennington Park (WW II memorial\, BeesUrban). Second possible detour to the home of Beefeater Gin. Final leg across to Eythorne Park still looking very new and finally Myatts Fields. Coffee stop somewhere. Pretty much all quiet streets or path.
