SUMMARY:Dr Bike again
DESCRIPTION:Only two more Dr Bikes under the Arch before the winter. This unrepeatable offer must stop at the end of October. Last one October 27th. After that it’s too cold for the mechanics hands and also too dark for them to see what they are doing. \nLet the Doctor have a look at your bike before the winter sets in. The Doctor will be there indexing gears\, sorting out brakes and dispensing wise advice. And with him will be his able assistants also working away on bikes with various side-kicks dispensing maps\, gossip and goodwill. \nFind them under Peckham Arch (at the south end of Surrey Canal Path) from 5.30-7.30pm. Free\, everyone welcome. \nThis service must stop at the end of October. Last one: October 27th\, after that it’s too cold for the mechanics’ hands and also too dark to see what they are doing.

SUMMARY:AGM & Monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our AGM and monthly meeting are at the new Nunhead Green Community Centre at the usual time — upstairs in Holly. There’s a lift for those who can’t manage stairs. \nThere’s parking for 6 bikes outside the centre and more parking around the Green. The approach from Nunhead Lane involves a not very nice\, not very wide blind bend which the traffic takes too fast\, so the advised approach is via Scylla Road. \nFormal business should not take long. There will be an opportunity to discuss progress during 2015-16 and plans for 2016-2017. Come along and find out what we are doing and how you might be able to help. There will be free wine and pizza after and this is when the best discussions take place!

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London
DESCRIPTION:Final Opportunity to experience this “brilliant service” before we go monthly for the winter.\n Next one after today will be November 16th. \nHowever\, that’s then and this is now. As always\, we will be taking people who want to enjoy their commute to work up the Bike Train route to work — 50% parks\, 40% segregated cycle lanes and 10% traffic-calmed backstreet. We never share the road with a bus or an HGV. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 8am\, Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations at 8.10am. At Denmark Hill we leave from the cafe in Windsor Walk led by Liz Eden (07814 515 715). The two rides meet in Burgess Park and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.45am. The starting point at Peckham Rye is the bike stands behind McDonalds. From Blackfriars riders are taken on individually (if they want) and destinations so far include Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster\, Mayfair and Tower Hill. \nOur route takes in two parks\, a traffic-calmed backstreet\, the cycling-on-the-pavement lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and then the new TfL segregation. It’s very quiet and enjoyable\, mostly off-road (through parks) and then a backstreet. After that we are on segregation which is where there is a part of the road for bikes only\, protected by about 2m of pavement. \nThe map is here: [www.google.com] \nEntirely free and all welcome. To join in Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715 or for Nunhead and Peckham text me on 07842 640 207 or don’t do any of that and just turn up. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike for Students (and everyone else)
DESCRIPTION:You don’t need to be a student to bring your bike to this Dr Bike but it’s timed to be useful for those who get creative\, learn or otherwise feed their minds during the day. Dr Bike is free bike maintenance event. The good doctor will sort out brakes\, untangle weird gears\, pump up your tyres and give your bike the sort of TLC which will transform your sprinting. \nHis able assistants assist him\, as you might expect\, and also offer wisdom and wise advice on local cycle routes along with maps\, gossip and goodwill. \nNote the new venue: outside the Peckham Pelican (or inside if it’s raining) which is at 92 Peckham Road SE15 5PY. \nTheir website is here:  http://www.thepeckhampelican.co.uk/post/68266641976/the-peckham-pelican-brews-food \nAnd their Trip Advisor write-ups are here: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g186338-d5430321-r419677962-The_Peckham_Pelican-London_England.html \n

SUMMARY:Greenwich and back - Rotherhithe Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride on mostly quiet roads and paths.  David cannot lead his customary Thames loop due to the closure of Tower Bridge.  Instead will go east to Greenwich\, then back using mostly Quietway 1. Will give people a chance to judge the Lewisham and Greenwich stretches of the Quietway.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:This is a picture of the segregated cycle lanes on Blackfriars Road as they looked on the plans. They don’t look like this now. They are full of cyclists. Safe\, wide\, protected cycle lanes like this one make up about 40% of the Bike Train route. About half of it is through parks. \nA Bike Train is a led-ride and this one is a led-ride to work for those fed up with being at the mercy of the train operators\, who want to take their commute into their own hands (or feet) (or something). Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you healthy and costs nothing. A good deal. SUMMARY:Dulwich Park to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:The challenge was to design a non-hilly ride starting from Dulwich.  Ended up following the “lost” river Effra to the Thames.  Starting at 131ft and ending at 16 ft.  With all the small bumps there is a total of 245ft of ascent\, mostly on the return leg\, of course.  But it is pretty low slope stuff.  Also had not realized you could do a Dulwich to the Thames ride within our 2 hour envelope.  But a total of 11 miles should be just do-able. \nOutward route is going to be quick.  Unusually we will use several main roads\, notably a long run down Brixton Road.  This is not bad as there is plenty Bus Lane.  Return route\, when we will be going slower\, is a more typical “Healthy Ride” back street and parks route.  Route at https://goo.gl/p7bpWJ

SUMMARY:Bike Market -- sell your bike or buy another and have two
DESCRIPTION:Peddlemywheels are bringing their bike market to the Lambeth Car Free Day in Cornwall Road \nhttp://www.peddlemywheels.com/home \n\n\n\nLambeth Car Free Day\, SE1 \nCelebrating the better use of public space than merely for cars\, the council will be filling Cornwall Road with “fun and music”. \nCornwall Road will be closed to cars for the day on Saturday 24 September and returned it to the people. The council said “Encouraging cycling and walking over sedentary travel is particularly important at the moment with startling number of obese children and the shocking levels of air pollution. Adding a bit of active travel into your day will improve health\, decrease carbon emissions and in many cases save time and money.” \nLambeth Sustainable Travel stall will be there with staff to discuss schemes such as ‘try before you bike’ and cycle training. If you have a bike to sell you can bring it on the day and also buy a quality second hand one for you or your child at the fabulous Lambeth Bike Market which tours schools and is being showcased this year at Car Free Day. \nCornwall Road runs between Upper Ground and The Cut. Take no notice of the Google Map. it’s wrong. \n

SUMMARY:Cycle to Work Special from Crystal Palace
DESCRIPTION:Starts from the Cafe St Germain\, here shown looking very summery and complete with bike. Leader will be Angus Hewlett. He sets off before the central Southwark Bike Train to get though Dulwich before the school run. \nUp Greendale (a hill but green) and down through Camberwell\, Burgess Park\, up Portland Street and around the Elephant and Castle on the bypass. Then he’s offering a choice between CSH7 over Southwark Bridge or CSH6 (aka the North/South Cycle Superhighway) up Blackfriars Road and over that Bridge. There’s only one Angus so how he’s going to manage the split is not clear. \nTo let him know you are coming you can text me on 07842 640 207 or you can just turn up. Angus is cool with either. It’s normal to be late but don’t be. Just in time is OK.

SUMMARY:Fire of London Anniversary Ride – Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Fire of London Anniversary Ride – Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride. \nStart/finish Canada Water Library\, SE16 7AR (opposite Canada Water Station) \nEasy-paced ride using as far as possible quiet streets or paths.  Route will ride round the perimeter of the great fire that occurred 350 years ago\, on Sept 2nd 1666.  From Canada Water along the south of the river route (Nat Route 4) to Southwark Bridge. Then along EW superhighway to the Monument where we will of course have a short stop.  Then on to Tower Hill and round the north edge of the fire\, stopping at St Helens\, Bishopsgate to view the plaque (this church and surrounding wooden buildings amazingly survived the fire).  Some detours probable to sites associated with Robert Hooke\, who as well as being an eminent scientist was also City Surveyor and responsible for planning the rebuilding of London after the fire.  Return via Middle Temple and Blackfriars Bridge.  Then home along the south bank route with a short stop at Bear Gardens\, the site a small fire started by sparks blown across the river.  More history at http://thames.me.uk/s00049b.htm. They want people to use the cycle path which goes round the edge instead of going straight on. Always worth keeping an eye open for
