SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning Southwark Cyclists Bike Train runs again today. This (free!) service will run once a month till Spring. The arrival of Spring will be determined empirically. We will conduct a careful and thorough examination of the weather. Some arrangements have changed as a result of the Bike Train Survey which showed demand for an earlier start.. \n\n\nAn earlier start there therefore is. Fifteen minutes earlier. We start at 7.45 am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 7.55am. We are joined by riders from Denmark Hill who leave that station at 7.55am (from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk) and join the train in Burgess Park. \nWe cycle through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.30am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nTo book your seat at Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715. Don’t turn up without warning at Denmark Hill because this branch line will be demand-led (management speak for “may not run if there are no passengers”). For Peckham or Nunhead contact me on 07842 640 207 — or don’t book anything at all and just turn up. All welcome. Free. \nThe route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49922566210585%2C-0.0963249999999789&z=13 \nUpdate: Practice the route on a day out – with our guide to the history of the area! Download the Discover the history of Southwark by Bike Train guide.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting -- NEW VENUE
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker will be Ulrike Steven of What-if. Ulrike worked on Waltham Forest Mini-Holland. She will tell us about that and also about her current work on the Livesey Exchange bike hub (see picture). Ulrike is also keen to work on segregating the Old Kent Road. \nOur new venue will be at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and then right. I thought it was a one-way street but the google map shows cars parked all ways so presumably not. \nNo pubs for miles — this is a respectable area — but we can make tea and coffee. Free beverages for those arriving early. Those arriving late do the washing up. \n

SUMMARY:Peckham Healthy Ride to Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:First ride of 2017. Peckham Square 10am – 12 noon. Usual easy-paced ride on (mostly) quiet roads and paths. Peckham to Greenwich via Telegraph Hill.  Come and burn off some of those excess calories from the seasonal festivities.  A route we have done several times\, but not recently. Uphill start to Telegraph Hill \, then down to the Waterlink Way at Brookmill Park\, along National Route 21\, over Halfpenny Bridge (LCN 2) and on to the Cutty Sark.  Brief break there. Back over new swing bridge\, then Quietway 1 to Surrey Canal Rd.  Next the lovely path across Bridgehouse Meadows followed by the dreadful non-crossing of Old Kent Rd to Brimmington Park and quietish roads and path to Peckham Square.  For route see http://goo.gl/maps/GkEuB.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London NB new times
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train is now operating its winter timetable. Following the example of Southern Trains we have axed three quarters of our services but the charges remain the same. (It’s free). \nA Bike Train is a led-ride and this one is a led-ride to work for those fed up with being at the mercy of the train operators\, who want to take their commute into their own hands (or feet) (or something). Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you healthy and costs nothing. The ride is free. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 7.45am\, Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations at 7.55am. At Denmark Hill we leave from the cafe in Windsor Walk led by Liz Eden (07814 515 715). The two rides meet in Burgess Park and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.30am. The starting point at Peckham Rye is the bike stands behind McDonalds. \nFrom Blackfriars riders are taken on individually (if they want) and destinations so far include Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster\, Mayfair and Tower Hill. Return rides arranged on request. \nOur route takes in two parks\, a traffic-calmed backstreet\, the cycling-on-the-pavement lanes on the New Kent Road\, the Elephant and Castle by-pass and then the new TfL segregation. It’s very quiet and enjoyable\, mostly off-road (through parks) and then a backstreet. After that we are on segregation which is where there is a part of the road for bikes only\, protected by about 2m of pavement. We never share the road with a bus or an HGV. \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM \nEntirely free and all welcome. To join in Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715 or for Nunhead and Peckham text me on 07842 640 207 or don’t do any of that and just turn up.

You can get your bike safety marked and registered at the same time which could save your bike. \nMace construction project\, Highpoint\, will be partnering Met Police and Balfe’s Bikes to provide a cycle safety event for local cyclists. Balfe’s will give your bike a mini-MOT and the Met will security mark it. The Met will also give you safety information which is always useful and plop you in the cab of a lorry so that see how little the driver sees. \nAfter that you may like to join the LCC campaign for all lorries to have low level cabs like this one: \nmore info here: http://lcc.org.uk/pages/direct-vision-lorries \nThe whole thing should take about 15 minutes and there will be free tea and coffee while you wait. You can’t book just build waiting time into your journey. For further info contact: Laura Hampson\nCommunity Engagement Manager at Mace\, 078 8137 7792

SUMMARY:Final Dr Bike till Spring
DESCRIPTION:At the end of October Dr Bike returns to hibernation till Spring\, disappearing when the clocks go back and re-appearing when they go forward. The dark he can bear — it’s the cold and wet his hard-working hands don’t like. \nSo this is your last chance for a while to have the good doctor check your gears\, tighten your brakes\, raise your saddle and re-shape your bike to fit you. \nHe will be under Peckham Arch at the south end of Surrey Canal Path (just before the toucan crossing of Peckham High Street) with his trusty band of aiders and abettors. Not so many maps because TfL has taken them off the market to update them but lots of cheerfulness. \nAll free\, all welcome

SUMMARY:Dr Bike again
DESCRIPTION:Only two more Dr Bikes under the Arch before the winter. This unrepeatable offer must stop at the end of October. Last one October 27th. Free\, everyone welcome. \nThis service must stop at the end of October. Last one: October 27th\, after that it’s too cold for the mechanics’ hands and also too dark to see what they are doing.

SUMMARY:AGM & Monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our AGM and monthly meeting are at the new Nunhead Green Community Centre at the usual time — upstairs in Holly. There’s a lift for those who can’t manage stairs. \nThere’s parking for 6 bikes outside the centre and more parking around the Green. The approach from Nunhead Lane involves a not very nice\, not very wide blind bend which the traffic takes too fast\, so the advised approach is via Scylla Road. \nFormal business should not take long. There will be an opportunity to discuss progress during 2015-16 and plans for 2016-2017. Come along and find out what we are doing and how you might be able to help. There will be free wine and pizza after and this is when the best discussions take place!

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London
DESCRIPTION:Final Opportunity to experience this “brilliant service” before we go monthly for the winter.\n Next one after today will be November 16th. \nHowever\, that’s then and this is now. As always\, we will be taking people who want to enjoy their commute to work up the Bike Train route to work — 50% parks\, 40% segregated cycle lanes and 10% traffic-calmed backstreet. We never share the road with a bus or an HGV. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 8am\, Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations at 8.10am. At Denmark Hill we leave from the cafe in Windsor Walk led by Liz Eden (07814 515 715). The two rides meet in Burgess Park and arrive at Blackfriars at 8.45am. The starting point at Peckham Rye is the bike stands behind McDonalds. From Blackfriars riders are taken on individually (if they want) and destinations so far include Faringdon\, Kings Cross\, Westminster\, Mayfair and Tower Hill. \nThe map is here: [www.google.com] \nEntirely free and all welcome. To join in Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715 or for Nunhead and Peckham text me on 07842 640 207 or don’t do any of that and just turn up. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike for Students (and everyone else)
DESCRIPTION:You don’t need to be a student to bring your bike to this Dr Bike but it’s timed to be useful for those who get creative\, learn or otherwise feed their minds during the day. Dr Bike is free bike maintenance event. DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride on mostly quiet roads and paths.  David cannot lead his customary Thames loop due to the closure of Tower Bridge.  Instead will go east to Greenwich\, then back using mostly Quietway 1. SUMMARY:Bike Train to Central London
DESCRIPTION:This is a picture of the segregated cycle lanes on Blackfriars Road as they looked on the plans. They don’t look like this now. They are full of cyclists. Safe\, wide\, protected cycle lanes like this one make up about 40% of the Bike Train route. About half of it is through parks. \nA Bike Train is a led-ride and this one is a led-ride to work for those fed up with being at the mercy of the train operators\, who want to take their commute into their own hands (or feet) (or something). Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you healthy and costs nothing. A good deal. SUMMARY:Dulwich Park to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:The challenge was to design a non-hilly ride starting from Dulwich.  Ended up following the “lost” river Effra to the Thames.  Starting at 131ft and ending at 16 ft.  With all the small bumps there is a total of 245ft of ascent\, mostly on the return leg\, of course.  But it is pretty low slope stuff.  Also had not realized you could do a Dulwich to the Thames ride within our 2 hour envelope.  But a total of 11 miles should be just do-able. \nOutward route is going to be quick.  Unusually we will use several main roads\, notably a long run down Brixton Road.  This is not bad as there is plenty Bus Lane.  Return route\, when we will be going slower\, is a more typical “Healthy Ride” back street and parks route.  Route at https://goo.gl/p7bpWJ
