SUMMARY:The Full Wandle Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Full Wandle  \nNOTE. Rride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from London Bridge (Southwark Needle\, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven\, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. \nRoute outline. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill\, Morden Hall Park\, Carshalton Ponds and Beddington Park. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place. Around 300 human-powered craft take part in this race every year\, craft of all shapes and sizes heading up with the tide from Millwall Slip to Ham\, a bit from Richmond. We will start from Canada Water (next to Canada Water Library\, opposite Canada Water Station) at 10am with Cap’n Jamie in charge. Ride first to a good point near South Dock to watch the first boats start. Then ride upstream stopping at several points. We hope to reach Richmond\, near the finish\, by 2pm. Please note this is a very approximate finish time. Do not come on this ride if you need to be finished promptly. We will guide riders to Richmond Station to get transport back.\nIt may well be a bit chaotic but will be fun. Route is 21 miles\, so be prepared. Check and lube your bike\, bring water\, snacks\, suitable clothing\, spare inner tube etc. At present the forecast is dry. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bermondsey-tour-by-bike-tickets-1860285537119?aff=oddtdtcreator \nBermondsey\, the area along the Thames between Rotherhithe and Tower Bridge has been in the news recently. This year’s Stirling Prize has gone to a Bermondsey development. We will pass this on our route. Bermondsey has a long history. The wharves along the Thames were used to import food which in turn spawned food processing factories inland. The social history was interesting. Dickens describes Bermondsey as having the worst slums in London but in the early 20th century this area was a pioneer in slum clearance and social housing. On this easy ride we will pass the site of a medieval abbey\, signs of tannin\, a biscuit factory being repurposed and more. Start 10am in Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station\, finish there 12 noon. 9 miles of cycling\, frequent short stops\, maybe even time for a coffee at the finish. Bruce leading. Starting at Burgess Park (Stomping Grounds Café\, Chumleigh Gardens\, SE5 0RJ) at 10am and finishing at the Southwark Needle (Southwark Bridge) around 12 noon. A led ride will be available for anyone needing to return to Burgess Park. We’ll go via  C10 and cross the river at Blackfriars Bridge. There we can pick up the Snoopy in the City Sculpture Trail. The trail is designed for walking so it’s very much a stop-dismount-start ride as we approach each installation. Plenty time for photos. The Traill ends near St Paul’s Cathedral. From there we’ll stop at the reflective pool at 25 Cannon Street and take a look at Finsbury Circus before finishing the ride at London Bridge. SUMMARY:London Rail Termini Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:London Rail Termini Healthy Ride\nNOTE. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/london-rail-termini-by-bike-tickets-1976397169136?aff=oddtdtcreator \nThere are 13 stations in central London where trains end their journeys. Most are household names Waterloo\, Paddington\, Victoria. Most came into use in just 30 years between 1836 and 1866. They form a ring round central London. The challenge: could a route be devised that visited them all on a Saturday morning ride. The answer is yes. The route chosen by ride leader Bruce is 28km\, around 3½ hours at Healthy Rides speed\, including a refreshment break. \nStart 9.30 (note a bit earlier than usual) at London Bridge. Then an anticlockwise loop going first to Cannon St\, then Fenchurch St followed by Liverpool St. Turn west waving n the direction of Moorgate (all underground) to Kings Cross\, St Pamcras and Euston\, all conveniently close together. Euston is a mess. We will have to walk a stretch through the station here then ride across to Paddington via Marylebone and Regents Park. From Paddington head south across Hyde Park to Victoria. Another fine mess. The combination of rail station\, coach station and car oriented road layout has made Victoria very hard to get to on a bike. But it can be done. Continuing south across Lambeth Bridge get to Waterloo then Charing Cross and finally back to London Bridge at 1pm. There are some excellent bits of road\, e.g. in the Royal Parks\, and some easy quiet streets\, but there are some segments on pretty well trafficked roads.  Not a ride for the complete beginner but an interesting outing for most.
