SUMMARY:Rotherhithe Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced Southwark Cyclists Healthy Ride\, this time a perambulation around the Rotherhithe Peninsula.  when Surrey Docks were redeveloped in the 1980s  a network of off-road paths was created.  So it is possible to design a 10 mile ride that is almost traffic free.  and thee are many points of interest\, including the Salter statues\, Surrey Docks Farm\, the new Surrey Canal Linear Park\, and the Barry Mason Memorial Bench beside Greenland Dock.  Everyone welcome.  Route at https://goo.gl/5pFd9b  or GPX at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/spring-summer-2017.html \nThis ride also forms part of Bike Week. SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Ride to work with these lovely people. Or people who look like them. Surprisingly normal really and not at all puffed out. They are all cycling by themselves now and wave when they meet us. Make friends on your way to work. \n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to and inexplicable popular demand to get out of bed earlier. That means 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up. \nThe google map of the route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12. The bit from North Dulwich runs by arrangement. Just ask. \nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and beyond
DESCRIPTION:This lovely sight is Burgess Park last summer on the Bike Train route. At 140 acres it’s one of London’s largest parks\, assembled out of the wreckage of war and containing listed buildings\, a lime kiln and former almshouses (now a cafe). \nOne of the great things about cycling is that it takes you where cars can’t go. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. SUMMARY:Canada Water to the South Bank - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Meet beside Canada Water Library\, opposite the station. \nReally easy ride – 14km (8.4 miles) with no hills.  Plan is to use the Quietway 14 alignment for the outward leg.  Some work has recently started on bits towards the west\, e.g. on Snowsfields and Union St.  But mostly this is still just a paper route\, although the eastern half follows the familiar National Route 4.  Should be time for a short break at Bernie Spain Gardens.  Return using Quietway 1.  This has been open more than a year and the eastern stretches are proving popular.  We will follow this all the way from Upper Ground to the Millwall stadium.  Then get back to Canada Water using Nat Route 425.  Lots of quiet streets\, some on paths.  Plenty of interest on the route\, which can be found at https://goo.gl/zDxw34

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is at our new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I didn’t notice one. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to Cody Dock
DESCRIPTION:this is one of the monthly “+” Rides starting at 9.30am and returning for 1pm. It’s a sort of stretching exercise for those who want to go that bit further and see more of London than can be cycled in the usual 120mins. \nNext unusual thing is the start line. The ride starts at the Cutty Sark\,in Greenwich\, meeting 9.30 beside the Foot Tunnel entrance. Anyone who feels they can’t get there by themselves but still wants to go should meet Bruce outside Canada Water library at 9am (it’s all getting earlier and earlier\, you notice) and he will lead you down. \nBut what is Cody Dock\, I hear you cry. I searched the internet so you don’t have to. Whatever it is\, it has a Facebook page which says “We are transforming a derelict dock into a creative quarter with community gardens and footpaths that will open up the Lower Lea River for everyone”. Also\, I discover\, Cody Dock is on the north side of the river in the Lower Lea Valley in East London. \nThe route goes along the Thames Path to the Woolwich Ferry. Take the ferry to the other side and then ride over the George and Albert Docks alongside City Airport. SUMMARY:Bike Train to Kings Cross via Blackfriars
DESCRIPTION:Smell the flowers on your way to work. Join the Bike Train. All right you have to put the effort in but hey\, your bike is reliable\, always turns up and you have a whole saddle to yourself. \nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to popular demand to get out of bed earlier.

SUMMARY:Return of Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:The doctor returns after his winter sleep. He will be under Peckham Arch (south end of Surrey Canal Path) ably assisted by his team of elves. \nThe doctor will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and do technical things to your gears which will stop them clicking and jumping and not feeling quite right. He will also give wise advice on whether larger scale or more serious things need doing. \nThe elves have supplies of propaganda\, and info on local cycling matters aka gossip. They don’t have maps because TfL haven’t reprinted them.  Drop by and give them a try.

SUMMARY:Exchanging Places and free Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Take a look at life from the cab of a lorry and see how much (or how horrifyingly little) the driver sees. ‘Exchanging Places’ cycle safety events are run by the Metropolitan Police and allow cyclists to get a better understanding of what drivers of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses see around them by sitting in the cab. \nThe Met’s finest will also security mark your bike — which is a good idea as it means that there is a full record of your bike on file somewhere and if it gets nicked and the police by chance find it\, you might get it back. \nGetting your bicycle visibly security marked and registered acts as a deterrent to potential cycle thieves as they know your bike is traceable\, and reduces your chances of being a victim of cycle theft. And\, if it should be stolen\, registered bicycles and far more likely to be reunited with their rightful owners. \nTeam London Bridge are hosting this event at the junction of Weston Street and St Thomas Street (just outside London Bridge Station)\, 5pm-7pm on Tuesday 4th April. No need to register\, feel free to drop by.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London EARLIER START
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning Southwark Cyclists Bike Train runs again today. This (free!) service will run once a month till Spring. The arrival of Spring will be determined empirically. We will conduct a careful and thorough examination of the weather. Some arrangements have changed as a result of the Bike Train Survey which showed demand for an earlier start.. \n\n\nAn earlier start there therefore is. Fifteen minutes earlier. We start at 7.45 am from Nunhead Station and pick up riders from Peckham Rye station (from the bike stands behind McDonalds) at 7.55am. We are joined by riders from Denmark Hill who leave that station at 7.55am (from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk) and join the train in Burgess Park. \nWe cycle through two parks\, north along a traffic-calmed backstreet\, onto the pavement-cycling lanes along the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle bypass and then onto the lovely new TfL segregation all the way to Blackfriars. Arrival time approx 8.30am. On time every time. Fun and free. \nTo book your seat at Denmark Hill text Liz Eden on 07814 515 715. Don’t turn up without warning at Denmark Hill because this branch line will be demand-led (management speak for “may not run if there are no passengers”). For Peckham or Nunhead contact me on 07842 640 207 — or don’t book anything at all and just turn up. All welcome. Free. \nThe route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49922566210585%2C-0.0963249999999789&z=13 \nUpdate: Practice the route on a day out – with our guide to the history of the area! SUMMARY:Healthy Ride: Canada Water to North Greenwich
DESCRIPTION:Ride to the O2 at North Greenwich. Outward along the Thames Path as far as we can get in an hour. I think probably just past the O2\, maybe as far as the Ecology Park.  Return cutting across the peninsula to Greenwich\, then taking Q1 back to Surrey Canal Rd\, then the railway path route to Canada Water.  If we do it all\, 19km\, but pretty much completely flat. SUMMARY:Mardi Gras Bike Parade
DESCRIPTION:Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday or\, lapsing into English\, Shrove Tuesday. Your last chance to eat sugar\, butter\, eggs and flour for a month. For the first time it will be celebrated in Borough and Bankside with a Bike Parade. \nStarting at 1pm\, decorated bikes\, included disabled-accessible bikes from Wheels for Wellbeing\, will travel a short route through Bankside and Borough\, taking some Mardi Gras colour to the Tate. The exact route is still under discussion but experienced cyclists\, abled and dis-abled are needed to marshal the ride plus some arty/crafty types to decorate the bikes. \nThe day will round off with a free Mardi Gras Pancake Party. Children are invited to come after school from 3:30 to 5pm for pancake flipping contests\, fresh pancakes\, live music and a chance to ride the decorated Mardi Gras bikes. The party will take place next to The Fruit Tree on Great Suffolk Street\, SE1 1PE. \nExperienced cyclists are needed both to ride the accessible bikes and to join in on their own bikes. The Parade will be marshalled and riders with experience of guided group cycling are particularly needed. Children\, sadly\, are not allowed on the Parade but can try the accessible bikes at the Pancake Party. All riders must register in advance. \nTo take part\, apply via the website https://se1mardigras.wordpress.com or email hmdigitalprojects@gmail.com.
