SUMMARY:New Members Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Cycle campaigning is simpler than you think\, but we need volunteers. \nSouthwark Council and TfL won’t act without evidence that local people want cycling improvements. We need a bigger team to help us build cycling in Southwark and gather evidence that people support Space for Cycling. You can be a resident\, employee or business\, and even 15 minutes of your time will make a difference. \nTo learn more\, why not visit our “New Volunteers Meet-Up” on the 4th of July\, 6.30-8.30pm\, at The Grove pub on Camberwell Grove (formerly the Grand Union). You can drop in for 10 minutes or stay all evening. \nIf you’ve already got an idea but you don’t know how to achieve it\, then come along and we’ll happily give advice. You usually need enthusiasm more than expertise! \nIf you’re interested in helping but you don’t know what to do\, we need individuals and teams of volunteers to do things like: \n– Identify problems on a route\n– Ride a proposed cycle route with Southwark Council planners\n– Write to local councillors\n– Teach a new cyclist a good commuter route\n– Write up a good cycling route for our website\n– Hand out recruitment or campaigning leaflets one morning\n– Add information about local problems to our wiki\n– Help marshal a Dr Bike session and advertise it to passers-by\n– Help load and unload bikes for the Dunwich Dynamo ride\n– Write to politicians about Direct Vision lorries\n– Project manage a group response to a Quietway or Superhighway proposal\n– Help make the proposed Dog Kennel Hill controlled parking zone better for cycling\n– Start organising Autumn Cycle to Work day\n– Run a hackspace\n– Help us to communicate our campaigns better \nA lot of new cycle routes are being proposed by Southwark Council and the Mayor of London – but if we don’t demonstrate enough community support they aren’t going to happen. If you want to know more about potential improvements near you\, come along to the meet up or email southwark “at” lcc.org.uk \np.s. Seeing as you’ve read to the end\, why not answer the one-question Southwark Council Cycle Parking consultation\, if you live in affected streets.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to and inexplicable popular demand to get out of bed earlier. That means 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up. \nThe google map of the route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12. The bit from North Dulwich runs by arrangement. Just ask. \nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\nWe are part of the London Cycling Campaign but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but not all of us so you don’t have to and nobody pays anything. It’s all free

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is at our new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I didn’t notice one. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and onwards
DESCRIPTION:This is a picture of me gazing over the parapet of Blackfriars Bridge. It’s my back so it’s my front that’s gazing. Behind me thousands of energetic cyclists are powering their way to work. Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you fit\, helps you live longer and costs nothing. Plus it’s fun. See here for health evidence:  https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/cycling-to-work-associated-with-major-health-benefits-new-study/ \nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to popular demand. That means 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (quite small amounts accepted). SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and beyond
DESCRIPTION:This lovely sight is Burgess Park last summer on the Bike Train route. At 140 acres it’s one of London’s largest parks\, assembled out of the wreckage of war and containing listed buildings\, a lime kiln and former almshouses (now a cafe). \nOne of the great things about cycling is that it takes you where cars can’t go. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to popular demand to get out of bed earlier. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map of the route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12. The Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill bit only runs by special arrangement so if you want it let the special arrangers (me) know

SUMMARY:Canada Water to the South Bank - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Meet beside Canada Water Library\, opposite the station. \nReally easy ride – 14km (8.4 miles) with no hills.  Plan is to use the Quietway 14 alignment for the outward leg.  Some work has recently started on bits towards the west\, e.g. on Snowsfields and Union St.  But mostly this is still just a paper route\, although the eastern half follows the familiar National Route 4.  Should be time for a short break at Bernie Spain Gardens.  Return using Quietway 1.  This has been open more than a year and the eastern stretches are proving popular.  We will follow this all the way from Upper Ground to the Millwall stadium.  Then get back to Canada Water using Nat Route 425.  Lots of quiet streets\, some on paths.  Plenty of interest on the route\, which can be found at https://goo.gl/zDxw34

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride to Cody Dock
DESCRIPTION:this is one of the monthly “+” Rides starting at 9.30am and returning for 1pm. It’s a sort of stretching exercise for those who want to go that bit further and see more of London than can be cycled in the usual 120mins. \nNext unusual thing is the start line. The ride starts at the Cutty Sark\,in Greenwich\, meeting 9.30 beside the Foot Tunnel entrance. Anyone who feels they can’t get there by themselves but still wants to go should meet Bruce outside Canada Water library at 9am (it’s all getting earlier and earlier\, you notice) and he will lead you down. \nBut what is Cody Dock\, I hear you cry. I searched the internet so you don’t have to. Whatever it is\, it has a Facebook page which says “We are transforming a derelict dock into a creative quarter with community gardens and footpaths that will open up the Lower Lea River for everyone”. Also\, I discover\, Cody Dock is on the north side of the river in the Lower Lea Valley in East London. \nThe route goes along the Thames Path to the Woolwich Ferry. Take the ferry to the other side and then ride over the George and Albert Docks alongside City Airport. Cut through the University under Cypress station and up through Becton Park then pick up the Greenway to Three Mills and down to Cody Dock via the new bridge at Bow Locks. Back along the Limehouse Cut\, Thames Path Northside round the Isle of Dogs\, and the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. \nMore info on Cody Dock is here: [www.gasworksdock.org.uk] but don’t ask me why it’s got a street address in Canning Town. The leader is Amanda. You can text Bruce on 07729 279 945 \nUs: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/healthy-ride-to-cody-dock/

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Kings Cross via Blackfriars
DESCRIPTION:That’s a picture of my back looking over the Thames with a consciousness of a job well done. Come with us on the Bike train and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is earlier than it was last year due to popular pressure to get out of bed.
