SUMMARY:Dr Bike comes to Bermondsey
DESCRIPTION:I couldn’t truthfully tell you that this is a good likeness of our bike doctor. In fact I could truthfully tell you that it isn’t. However I could also truthfully tell you that he’s very good at his job and works very hard. \nHe’s coming to Quietway 1 for the first time with supporting bike health workers. With the bike nurses he will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and pumping up tyres as well as giving wise advice. The doctor likes a challenge so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. \nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe).

SUMMARY:Commuter Ride to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Come with us and enjoy your commute. No stress\, no pushing\, congestion or crowded trains. Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you fit and costs you nothing — well maybe not nothing but a lot less than the train. Smell the flowers as you speed by. \n\nWe use off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. The Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \n\nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12 \nNota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Get this top class mechanic working on your bike. See the Arch in the background. Two mechanics — one professional and one amateur — will tighten your brakes\, index your gears and adjust your bike to fit you. \nTheir hangers-on will offer you literature about cycling in Southwark and TfL maps but sadly\, no coffee. \n\n\n\nTo help you find all the wonderfulness\, Peckham Arch looks like this: [upload.wikimedia.org] And the map to find the Arch looks like this: [www.bing.com

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nLast year we took August off but this year we’re so busy we are meeting as usual — sorry guys\, I tried but they are all too committed. No speaker (unless I’ve arranged one and forgotten) just heads down. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVery respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I didn’t notice one. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and beyond
DESCRIPTION:This delightful spot is our pick-up point by Denmark Hill Station. It’s a good cafe too and I must confess to enjoying the car-free peacefulness of the seats\, flowers and planters. The route goes down here round the corner and then straight until it joins Camberwell Grove. Down the hill\, through the backstreets and into Burgess Park. \nThere it meets the rest of the ride and continues up Portland Street\, along the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the E&C bypass and onto the lovely segregation. We buddy you all the way to your destination and buddy you back. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars.  \nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. We get to Blackfriars at 8.30am. SUMMARY:Freecycle: Ride London
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists will be leading a feeder ride to the Prudential Ride London event.  There will also be a led return.  Ride will be fully marshalled and suitable for all cyclists of any age.  Meeting place is at the Cafe on Strakers Rd\, in the middle of Peckham Rye Park. \nThe cafe is marked in a slightly weird place on the map. it is right beside Strakers Road rather than as marked (as anyone who knows the park will know) over in the bushes. \nAfter 10 mind bending minutes of trying to draw a map I will just say that a lot of the route is down parks\, green spaces\, on-pavement cycle lanes and cycle superhighways. \nThere are two pick-up points on the way — the first at around 10.10am will be under Peckham Arch which is the access point into Peckham Square from Rye Lane. Eleanor will be meeting and greeting and the Arch looks like this: \n \nWe will meet a group from the north of the borough at Burgess Park Cafe (which is 200 Albany Road if you want to look at it on a google map) at 10.30am. A group from Crystal Palace are also expected to join us here and then we will all go on together to Southwark Bridge. \nAfter that it’s every man\, woman and child for themselves. The return ride is not at all compulsory but if you want to come back as well then details will be finalised on arrival. \nDetails: \nRoute: Southwark to Southwark Bridge\nStart point: Strakers Road\, Peckham Rye Park\, Peckham SE15 3UA\nEnd point: Southwark Bridge\nStart time: 10:00\nDistance: Five miles\nReturn ride start point: Southwark Bridge\nReturn ride start time: 15:00 \nMore info at https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/freecycle/rider-info/led-rides/   (Includes info on other borough led rides.) \nWe are part of the London cycling campaign but you don’t have to be to join. Everything we do is free and everyone is welcome. \n\n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Come and meet our all-knowing\, all-seeing mechanic who distributes wisdom and bike knowledge to those who have ears to hear. The accompanying elves are pretty wise too though a lot more modest. \n\nGet these tools to work on your bike in London’s most skilled hands. Dr Bike and his expert team will fine-tune your bike — tighten the brakes\, index the gears and pump up the tyres. His team of support workers will be offering maps\, info and gossip. Sadly\, no coffee. \nThe new TfL cycling maps will be available and freely distributed if you get there on time. If you want to order your own you can do that here: https://tfl.gov.uk/forms/12419.aspx . You can only order 6 at a time unless you pretend to be very important in which case they probably try and send you a bill. \nTo help you find all the wonderfulness\, Peckham Arch looks like this: [upload.wikimedia.org] And the map to find the Arch looks like this: [www.bing.com]

SUMMARY:Dr Bike and Bike Marking
DESCRIPTION:Get your bike checked over and security marked. All free. Mechanics will be tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres and indexing your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. \nBack in the day the police used to offer Bike Marking for free as part of their fight against crime. They can’t afford to do that now so Team London Bridge are stumping up to offer a bike marking service. \nBest is not to get your bike stolen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxBmfvwJnZM. Starring our own much-loved Barry Mason. Two good locks. \nNext best is to get it back again. Register your bike. https://www.bikeregister.com \n

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and onwards
DESCRIPTION:This is one of London’s largest and little-known parks. There’s 140 acres of it. Cyclists can use it but mysteriously not a lot do. Burgess Park and the Canal Path make up about a third of the Bike Train route. The segregated cycle lanes are about another third and traffic calmed backstreets are the final bit. The Bike Train goes through here. Nice. \nYou get the idea. The Bike Train route is mostly off-road with hundreds and hundreds of added cyclists. Come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12. The bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (quite small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that it runs. \n\n\n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Have toolkit will travel. Meet our all-knowing\, all-seeing mechanic who distributes wisdom and bike knowledge to those who have ears to hear.

SUMMARY:Talk by Hackney Family Cycling
DESCRIPTION:As part of Southwark Cyclists bid for world domination we have been thinking of copying Hackney. They have a Family Cycling Library of bikes useful for families\, carrying children\, babies\, toddlers\, and lots and lots of shopping — bike seats\, trailers\, cargobikes\, tagalongs and other bits of family cycling equipment – all free to borrow. \nThe picture gives you the idea and shows founder Ruth-Anna Macqueen of Hackney Family Cycling who is coming to our monthly meeting to tell us how she set it up and how it operates. https://hackney.cc/events/hackney-family-cycling-library-launch-and-family-ride/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n \nVery respectable.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Calling all film stars. Join the celebrated Bike Train. We’re getting so famous that National Geographic want to film us. I’m not entirely sure why. I haven’t been photogenic for a long time. Some of our riders are cute I suppose (male and female). The route is very good-looking but not their usual sort of thing (see pic). \nCome with us before we get airborne and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. SUMMARY:New Members Meet-Up
DESCRIPTION:Cycle campaigning is simpler than you think\, but we need volunteers. \nSouthwark Council and TfL won’t act without evidence that local people want cycling improvements. We need a bigger team to help us build cycling in Southwark and gather evidence that people support Space for Cycling. You can be a resident\, employee or business\, and even 15 minutes of your time will make a difference. \nTo learn more\, why not visit our “New Volunteers Meet-Up” on the 4th of July\, 6.30-8.30pm\, at The Grove pub on Camberwell Grove (formerly the Grand Union). You can drop in for 10 minutes or stay all evening. \nIf you’ve already got an idea but you don’t know how to achieve it\, then come along and we’ll happily give advice. You usually need enthusiasm more than expertise! \nIf you’re interested in helping but you don’t know what to do\, we need individuals and teams of volunteers to do things like: \n– Identify problems on a route\n– Ride a proposed cycle route with Southwark Council planners\n– Write to local councillors\n– Teach a new cyclist a good commuter route\n– Write up a good cycling route for our website\n– Hand out recruitment or campaigning leaflets one morning\n– Add information about local problems to our wiki\n– Help marshal a Dr Bike session and advertise it to passers-by\n– Help load and unload bikes for the Dunwich Dynamo ride\n– Write to politicians about Direct Vision lorries\n– Project manage a group response to a Quietway or Superhighway proposal\n– Help make the proposed Dog Kennel Hill controlled parking zone better for cycling\n– Start organising Autumn Cycle to Work day\n– Run a hackspace\n– Help us to communicate our campaigns better \nA lot of new cycle routes are being proposed by Southwark Council and the Mayor of London – but if we don’t demonstrate enough community support they aren’t going to happen. If you want to know more about potential improvements near you\, come along to the meet up or email southwark “at” lcc.org.uk \np.s. Seeing as you’ve read to the end\, why not answer the one-question Southwark Council Cycle Parking consultation\, if you live in affected streets.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to Blackfriars and central London
DESCRIPTION:We use the lovely segregated cycle lanes up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. They look like this but with thousands of extra bikes. \n\n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to Kings Cross via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to and inexplicable popular demand to get out of bed earlier. That means 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and then a group goes north to Kings Cross and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up. \nThe google map of the route is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12. The bit from North Dulwich runs by arrangement. Just ask. \nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is at our new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below).

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London and onwards
DESCRIPTION:This is a picture of me gazing over the parapet of Blackfriars Bridge. It’s my back so it’s my front that’s gazing. Behind me thousands of energetic cyclists are powering their way to work. Cycling makes you happy\, keeps you fit\, helps you live longer and costs nothing. Plus it’s fun. See here for health evidence:  https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/cycling-to-work-associated-with-major-health-benefits-new-study/ \nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train is at a new earlier time due to popular demand. The bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (quite small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \nWe are part of the London Cycling Campaign but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but not all of us and you certainly don’t have to. And you don’t have to pay\, it’s free

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:This is a picture of my back as I peacefully gaze over the parapet of Blackfriars Bridge. For pretty well the whole way there the biggest hazard is other cyclists.
