SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:Let the Doctor check your bike. The Doctor and his bike health workers will tighten your brakes\, pump up your tyres and index your gears. Never make those strange noises again when you brake or change gear. The doctor likes to be challenged so bring your problems along. \nHis aides and attendants will be handing out literature\, discussing the latest news on bringing safe cycling to the Old Kent Road and gossiping. Everything is free. Everyone is welcome. A good time will be had by all unless it rains in which case I don’t know what we will do. No Bike Marking. Sorry. \n\nThe google map below is more or less right. In practice we will be a little closer to the traffic lights on the opposite corner of Lynton Road to Crol and Co (77 Dunton Road) (excellent cafe). \n\n

SUMMARY:Bike Train and Bike Taxis
DESCRIPTION:The Bike Train has fans (lots of them) but we recognise it can’t be perfect for everyone. That’s why we are introducing Bike Taxis. These will be customised rides designed for individuals. For some people the Bike Train just doesn’t work. They don’t work on Wednesdays or they don’t like Blackfriars Bridge. If I’m describing you just get in touch and we will discuss Bike Taxis in greater depth. \nThe Bike Train will still run. It’s a commuter ride leaving out the crush\, the waiting\, the heat and the congestion. We take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I’m the pace-setter and I go about 8mph. Occasionally I overtake (small) children but I’m generally overtaken by everyone else. \n\n\n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station. The starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds. Today we are using Quietway 1 — London’s first and best Quietway. It runs from Greenwich to Waterloo with spurs to all bridges and it runs close to Peckham and Nunhead. \nWe get to the river about 8.30am and then we can split up depending on which where you are going and which bridge you want to use. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). \n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:Last Dr Bike under Peckham Arch in 2017
DESCRIPTION:What can I say? The grief\, the despair. Nothing to do but stay at home in the warm and drink. The final opportunity of 2017 to get someone to work on your bike for nothing. They may be grumpier than usual. They may be cold. \nNevertheless they are still good workers. The good Doctor and his attendant bike nurses will fettle your bike. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up your tyres and warn you to clean your chain. Their bike health care assistants have maps\, info\, and lots of local cycling-related gossip. \nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. We are all part of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns to make London safer for cyclists (what could be better?). Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of live in Southwark but you don’t have to. As at all the best parties\, there are no rules\, just wander up.

SUMMARY:Bike Train and Bike Taxi
DESCRIPTION:This is your (aging) train crew. I’m the bald one in the middle with my husband Bob on my right and my boss\, Andy\, co-ordinator of southwark cyclists on my left. We are pausing for thought near the BMX track in Burgess Park. We don’t think much so it was a short stop. \nIf we are spared by Hurricane Lulu\, the Bike Train will run via QW1 this Wednesday. This Quietway is really quiet — lots of cyclists use it but traffic counts are very low. It crosses the approach roads to Tower Bridge\, London Bridge\, Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge and is a good way to get to all of them. Not that I am recommending London Bridge\, although lots of people do use it\, it wouldn’t be my first choice. \nQuietway 1 passes quite close to Peckham but is slightly tricky to find. After that it’s well signposted\, reasonably straight and widely used by cyclists as befits such a well constructed route. The only tricky bit is understanding that this quiet backstreet leads to other quiet backstreets and on to yet more quiet backstreets until you are there. \nWe start from outside Nunhead station at 7.45am and pick up riders at Peckham Rye Station (by the bike stands behind McDonalds) ten minutes later. We arrive at the river around 8.30am depending on which bridge or bridges get the nod. \n\nFurther progress depends on where you want to go. Please text ahead to say you are coming and where you want to go to. I’m on 07842 640 207. The branch line from Denmark Hill will not run unless booked ahead. Return rides arranged on request. \n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:We’ve invited speakers representing British Land to come and talk to us about what’s going on at Canada Water. British Land has spent five years assembling the Canada Water site. \nIt includes Surrey Quays Shopping Centre and Harmsworth Quays\, the former Daily Mail General Trust printing works. Last piece in the jigsaw was its acquisition of Surrey Quays Leisure Park in March this year. The combined sites have potential for around 5.5 million sq ft of office\, retail\, residential\, leisure\, educational and community space. The size of the site makes the re-developer a big player in Southwark and staff have acknowledged “concerns” about CS4. They will be on first at 6.30pm. \nThe meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, left into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nLast time I said that\, sadly\, there was no pub in the area. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I haven’t noticed anything. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The dark adds a little romance to Dr Bike as the night’s draw in. It gets cold and wet too so the workers may be huddled together under the Arch to keep warm. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up your tyres and warn you to clean your chain. Their bike health care assistants have maps\, info\, and lots of local cycling-related gossip. \nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. SUMMARY:To central London by Bike Taxi and Bike Train
DESCRIPTION:It seems to be just me who finds black cabs romantic. Most people immediately associate them with enormous fares. Anyway Bike Taxi will not be romantic (during working hours at any rate) and they are free. \nThe idea is that your Bike Taxi will take you anywhere you wish to go — any time\, any place — by arrangement. Which means if your Bike Taxi-driver is up for getting you there. So you say what you want to do and we find someone to get you there. Your flexible friend. \n\nThe Bike Train starts at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, 7.55am from Peckham Rye Station and 7.55am from Denmark Hill Station. The Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill lines join in Burgess Park which is why it’s OK that they start at the same time. \nThe starting point in Peckham is the bike stands behind McDonalds and at Denmark Hill from outside the cafe in Windsor Walk. Camberwell Grove and Windsor Walk have both been closed since we started so this route keeps getting better. \nOur route takes us through two parks\, up a traffic-calmed back street\, onto the on-pavement cycling lanes on the New Kent Road\, around the Elephant and Castle by-pass and onto the still lovely but no longer so new segregation up St George’s Way and Blackfriars Road. All legal and all as safe as your mother would make it. \nWe get to Blackfriars at 8.30am and anyone who wants can be buddied wherever they want. Return rides arranged on request. For further details or to book your place text 07842 640 207 (me). Or just turn up \nThe map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12 \nNota Bene that the bit from Dulwich Village to Denmark Hill only runs for special occasions and subject to bribery (surprisingly small amounts accepted). So if that’s the bit for you let us know asap so that we run it. \n\n\n\nAnd the cycle.travel map is here: http://cycle.travel/map/journey/41005. The info with the map says we do 500m on major roads so it may not know about the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road — and 130m pushing. No pushing. I’m fine to push when required but it’s not required. \n\n\n\n\n\nSouthwark Cyclists is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for more\, better cycling in London. SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:This isn’t a good likeness of Charlie or Andy but you get the idea. What they have in common is that they are good at fixing bikes. Our bike doctors will be indexing gears\, tightening brakes and fixing tyres and their health assistants will be dispensing maps\, cycling info and gossip. \nCharlie and Andy will be working on Quietway 1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road lights — near the excellent Crol coffee shop. There’s no shelter in this salubrious spot. The current weather forecast shows fluffy white clouds with sunny rays but that may change. If it changes to rain  the doctor may stay in bed. If not\, she’ll see you there. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look like this\, of course\, and neither do his bike health care assistants. But pictures of cheerful and friendly looking young women improve everything. No cycle marking\, sorry\, we’re working on it. \nThe different looking doctor and bike nurses will be fixing brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and offering wise advice. He carries a few (very cheap and very basic) spare parts and tells it how it is. His unmechanical assistants dispense goodwill\, gossip and TfL maps. \nIf that sounds good look for him under Peckham Arch at the north end of Rye Lane/south end of Surrey Canal Path between 5.30-7.30pm. Open to all and all welcome. No charges\, no enquiries into your habits or requests for donations. Free.

SUMMARY:commuter ride to Blackfriars and central London
DESCRIPTION:Meet the team. From the left\, my husband Bob\, me (the bald one) and Andy who’s in charge. Total age around 200 not including Eleanor. The red bike belongs to Eleanor who took the photo. Well\, maybe it doesn’t belong to her. Maybe she borrowed it. \nBut still\, come with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:The meeting is at our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed proceed in an easterly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVery respectable. There is some dispute about this but I have to say I haven’t noticed anywhere to drink. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

DESCRIPTION:The doctor doesn’t look anything like this of course but it’s a media tradition that everything is improved with a picture of a good looking young woman and why should I resist. \nThe three guys that do all the work are not actually bad to look at especially when they are working on your bike. They index gears\, tighten brakes\, pump up tyres and talk seriously about chain health (chains like being cleaned). Assistants will ply you with maps\, gossip and local cycling-related info until you look so bored they can’t help but notice. \n\nAll this for your bike. It’s free. All bikes are welcome. SUMMARY:Dr Bike
DESCRIPTION:Put these tools to work on your bike. We are part of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns to make London safer for cyclists (what could be better?). Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of live in Southwark but you don’t have to. As at all the best parties\, there are no rules\, just wander up.

SUMMARY:Commuter Ride (aka Bike Train) to central London
DESCRIPTION:We are short-staffed today just like the real railways but unlike them we are not cancelled. There is a shortage of station staff at the Peckham Rye Halt so there will be no one waiting for passengers at the bike stands behind McDonalds (see above) but fear not\, Andy is on his way and at 7.55am he will be with you. \n\nCome with us and learn off-road and segregated routes to central London via Blackfriars. We bike-buddy riders to their final destination. Escorted all the way and totally free. \nWe take about 35 minutes to get from Peckham Rye to Blackfriars Bridge and we do not go fast. I go at about 8mph. Andy is faster than me. When he’s trying\, he’s a lot faster than me but he will not be a lot faster than you want to be. He’s nice. Most of us are members but you don’t have to be. Most of us live in Southwark but some of us don’t and you don’t have to. And everything we do is free
