SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:This is Andy\, the brain behind all this free bike maintenance. Cyclists cycle 120 miles to Dunwich on the east coast in the light of the full moon and collapse on Dunwich Beach as the sun rises. Those who don’t feel like cycling the 120 miles back\, climb on a coach and wake up in Surrey Quays. Andy organises those coaches and the profit funds Dr Bike. \nAndy with Bruno and Mike makes up the three volunteers who support ace pro-mechanic Charlie (for pic see July 5th). Together they fix brakes\, index gears\, pump up tyres and knowledgeably discuss bottom brackets. They often but not always carry small parts so it’s best to bring them yourself if you know or suspect that you need them. \nEverything is free. You don’t need to live in Southwark or be a member of anything at all. There isn’t a catch that I’ve come across. People sometimes ask why we’re doing this and TBH I’m not entirely sure but we have a good time and everyone seems pleased with the results. \nYou can find us in Peckham Square between Peckham Pulse and Peckham Library. Assuming that you are going south we will be just before you get to Peckham Arch (which  looks like this): \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Greenwich to High Tor of Thamesmead
DESCRIPTION:This is a leisurely easy-paced ride along the Thames Path from the Cutty Sark to the High Tor of Thamesmead. The High Tor isn’t very high because few places on the Thames flood plain are high but on a clear day you can see the whole of south-east London from the top. \nReal name for the Tor is Gallions Hill which isn’t half as nice. Fanciful folk have claimed that it’s a heathen mound with human sacrifices on the top (no I made that up) It’s actually a twenty-metre-high landmark created from recycled excavated material dug up presumably when they built Thamesmead. A spiral footway/cycleway leads to the paved circle on the summit in the form of a compass. \nOn the way the ride will take in the No-Longer-Missing Link on the Thames Path and admire what the campaigning skills of Greenwich Cyclists have achieved. There will be a stop for a tea break. Suitable for all bikes and no pace too slow. About 20miles in all. It will be led by Sarah on 07900 677 706. No texts please\, she thinks it’s good to talk. \nThis ride is organised by Greenwich Cyclists\, a branch of London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. It’s a very famous and important group so there are counterfeit versions. Their genuine website is here: http://greenwichcyclists.org.uk

SUMMARY:Freecycle Ride to central London
DESCRIPTION:We are leading a ride to the London Freecycle which is a brilliant opportunity to get the whole family together to experience the fun and freedom of cycling on traffic-free roads in central London. It’s part of a festival of cycling led by the Mayor of London. Bits of it are remarkably silly. \n \nThe route takes in the Strand and Lincoln’s Inn Fields and returns to the Victoria Embankment\, taking in a section of the newly opened East-West Cycle Superhighway (CS3). This eight-mile circuit passes all the landmarks most people have heard of — Buckingham Palace\, Trafalgar Square\, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Bank of England. It even goes south of the river to places some people haven’t heard of like Waterloo. \nOur feeder ride starts at 10am outside the cafe in Peckham Rye Park. At this point I should warn you that the cafe may not look like a cafe because it is closed for renovations. Plus the path in front of the cafe which is called Strakers Road (because it used to be a road) is not named on Google maps. So we meet at a cafe that’s sadly closed\, on a path with a little known name. I hope that’s clear. The postcode is SE15 3UA. \nThe ride has set off surprisingly punctually in the past. It’s slow because I am glad to say that lots of kids come. Many of them are faster than me but not all. \nThere will be a pick up point under Peckham Arch near the Pulse and the Library and another at 10.30am by the Park Life Cafe in Burgess Park. The official address of the cafe is 3 Chumleigh St\, SE5 0RJ. Another way of thinking about it is that it is beside the big playground just off the Albany Road and has lots of toddler-sized fountains outside it. \nThis (by now very large) group will join the Freecycle route at Southwark Bridge and there will be a ride back to Peckham from there at 3pm. Everyone welcome. It’s a great fun day. You can register beforehand here: https://app.realbuzzregistrations.com/events/lmel/2018-prl-freecycle/login/ and you will be sent tabards and numbers. You don’t need either. The numbers enable you to find and download any pix the official photographers take of you. You can put the numbers on your bike or not. \nYou can register with the Pru\, you can register with us on southwark@lcc.org.uk or you can not register at all. Everyone welcome.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:This is Andy\, boss of Southwark Cyclists and the man who makes the money that pays Dr Bike. With Charlie (see July 5th) Bruno and Mike he’s part of the Dr Bike team. “Four great guys” as one satisfied customer said. Only three today because Bruno is on holiday. \nThey index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. The supporting cast keeps the queue in order (it doesn’t last long but it does build up sometimes) and dispenses maps\, gossip and cheerful chat. \nYou can find us at the crossroads of Lynton Road and Dunton Road. Just across from Cafe Crol. Nice coffee at Cafe Crol. Interesting heritage bike stands. See pic below

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London (and beyond)
DESCRIPTION:You too can cycle with the Bike Train. We’re tending to use Quietway 1 rather than the route through Burgess Park. The new junction on the park route is a lot better but the on-pavement cycle lanes on the New Kent Road are unsuited to large groups (or indeed anyone) \nQuietway 1 OTOH is a gem. London’s best quietway — indeed the capital’s only good quietway — it’s 10 minutes of quiet park and backstreets from Peckham Town Centre. Come with us and we’ll show you how the most risk-averse can get to central London\, feathers fully unruffled \nWe set off at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, swing by Peckham Rye (meeting at the bike stands behind McDonalds) and then head up glorious Surrey Canal Path. QW1 is only 10 mins very easy ride from Peckham Town Centre. We asked for it to be signposted but TfL won’t allow signposting in case cyclists are misled. I’m pretty sure we are more robust than that but never mind we will show you how it’s found. \nQW1 crosses all the approach roads to the Thames bridges — starting with Tower Bridge\, London Bridge\, Southwark Bridge and finally Blackfriars. Riders can be taken to any one of them\, take your pick and taken on if you let us know in advance. We get to the river around 8.30am \nAny queries text me on 07842 640 207 or mail us on southwark@lcc.org.uk. Everyone welcome. Return rides arranged on request. Most things arranged on request. If the Bike Train doesn’t suit you\, ask about our Bike Taxis — your free personal escort to work.

SUMMARY:Rotherhithe to Peckham Routes- Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride starting and finishing in Deal Porter Square next to Canada Water Library.  9 miles along mostly quiet streets and paths\, so suitable for pretty well any cyclist.  Part of our regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides programme. \nThe Mayor has announced funding for a new cycle route from Rotherhithe to Peckham. This ride will look at existing routes and at places where new developments offer opportunities to improve routes or provide additional quality cycle path. Plan is to go from Canada Water to Peckham\, then back all the way to the Thames by a different route\, then return to Canada Water. \nWe will look at the site proposed in the Canada Water Masterplan (for the redevelopment of the Surrey Quays Shopping Centre and the Printworks) for a new pedestrian/cycle route from Canada Water to Lower Rd.  Then through Southwark Park to Drummond Rd. Will have a look at the old Peak Frean Biscuit Factory where a new ped/cycle route through railway arches to Blue Anchor Lane is planned.  Will finish the outward leg at Peckham Rye Station.  On the return plan to look at the route of the proposed Peckham Coal Line from Rye Lane to Queens Rd.  Then down Asylum Rd\, across to the paths through Bridgehouse Meadows and on to Surrey Quays. Next follow the NR425 route past Greenland Dock\, through Russia Woodland to the Thames at Durands Wharf.  This is the original location proposed for the Rotherhithe-Canary Wharf Bridge. Complete the ride by returning through Russia Woodland to Canada Water with a look at the proposed alignment of the “Greenway” through the old Printworks site. \nAny easy ride of 9 miles with plenty off-road.  Route with annotation at https://goo.gl/5yFntw

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:This is Charlie our professional mechanic. The pic makes him look shy. He isn’t. He’s very\, very professional. Bring him your interesting problems. He likes a challenge and no one has yet brought him a problem he can’t solve. \nSupporting him is our team of three amateur mechanics (amateur only in the sense that they do other jobs too)\, Mike\, Bruno and Andy who will feature in later bulletins. They will be mending bikes\, indexing gears\, tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres\, fixing that squeak and telling you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nPeckham Arch is due to be demolished but if it hasn’t been we will be under it. it looks like this: \n \nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. We are the Southwark Branch of the London Cycling Campaign and everything we do is free.

SUMMARY:Bike Taxi
DESCRIPTION:This is part of our series of personalised rides which do what it says on the tin and escort riders to where they want to go — within reason folks\, within reason. To arrange one for yourself or your BF contact southwark@lcc.org.uk. \nThis one goes from East Dulwich station to the Tower of London. There are routes to do it which don’t involve going over Tower Bridge but the escorted cyclist chose to look her fears in the eye. Tower Bridge is not as scary as it looks because the ferocious speed control on the bridge itself keeps the motors under control — it’s the junctions at either end of it which can feel less enjoyable and we shall be keeping those to a minimum. \nTo join or arrange a different one\, contact the email address above or text 07842 640 207. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:Our team of four is led by professional mechanic Charlie\, with three ace amateurs\, Andy\, Mike and Bruno. Andy co-ordinates Southwark Cyclists (I’m not sure what that means but I think it must be a bit like herding cats) and Bruno co-ordinates HMG (ditto) \nWhen Andy\, Mike and Bruno are baffled\, I’m afraid they pass you on to the queue for Charlie but then you will definitely get the best advice cycling experience and hard-earned knowledge can provide. \nWith his assistants Charlie can index your gears\, tighten your brakes\, diagnose that squeak and give advice on treatment for your hub gears and bottom bracket. See pic: \n \nEverything is free. We don’t carry parts so if you know (or suspect) that you need new brake blocks or cables it’s best to bring them. There are no restrictions. Occasionally people ask what the catch is. Let me know if you find out. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. You don’t have to join\, sign anything or live in Southwark. Everyone is welcome.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Ride
DESCRIPTION:Welcome the new sun at sun rise at 04.43 BS 2018 on June 21st. In the Northern Hemisphere (where we are) the day of the summer solstice is the longest day of the year (the day with the most daylight and the shortest night). This year the sun will be at its highest at 11.07am on June 21st. There seems to be some idea that it marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer but\, of course\, weather isn’t that neat and tidy. \nThe recently-invented traditional thing to do is to wave your arms around at Stonehenge but what fun is that. Join the new-recently-invented traditional Solstice Ride from Greenwich to Primrose Hill starting at midnight on June 20th and stopping at Bar Italia\, 22 Frith Street\, W1D 4RF eqarly am on 21st June which looks like this: \n \nBar Italia is an institution in Soho and is frequented by locals\, celebrities and those after some of the finest coffee in London. Come here for coffee\, football\, delicious deli treats\, beer\, wine and everything Italian. This 24 hour bar is adorned with iconic imagery and photos\, all telling a story. It’s been around since the 80’s and is a must-visit bar with exciting views over the Soho streets. Or so they say\, I don’t vouch for the truth of every word. \nThe route map is here (new 19.15miles / 30.82km road ride : Summer Solstices 2018 Final) https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4760788.html. It looks a bit hilly at the end but I that is Primrose Hill. The hilly bits in the middle give the impression that it goes over St Paul’s rather than cycling round. The angel on the top will be amused. \nThis is a 19.15 mile ride scheduled to take seven hours so I Bar Italia (open till 4am) may be quite a long and well-lubricated stop. Sunrise at 04.43 as already mentioned and then breakfast as below.  \n More …………… \nSummer solstice 2018 in Northern Hemisphere will be at 11:07 on Thursday 21 June \nThe Earth at midnight during the summer solstice in June 2017 \nThe summer solstice (or festival solstice)\, also known as midsummer\, occurs when a planet’s rotational axis\, or geographical pole on either its northern or its Southern Hemisphere\, is most inclined toward the star that it orbits. On the summer solstice\, Earth’s maximum axial tilt toward the Sun is 23.44°. (Likewise\, the Sun’s declination from the celestial equator is 23.44°.) This happens twice each year (once in each hemisphere)\, when the Sun reaches its highest position in the sky as seen from the North or South Pole \nThe summer solstice occurs during the hemisphere’s summer.[2] This is the June solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and the December solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. Depending on the shift of the calendar\, the summer solstice occurs sometime between June 20 and June 22 in the Northern Hemisphere[3][4] and between December 20 and December 23 each year in the Southern Hemisphere.[5] The same dates in the opposite hemisphere are referred to as the winter solstice. \nAs seen from a geographic pole\, the Sun reaches its highest altitude of the year on the summer solstice. The term is colloquially used like “midsummer” to refer to the day on which solstice occurs. The summer solstice day has the longest period of daylight\, except in the polar regions\, where daytime remains continuous for 24 hours every day during a period ranging from a few days to six months around the summer solstice. \nSTART LOCATION:\nCutty Sark Gardens\, London SE10 9HT\nMAP: https://goo.gl/maps/ruJhf4xh72z \nINTERMEDIATE STOP\nThere will be an an intermediate pick up point by the needle on the South side of London Bridge at 01.00 hours \nREFRESHMENTS\nBar Italia\nAddress: 22 Frith Street\,\nSoho\, London W1D 4RF\nHours: Open ? SUMMARY:Bike Train via QW1
DESCRIPTION:This is my back. My best side. Come on the Bike Train and see more of it. We will be going via Quietway 1 — London’s best indeed only decent quietway. Just shows what can be done and a shame no one is trying to copy it. \nWe set off at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, swing by Peckham Rye (meeting at the bike stands behind McDonalds) and then head up glorious Surrey Canal Path. Just ask.

SUMMARY:Bike Breakfast\, celebrating Bike Week
DESCRIPTION: Two of life’s most pleasurable things. Bikes and breakfast. We will be offering coffee and croissant to all passers by who bring a bike to the traffic lights at the Dunton Road/Lynton Way traffic lights on Quietway 1. \nThe idea is to celebrate Bike Week which has been celebrated every year since 1923. It’s an annual opportunity to promote cycling and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging ‘everyday cycling for everyone’. \nWhether it’s for fun\, as a means of getting around to work or school\, a trip to the local shops or just to visit friends – cycling is for everyday\, for everyone. It shouldn’t need courage to cycle. It should be fun. The success of Quietway 1 shows that when cycling is fun\, it’s for everyone. \nHave a coffee and croissant on us from 7.30am until we run out.

SUMMARY:Rotherhithe Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride using\, as far as possible\, quiet streets and paths. Suitable for all types of cyclist. \nThis ride will use 2 of the new Quietways. Starting at Canada Water a short ride past Greenland Dock and along Oldfield Grove will take us to Q1 at the start of the Millwall Path. Route then follows Q1 past the Den (Millwall Football Stadium)\, over the Connect 2 Bridge then on quiet streets to the South Bank (passing the Old Vic theatre on the way).  A short ride gets us to Superhighway 6 where we will reach the start of Q14 at Nicholson St.  Q14 is a work in progress\, but we can enjoy the 2 new modal filters at Gt Guildford St and Newcomen St and the new crossing of Tower Bridge Rd.  That is where Q14 ends at present. It is planned to continue mostly on the existing National Route 4 alignment and the ride will follow this to the Albion Channel\, turning off there to return to Deal Porter Square. \nQ1 and Q14 are useful routes that provide safe passage east-west across north Southwark.  Q1 is already heavily used and probably when complete Q14 will also prove popular.  Route is 9 miles and flat\, map at https://goo.gl/kV6jUB \nPart of our regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides. SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Peckham Arch looks like this but with a lot (a lot) more cars\, buses\, lorries and\, of course\, cyclists. The sky isn’t blue all the time either. The Arch is due to be demolished and the site turned into houses. It was due to be shut in the autumn of 2017 since legally it has to be shut before it’s pulled down. But so far that hasn’t happened and until it does we will be holding a Dr Bike underneath it on the first Thursday of every month. \nThree mechanics\, one pro and two ace amateurs\, will be mending bikes\, indexing gears\, tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres\, fixing that squeak and telling you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. Everything is free. THERE IS NO CATCH. The next person to snigger knowingly when I say that will be reported to the cynicism police. \nWe are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which works for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. You don’t need to be a member or live in Southwark. Everything we do is free and as welcoming as we can make it.

SUMMARY:Greewich to Cody Dock - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Greenwich Foot Tunnel entrance\, next to Cutty Sark SE10 9HT.  Amanda is going to lead her great route to Cody Dock.  We did this on Jan 20th but weather was awful and only a handful of riders turned up.  So here is another chance to ride this circuit – loads to see\, lots of off road.\nPlan is to ride clockwise starting through the tunnel\, then beside Millwall Docks\, across to Canning Town and thence to Cody Dock. Stop there for a coffee and a look around (look at photos from ride on April 29th\, 2017\, to get an idea).  From Cody Dock\, return is by a long swing up to 3 Mills on the Lee\, pick up the Greenway to Becton\, then south to the Royal Docks (past City Airport) and North Woolwich.  Cross river either by tunnel or\, if possible\, Ferry and home along the south side Thames path past the Flood Barrier and the O2.  Image of route attached below.  About 17 miles and flat\, so over 3.5 hours\, a nice easy pace.\nPart of our regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides. We don’t carry parts so if you know (or suspect) that you need new brake blocks or cables it’s best to bring them. There are no restrictions. You don’t have to join anything or sign anything. Occasionally people ask what the catch is. We’re still working that out. See you there.
