SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The headline is not entirely accurate. As so often — it’s a lot more complicated than that. If it is raining the mechanics will be under the Arch\, sheltering. If it is not raining and looks reasonably likely to stay that way they may well be at the foot of the steps beside the ramp. \nFour mechanics\, one pro and three ace amateurs\, will be mending bikes\, indexing gears\, tightening brakes\, pumping up tyres\, fixing that squeak and telling you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. Everything is free. THERE IS NO CATCH. The next person to snigger knowingly when I say that will be reported to the cynicism police. \nWe are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which works for safe\, enjoyable cycling in London. You don’t need to be a member or live in Southwark. Everything we do is free and as welcoming as we can make it.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:This is Mike. He stopped by one day\, joined in and since then has turned up every time. I’m told that his day job is re-designing the world to make it more bike friendly. A big job but he will be up to it. \nWith Charlie\, Bruno and Andy he makes up the Dr Bike problem-solving team. They do the straightforward stuff: tightening brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and giving wise advice (“That chain needs cleaning”) (“Do you ever check your tyres?”). Embarrassing stuff like that. \nBut what they really like is a difficult problem. One they can all go into a huddle about. Let’s hope it’s not your bike that brings a huddle on. \nThe ground rules are that there aren’t very many ground rules. It’s all free. Everyone is welcome\, you don’t have to live anywhere or belong to anything. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign and this is just a bit of what we do. \nYou can find us on QW1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road traffic lights just across the road from Cafe Crol (see pic below) including fine heritage bike stands)

SUMMARY:Bike Train via Burgess Park
DESCRIPTION:Burgess Park is 140 acres of seriously nice. It’s a young park\, built since the War by planners who believed that recreation and green space were essential parts of life. Quietway 7 runs across from Benhill St in Camberwell to Portland St. \nThe tricky bit has been crossing Albany Road to get to Portland but traffic engineers have built a very safe crossing with segregated space and its own traffic lights to take cyclists safely across. We will be using them on the Bike Train. \nOur route takes us up a greenway\, through Burgess Park\, up Portland St\, onto the New Kent Road cycling by-pass and up the protected bike lane on Blackfriars to Blackfriars Bridge. it’s off-road\, protected or traffic-calmed all the way. No road sharing with juggernauts\, buses or homicidal maniacs in cars too small for their egos. Safe all the way. \nWe leave Nunhead Station at 7.45am\, pick up riders at Peckham Rye Station (at the bike stands behind McDonalds at 7.55am and arrive at Blackfriars Bridge at 8.30am. We can take you on if you let us know where you want to go. \nWe are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign. To ride with us you don’t need to be a member or live in Southwark. This is a no-questions-asked operation. Please let us know if you are coming. Text me on 07842 640 207. Everyone welcome. If the Bike Train doesn’t suit you\, ask about our Bike Taxis — your free personal escort to work. \nroute map is here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1Pq8aj3Ylf1S9eg44QbGvAD4qSbM&ll=51.49177636679164%2C-0.0878830999999991&z=12

SUMMARY:Monthly meeting -- all welcome
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost phone 07842 640 207 and I will walk out and wave my arms around.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:These hands have been working. Put them to work on your bike. They belong to Mike who is one of the three volunteer mechanics led by ace-pro Charlie who make up the Dr Bike team. \nThey will tighten your brakes\, index your gears and pump up your tyres. All the easy stuff. Speak nicely to them and they will also think about your bottom bracket\, sort out your spokes\, fix that squeak and tell you why your back wheel wobbles. We don’t carry parts but if you bring brake pads we can fit them. Use our oil. Listen to our wise advice and ask tricky bike-questions. I’ve learned a lot just by listening. \nThere’s no particular point to any of this apart from making bikes better and being nice to one another. The guys just like doing stuff with their hands. Fixing bikes is their thing. \n\nWe have bike maps\, local gossip to give as well as receive. Everyone is welcome. We are the Southwark Branch of the London Cycling Campaign and everything we do is free.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:This will be at the junction of Brenchley Gardens and Forest Hill Road. Bob Eva is the volunteer. \nDrivers caught speeding get tut tut letters from TfL the first time and even the second time. It’s only the third time they get passed on to the police. The Met send a getting-serious-now letter that includes a fine. \nThat’s why teams have to go to the same place again (and again). Enough to catch the same people several times but not regularly enough to teach them to be wary.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to the Thames at Vauxhall - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:We did this route last year (see report) to demonstrate that you could do a non-hilly ride from Dulwich. Route follows the the “lost” river Effra to the Thames. Outward leg via Brockwell Park to Brixton town centre where traffic can be heavy. Down Brixton Road and round the Oval is gently downhill and mostly uses bus lanes. Will have a stop on Vauxhall Bridge to admire the Effra flowing into the Thames next to MI6. Return ride is via Kennington Park and Myatts Fields. There really are no significant hills on this Dulwich ride. Starting at 131ft and descending to 16 ft. With all the small bumps there is a total of 245ft of ascent\, all low slope stuff. SUMMARY:Healthy Rides Picnic Ride to Thames Barrier
DESCRIPTION:Joint ride for Southwark Cyclists and Bexley Cyclists. Note that you do not have to be a Southwark or Bexley rider to take part. Everyone is welcome.\nThis is a ride to celebrate the Saturday morning Healthy Rides and the opening of the new section of the Thames Path east of the Barrier (the “missing link”). Plus it provides a great opportunity to bring the 2 borough groups together.\nRides will set out as usual for a 3rd Saturday “+” ride at 9.30. Southwark riders from Peckham Square (with later pick ups at Canada Water\, 10.00\, and Cutty Sark\, 10.30). Route from Peckham will be Glengall Rd\, bit of Quietway 1 and Southwark Park to Canada Water. Bexley riders from Danson Park car park. Then Nat Route 4\, mostly Thames Path\, to Greenwich and continuing on Thames Path to the Barrier.\nPlan is to meet up at the Barrier at 11.30. Then the combined group will ride the missing link. If we get a decent turnout there could be 40+ cyclists\, so hopefully some great photos! Everyone then rides back along the link to the Barrier where we have a picnic. All riders need to bring their own food and drink\, or buy it from the Information Centre Café.\nWe would normally aim to get back from a “+” ride at 1pm. Clearly for this ride and picnic we will be much later. The plan is to depart around 1.30 and be back by 3.30. Anyone can\, of course\, leave earlier and get home closer to 1pm but they will have to do their own navigating.\nThis should be a fun day so please try to attend if you can. Also\, as with all Healthy Rides\, anyone who wants to join the rides can do so. New riders are\, as ever\, very welcome. \nRoute at https://goo.gl/kneMyH \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on QW1
DESCRIPTION:This is Mike. He is our quiet one. He stopped one day\, joined in and since then has turned up every time. Rumour has it that his day job is redesigning the world to be more friendly to bicycles. He will be good at it. \nWith Charlie\, Bruno and Andy he makes up the Dr Bike problem-solving team. They do the straightforward stuff tightening brakes\, indexing gears\, pumping up tyres and giving wise advice (“That chain needs cleaning”) (“Do you ever check your tyres?”). Embarrassing stuff like that. \nBut what they really like is a difficult problem. One they can all go into a huddle about. Let’s hope it’s not your bike that brings it on. \nThe ground rules are that there aren’t very many ground rules. It’s all free. Everyone is welcome\, you don’t have to live anywhere or belong to anything. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign and this is just a bit of what we do. \nYou can find us on QW1 at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road traffic lights just across the road from Cafe Crol (see pic including fine heritage bike stands)

SUMMARY:Bike Train to central London
DESCRIPTION:This is my back. My best bit. My front is friendlier\, I like to think. I lead the Bike Train but I don’t go very fast — about 8mph I’m told which is\, of course\, twice walking pace. I think I go faster than that but you get the idea. \nWe’re tending to use Quietway 1 these days rather that the traditional Bike Train route. This is mostly because Quietway 1 is a gem and the Bike Train route is beset by roadworks and people digging it up. All in a worthy cause I’m sure but they get in the way. \n\nWe set off at 7.45am from Nunhead station\, swing by Peckham Rye (meeting at the bike stands behind McDonalds) and then head up glorious Surrey Canal Path. QW1 is only 10 mins very easy ride from Peckham Town Centre. We asked for it to be signposted but TfL won’t allow signposting in case cyclists are misled. I’m pretty sure we are more robust than that but never mind we will show you how it’s found. \nQW1 crosses all the approach roads to the Thames bridges — starting with Tower Bridge\, London Bridge\, Southwark Bridge and finally Blackfriars. Riders can be taken to any one of them\, take your pick and we can take you on if you let us know in advance. We get to the river around 8.30am \nAny queries text me on 07842 640 207 or mail us on southwark@lcc.org.uk. Everyone welcome. Return rides arranged on request. Most things arranged on request. If the Bike Train doesn’t suit you\, ask about our Bike Taxis — your free personal escort to work. \n\n
