The new venue is Camberwell Leisure Centre in Artichoke Place (London’s most unforgettable address) (SE5 8TS).  The guys will be outside on sunny days and inside on chilly/wet ones. DESCRIPTION:The usual wonderful set of guys fixing bikes and dispensing wise advice — mostly about the need to clean your chain. The effect of nagging is such that after five years of hearing them say this I have started doing it every now and again. \nThey are cheerful\, helpful\, knowledgeable and have lots of tools. They will be under or near Peckham Arch which is the big arch-shaped object at the south end of Surrey Canal Path or the north end of Rye Lane (see pic). \nDrop by and get them working for you. SUMMARY:Northern Heights.  London Bridge to Alexandra Palace.
DESCRIPTION:Special 21 mile Bank Holiday ride to Alexandra Palace and back\, using a different route each way.  Begin northwards through the City and Islington. At Canonbury make the first of several contacts with the New River. Continue to Clissold Park (2nd New River sighting)\, then Woodberry Wetlands (New River 3) and Finsbury Park (New River 4).  Roughly following the New River has ensured a flat ride to this point.  But that changes as the route travels north.  From Finsbury Park pick up Quietway 10\, crossing the New River another 2 times. At Alexandra Palace Station\, leave Q10 and ascend to the Palace and collect the reward for climbing\, a view down upon London (and lunch at the Boating Lake Café). \nReturn route runs a bit to the west of the outward route.  Initially along a short part of the Parkland Walk to Muswell Hill then round to Archway Rd close to Highgate Station in order to join the longer section of Parkland Walk\, a green path along disused railway to Finsbury Park (info at https://underground-history.co.uk/northernh.php).  Delightful\, nearly 2 miles of off-road path.  Through the SW corner of Finsbury Park then join Q10 going south past the Emirates Stadium\, through Barnsbury and Legal London to join the East-West Superhighway (CS3) at Temple Avenue.  CS3 to Monument and across London Bridge to finish.  Hope to finish around 3pm as we will be going at our usual rather easy pace with plenty of stops at places of interest.  Everyone welcome on any type of bike. \nRoute worked out by Werner who will be leading.  Route track here http://taffimai.w2.org.uk/healthy-rides/NorthernHeights-20190505.html

DESCRIPTION:Werner has planned a Bazalgette-themed ride. It was 200 years from Joseph Bazalgette’s birth on March 28th. A little late\, we plan to celebrate with a ride around sights associated with the great engineer.  Bound to include the memorial on Victoria Embankment and the blue plaque in St Johns Wood. Also a ride past the Institute of Civil Engineers\, whose president he was.   \nMore notes on route: out over Waterloo Bridge; CS3 on top of Victoria Embankment and Bazalgette Memorial\, St Margaret’s Westminster where he got married; Institute of Civil Engineers in Gt George St\, where he was president (report at time:  “appropriately his presidential address discussed ‘those engineering works which promote the health and comfort of the inhabitants of large cities\, and by which human life may be preserved and prolonged'” – sounds like he was a supporter of bike lanes; Hyde Park; A bit of Q12; Pushing the boundary into St John’s Wood and a look at his blue plaque; Stop in Regent’s Park; Dysfunctional pump in Broad(wick) St and Golden Square; Probably back over London Bridge. \nWill be the usual easy-paced ride.  Everyone welcome\, just turn up with your bike\, and note that all our rides are free. \nNB we are also doing a longer Bazalgette 2 ride on April 22nd\, Easter Monday.  Check the Events listing for details.

DESCRIPTION:Our guys are back with the sunshine\, keen and raring to fix your bike. They will be under or around Peckham Arch (see pic) fixing bikes for all-comers. This service is free and enthusiastic. The bigger your problem the happier they are. They carry small parts like cables but not big ones like wheels. For bike reconstruction you will be referred onto our bike maintenance and tuition service which runs indoors all year round. Roll up.

DESCRIPTION:Build your cycling skills with expert instructors from Cycle Confident. This is a free drop-in four-hour session. You don’t have to book or stay for it all. You do need to bring bikes. Although the flyer says “bikes and helmets” that’s not precisely right. No one needs a helmet as long as the parents consent. If you have still got questions then telephone 0203 031 6730 and ask. \nMeeting point is at the Dulwich Clock Cafe in Dulwich Park (SE21 7BQ). No need to book. Cycle Confident reckon the session is for everyone from complete beginners to old hands who want to “build their skills” aka learn a bit more.

DESCRIPTION:This is led by our Dr Bike mechanics operating at their usual A+++ standards. It is free and open to all. Joint funders are Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants and Residents Association who are providing the hall. You don’t need to live on the Lettsom or in Southwark to take part. You do need to bring a bike (condition immaterial). Don’t wait till spring to get that old wreck out of the shed. Get it out now\, dust off the spiders and bring it along. The only tricky bit is probably finding the hall. A picture is attached but I am told it can be tricky finding the door. I can’t imagine how that works. SUMMARY:AGM and monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Inspirational speaker Michael Barratt\, MBE and the TfL man behind the famous and very wonderful Road Safety Patrols will be the main draw at our AGM. This Patrol is a partnership of TfL\, cyclists (us)\, pedestrian and other stakeholder groups. Their aim is to keep us safe. \nMore about Michael Barratt and his MBE and what it’s for here: https://tinyurl.com/y7qqzccm No one else seems to care but the Road Safety Patrol thinks we matter. They inspect (not on paper but on bikes) all TfL and major development schemes while they are underway and try to make sure that traffic management and construction management implemented does not negatively impact on vulnerable roadusers. They try to keep us alive. \nMr Barratt will be speaking at 6.30. I’m told his talks are good so do come and enjoy it. Sadly he will be followed by the AGM but it is OK to leave at this point. \nMembers wanting to start a revolution are very welcome. Opportunities for a take-over by radical elements are available. Your committee will be very pleased to be overthrown. If you don’t want to go that far there will be reports on what we’ve done\, opportunities for volunteering and the accounts. There is often booze at some point. \nThere will be the ordinary meeting after the AGM for anyone left. The whole affair will be held in the usual place which is 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n\n\n\n\n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub.
