SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:War on the motorist — point a speedgun at a speeding driver. Nothing much happens as a result — TfL sends out sorrowful letters lamenting the law-breaking — but your evidence encourages the real police to join in with real speeding tickets. See pic for one of the speeds they logged. \nThe team will be at or near the junction of Lordship Lane and Court Lane. Wave as you go by or stop and have a chat. They are very nice. SUMMARY:Bike maintenance workshop with tuition
DESCRIPTION:This is led by our Dr Bike mechanics operating at their usual A+++ standards. It is free and open to all. Joint funders are Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants and Residents Association who are providing the hall. You don’t need to live on the Lettsom or in Southwark to take part. You do need to bring a bike (condition immaterial). Don’t wait till spring to get that old wreck out of the shed. Get it out now\, dust off the spiders and bring it along. If it needs wheels you will need to bring them yourself but small parts and expertise are provided free. \nMore details here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/bike-maintenance-workshops-with-tuition/. The only tricky bit is probably finding the hall. A picture is attached but I am told it can be tricky finding the door. I can’t imagine how that works. Any way give it a try and if you find yourself locked outside check the date and time and if both seem correct beat on the door/shout etc.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost shout loudly and someone will walk out and wave their arms around.

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Point a speed gun at a speeding driver — that’s most of them in this spot. The numbers are quite impressive (see pic). SUMMARY:Bike Maintenance Workshop with Tuition
DESCRIPTION:Free workshop open to all. It’s jointly funded by Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants and Residents Association and run by Bruno\, known to all who have used our Dr Bikes. The idea is to fix bikes while showing how to do it and encouraging people to try for themselves. It’s not a course. What gets taught depends on who comes in through the TRA hall doors. \nThe pic shows the TRA hall whose doors are not that easy to find. Although their address is Vestry Road the hall is not actually on Vestry Road (too easy) but down a passage near the shops. More details here:  https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/bike-maintenance-workshops-with-tuition/ . Free and open to all. The only thing you need is a bike (all states accepted).

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Show the Met the community cares about speeding. I’m sure we all do. Community Speedwatch is a collaboration between the community (us) and the police (PCSO Kevin Phillips and friends). The community volunteer — in this case Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva — holds the speed gun and the Met writes down the numbers and sends them off to TfL who writes nasty letters to the drivers. \nIf you get caught three times you have to take an IQ test (no that’s a joke) you get a police fine. So the punishments on offer are not great but it seems to terrify drivers\, reduces their sense of impunity and provides evidence of widespread speeding which it’s useful for the police to see. They will be at the junction of Harper Road and Brockham St.  To volunteer contact kevin.j.phillips@met.pnn.police.uk. He’s very nice (see pic above).

SUMMARY:Sustainability Event @ Peckham and Nunhead CC
DESCRIPTION:CC stands for Community Council and their next meeting will be on Sustainability and Climate Change resilience. Caroline Russell\, Chair of the GLA Environment Committee and leader of the Greens at the London Assembly will be there. Communities involved in sustainability; recycling; food growing; clean energy; plastic free living are promoting their projects at an exhibition table. Cycling is very low emission so Sean Howes will be there for us.

SUMMARY:Peckham to Clapham and Battersea Power Station - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Slight change to original plan. Will miss Clapham Common\, instead going through Clapham itself and on to the new Battersea Power Station developments before returning. Route at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4850794.html. As far as possible on paths and quiet streets\, but likely to be some short busy stretches and a few busy junctions. Several short stops at interesting places. No long coffee stop as only a 2 hour ride. Jane leading this flat 11.6 mile ride. First-timers welcome!

SUMMARY:bike maintenance and tuition
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants & Residents Association (henceforth TRA) are holding free bike maintenance sessions with tuition and hands on assistance. You can bring your bike in for a free check-up; come and learn the basics of bike maintenance\, or just drop in for a chat about anything bike-related. \nThe whole operation is free — you don’t need to live on the Lettsom or even in Southwark. You will need a bike. The man in charge is Bruno whom many people will have met on our summer Dr Bikes. He gets bored in the winter. \nThe sessions will be a mix (depending on need) of teaching (this is how you change brakes) and hands-on assistance. They will be held in the Lettsom TRA hall. The official address is 114 Vestry Road SE5 8PQ. It’s just up the hill from the parade of shops\, and is accessed by a passage on the left of the shops. Picture at the top. All welcome. Free to all.

SUMMARY:Peckham to Severndroog Castle - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:This ride starts at 9.30am from Peckham Square and turns at Severndroog Castle (see pic) on top of Shooters Hill. It ends back in Peckham at 1pm. That’s an earlier start and a later finish than usual and Severndroog Castle is 20m higher than the top of Sydenham Hill which was the previous summit. A new altitude record\, who could resist. \nPeckham Square is between Peckham Library\,and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre at the north end of Rye Lane (SE15 5JR). The outward route will use the bus lanes on busy A202 and A2 to Deptford Bridge and then come off road and use quiet roads to Eltham Well Hall via Lewisham and Kidbrooke Village. \nThere will be a coffee stop at Tudor Barn in Well Hall Pleasaunce [ www.tudorbarneltham.com ]. The website gives the impression it will be open but it looks a bit posh. \nNext comes a short ride to the southwest corner of Jack Wood and the steep (but short) path up to Severndroog Castle. There will be plenty of time to just walk up – the really steep section is only 300m long. \nAfter all that up there will be a fast return route all downhill\, initially using Shooters Hill Road\, then the underpass at the Sun in the Sands roundabout and quiet streets to Greenwich Park. More whizzing down the hill in the park and more quiet streets to Quietway 1 at the Halfpenny Bridge. Finally Quietway 1 to Surrey Canal Rd\, Bridgehouse Meadows and back streets to Peckham Square. \nThere will be several short stops at places of interest plus the one longer coffee stop. First-timers and old hands welcome! Be sure to wrap up warm\, the forecast for Saturday is a high of 5 degrees and a low of nought. The route is here [ www.google.com ]. It’s 16 miles at an easy pace. All welcome. Free and open to all. \n

SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:That’s 51mph in a 20mph zone. Top speed so far 66mph. Speeding drivers claim to be the best judge of their own speed and (anyway) if it mattered the police would do something about them. The police meanwhile warm and snug in their cars\, unaware that drivers are on their best behaviour all round them\, feel there isn’t much of a problem. \nCommunity Speedwatch — a co-operative effort between the police and the community — has shown how big a problem there is. Representing the community today near the junction of South Croxted Road and the south circular will be Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva with his comrade-in-arms PCSO Kevin Phillips.

DESCRIPTION:Jeremy Leach of Southwark Living Streets and a 20s Plenty campaigner will be holding the speedgun at the junction of Southwark Bridge Road and Sawyer Street. The signs on the road say 20. They are big enough. Somehow drivers find them hard to see. You can join in. DESCRIPTION:That’s the best speedwatch result in a 20mph zone so far. But others come close. Volunteer to hold the speedgun and see if you can better it. The community (represented by in this case by Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva) and the police (PCSO Kevin Phillips) catch drivers speeding and do something about it. SUMMARY:Dulwich Air Quality and School Streets meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dulwich Society meeting to discuss “Getting Around Dulwich: towards a healthier\, safer and more active future”. Air pollution and car ownership are high in Dulwich and many elderly people feel very dependent on their cars. \nA parent\, Dr Henrietta Collier\, from Bessemer Grange primary school will tell them about the success of their street closure in keeping the school run at bay and encouraging more active travel. A complete closure is already in place around Bellenden School and school-run barriers are planned at Robert Browning JMI off the Walworth Road. \nDr Helen Wood\, an academic at Queen Mary’s researching “The health effects of traffic-related air pollution”\, MP Helen Hayes and Southwark Cabinet member with responsibility for Air Pollution reduction\, councillor Richard Livingstone\, will also speak. \nMore controversially the meeting will discuss Controlled Parking Zones and Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture below).

You can bring your bike in for a free check-up; come and learn the basics of bike maintenance\, or just drop in for a chat about anything bike-related. \nThe whole operation is free — you don’t need to live on the Lettsom or even in Southwark. SUMMARY:Community Speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:This activity is called Community Speedwatch in the rest of the country but Boris Johnson felt Community Roadwatch was less offensive to the motoring lobby. However we will call it by its proper name which is a good description of what it does — point a speed camera at drivers going too fast and then tick them off. Car-crushing would be nice but even finger-wagging is a start. \nThe police need civilian protection so the drivers don’t get too offensive. Bob Eva will be representing Southwark Cyclists and holding the gun on Sydenham Hill at the junction with Crescent Wood Road. PCSO Kevin Phillips (see pic) will be writing the numbers down with added tellings-off for using a phone while driving\, going through no entry signs\, jumping red lights. I could go on.

DESCRIPTION:College ward Southwark councillor will be behind the speedgun near the junction of Dulwich Wood Park and Kingswood Road. The Speedwatchers had good hauls here pre-Christmas — let’s see if the thrill of speeding downhill continues to appeal in the dreary days of January. To join in mail kevin.j.phillips@met.pnn.police.uk (pictured above). Community volunteers get a say in which road the team choose. Pick your favourite racetrack and if you catch enough the police may join in.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride via Hackney
DESCRIPTION:This +Plus ride will explore the City and Hackney en route to St Pancras and home again. Like all the +Plus rides it starts earlier at 9.30am and finishes at 1pm — offering the opportunity to explore new bits of London before lunch. \nThe ride starts outside Canada Water library where there are seats overlooking the water. Canada Water station has lifts which will take three full-size bikes but not all stations are so hospitable. East Dulwich Station has walk up access to trains and Queens Road has a lift (in theory\, check it’s working before basing your plans on it). Nunhead and Peckham Rye are inhospitable for bikes with lots of steps and no lifts. In fact\, check whether the Overground will be working at all because as of this moment it appears it may not. \nWerner will be leading the group north from Canada Water via Southwark Bridge and quietly through the City\, using CS1 to cross Great Eastern St and Old St safely. Once in Hackney they will pick up Quietway 2 and follow it to Cycle Superhighway 6 and St Pancras where there will be a coffee stop before turning for home. \nThe pace will be easy. The atmosphere cheerful. No need to book. The ride is free for all. These rides are organised by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. SC is the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. Everything we do is free and open to all. No need to belong to LCC or live in Southwark.

SUMMARY:Boxing Day Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:I know we are all thinking so hard about Christmas Day that it’s difficult to think about the world afterwards. However for all those who think that it might be nice to get out of the living room and into the fresh air (and especially nice to take the kids away from their electronics) here is a Boxing Day ride. \nIt’s part of the series of Saturday rides though of course not on a Saturday. So it is two hours long\, easy paced\, open to all\, no need to book and free for everyone. It starts from Canada Water at 10am. East Dulwich station has easy access by bike and there are lifts at Canada Water which will take 3 full-size bikes at a time. \nIt will be led by Werner and head into town to look at Sculptures in the City and enjoy the empty City streets. Info on Sculpture in the City is here: [www.sculptureinthecity.org.uk]. Among the highlights is a Tracy Emin near the Gherkin and a picture is attached. \nNo need to book. Just turn up. These rides are organised by Bruce Lynn and friends on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. They are open to everyone. You don’t need to be a member of the group\, or the LCC or to live in Southwark.

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:NOTE CHANGE OF START/FINISH LOCATION.  Meet 9.30 at Southwark Needle\, on south east corner of London Bridge\, top of Duke St Hill\, adjacent to London Bridge station.  Ride into Central London\, look at some of the Christmas lights. Plan is to get to extend the westward reach of rides to Notting Hill. Also will take a turn past Parliament to celebrate the first election with both sexes voting (anniversary Dec 14th). Wikipedia says “The British General Election on the 14 December 1918 was held just a month after the Armistice. Under the terms of the new Representation of the People Act\, the electorate now included most women aged over thirty and all men over twenty-one. A special provision also lowered the voting age to nineteen for those who had served in the war. The new electorate\, at 21\,392\,322\, was nearly triple what it had been in the previous election of December 1910 (7\,709\,981).” Often referred to as “The Khaki Election”.  Finish 1pm back at London Bridge.  There will be a coffee stop somewhere.  Should be quite a ride!  But all at our usual easy pace.  Everyone welcome.
