SUMMARY:Climate Strike on a bike: demonstrate with us
DESCRIPTION:LCC is organising a family friendly ‘Climate Strike on a Bike’ with Parents for the Future. Ride with us through the streets of London in support of School Strikers\, on what’s anticipated to be London’s biggest school climate strike yet. \nWe are running a feeder ride to get you safely to the demo. The meet-up on the south side is at Waterloo. Our ride starts at the ice cream kiosk at South Norwood Lakes at 9.30am and picks up strength at Crystal Palace Overground station (9.40am)\, College Gate at Dulwich Park (opposite Dulwich Gallery) at 10am; Green Dale at 10.20 am and the Albany Road/Portland St junction in Burgess Park at 10.40. Then up Quietway 7 to the south side of Waterloo Bridge using Blackfriars Road and Upper Ground. ETA 11am. \nClimate change is the biggest threat facing humanity. Read what we think here: https://lcc.org.uk/articles/join-the-climate-strike-on-a-bike and join the LCC campaign for a safer future here: https://membership.lcc.org.uk/join-our-climate-campaign

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Quietway 1
DESCRIPTION:Our guys are back\, keen and raring to fix your bike. They will be opposite Cafe Crol (see pic) at the Dunton Road/Lynton Way traffic lights\, fixing bikes for all-comers. This service is free and enthusiastic. The bigger your problem the happier they are. They carry small parts like cables but not big ones like wheels. \nThey do their best but for bike reconstruction (just out of the shed and covered in spiders) you are likely to be referred on to our bike maintenance and tuition service which runs all year round at the Lettsom TRA hall in Camberwell. Ask for details when you drop by…………….

SUMMARY:free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:Free and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in.. What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. These evening bike-fixing sessions are a joint venture between Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants & Residents Association and are held in the TRA hall. That’s not a super-easy thing to find so a useful picture of the hall is above. Vestry Road\, up the hill passed the shops and down an alley on your left is the best verbal description I’ve been given. See below for full address. The whole shebang is free\, cheerful and open to anyone. No ID checks. You need to bring a bike to get full benefit. For more info email southwark@lcc.org.uk though that can be slow\, keep an eye on @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost shout loudly and someone will walk out and wave their arms around.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to Vauxhall Bridge - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Usual easy-paced ride using a lot of quiet streets and paths as well as some busy roads on the outward leg. Ride created to demonstrate that it was possible to have a flat ride from Dulwich.  Trick is to follow the River Effra valley\, going via Brockwell Park and Brixton. Last did this ride Sept 1st 2018 (see report).  Will have a stop on Vauxhall Bridge to note where the  Effra was marked as flowing into the Thames next to MI6. Cannot do this any more as marked exit covered up due to Tideway Sewer works. Anyway\, this is not where the Effra mostly enters the Thames – find out more here (http://vauxhallhistory.org/river-effra-jon-newman/).  Note Effra was buried in a sewer by Bazalgette in the mid-1860s. Route at http://tinyurl.com/y7ul6r9r and GPX at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/spring-summer-2019.html

DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be at the junction of Southwark Bridge Road and Sawyer St. The evidence they collect of illegal speeding (no\, I don’t believe it either) is persuading the Met to bring out it’s weapons-grade speed guns and issue fines. A little late\, we plan to celebrate with a ride around sights associated with the great engineer.  Bound to include the memorial on Victoria Embankment and the blue plaque in St Johns Wood. Also a ride past the Institute of Civil Engineers\, whose president he was.   \nMore notes on route: out over Waterloo Bridge; CS3 on top of Victoria Embankment and Bazalgette Memorial\, St Margaret’s Westminster where he got married; Institute of Civil Engineers in Gt George St\, where he was president (report at time:  “appropriately his presidential address discussed ‘those engineering works which promote the health and comfort of the inhabitants of large cities\, and by which human life may be preserved and prolonged'” – sounds like he was a supporter of bike lanes; Hyde Park; A bit of Q12; Pushing the boundary into St John’s Wood and a look at his blue plaque; Stop in Regent’s Park; Dysfunctional pump in Broad(wick) St and Golden Square; Probably back over London Bridge. \nWill be the usual easy-paced ride.  Everyone welcome\, just turn up with your bike\, and note that all our rides are free. \nNB we are also doing a longer Bazalgette 2 ride on April 22nd\, Easter Monday.  Check the Events listing for details.

SUMMARY:bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:Free and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in.. What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. These evening bike-fixing sessions are a joint venture between Southwark Cyclists and Lettsom Tenants & Residents Association and are held in the TRA hall. That’s not a super-easy thing to find so a useful picture of the hall is included.

SUMMARY:Tour de Rotherhithe 2019 - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Rotherhithe is blessed with lots of off road paths beside docks\, along the Thames\, through parks and along canals.  It is also completely flat.  So ideal for an easy-paced\, gentle ride.  Route meanders across to Southwark Park then heads to the Salter Statues on the river.  A 4km stretch along the Thames Path as far as Deptford Strand then inland to the Surrey Canal Linear Park and on to South Dock and Greenland Dock. Next an exploration of Russia Woodland ending at Stave Hill. Stop to climb the hill and take in the view. Back to Canada water via Surrey Water.\nThis is really interesting ride with lots to see and is a good ride for less experienced cyclists as so much is traffic free.\nLast did this ride June 10th\, 2917\, see report.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Policemen driving around tend to underestimate the amount of speeding because\, surprise\, surprise\, motorists don’t break the law so often with a policeman on their tail. Southwark Cyclist volunteers working with the Met have opened their eyes. The civilian-held speedguns found so much speeding that the real police have started using speed guns themselves and handing out real fines. \nYou can do your bit. Councillors rely on police estimates of speeding when deciding where to put the traffic calming and road closures. To join in mail PCSO Kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will send you a list of dates and times for March to choose from. It’s fun and worthwhile.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteers are working with the police to reduce illegal speeding on our roads. Community Speedwatch is a co-operation between the community (represented by us) and the Met. The community volunteer holds the speedgun and shouts out the numbers and PCSO Kevin Phillips writes down the registration numbers and makes. Then he looks up the drivers using Automatic Numberplate Recognition and they all get threatening letters. They are catching so many that the traffic police are getting involved with their own speedguns and handing out real fines. \nThis is worthwhile and a lot of fun. To join in mail kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will welcome you aboard with a list of dates and times to choose from. Give it a try.

DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists’ volunteers represent the community and PCSO Kevin Phillips represents the police. Together they spot speeding drivers and send them threatening letters. This is good.
