SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. \nA talented new member has located a pub so that is one problem out of the way. Stay after the meeting\, tell us what’s wrong with it (the meeting not the pub) and  what to do about it.

SUMMARY:Dulwich Park to Ladywell Fields - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Start/finish at Dulwich Clock Cafe in Dulwich Park SE21 7BQ      Easy-paced ride through 4 cemeteries\, 2 parks and 2 “Fields”.  Bit of up and down\, but nothing heroic. Initially up to Peckham Rye Park\, then through Nunhead Cemetery.  Over the railway to Brockley and Ladywell Cemetery then up to the top of Hilly Fields and a chance to admire the view back to central London.  From Hilly Fields down to Ladywell Fields and along National Route 21 towards Catford. Bit before Catford Bridge Station head for home\, across the railway from Eddystone Road\, then through Camberwell New Cemetery and along Brenchley Gardens to Camberwell Old Cemetery. Finally Underhill Rd\, across Lordship Lane and through estate roads to Dulwich Park. Cemeteries make excellent cycle routes – nice paved paths and few pedestrians. Overall a lot of the ride is off road\, plenty quiet streets\, a few busy intersections. Route at http://tiny.cc/vgfpbz

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Our team will be at Herne Hill\, near the junction with Holmdene Avenue\, speed guns at the ready. Those caught in their sights get fierce letters with fierce threats of personal attention from the Met. The record for the most reckless driver of the year was briefly held by a motor bike caught pulling a wheelie uphill at 53mph while over taking a car in Dulwich Wood Park. It’s now been overtaken by a motorbike caught doing 73mph in Herne Hill going the wrong way around a bollard\, over-taking many vehicles and approaching a bend. \nTo join in email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk or email southwark@lcc.org.uk\, tweet @southwarkcycle or text me on 07842 640 207. I may not know but I can probably find out.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:A Southwark Cyclists’ volunteer and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be at the junction of Half Moon Lane and Village Way with their speed guns. The speed limit is 20 and violators will receive fierce letters from the Met promising close attention to their number plate in case of further misdeeds. Worth a bit of effort I feel. To join in email kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk. To contact us email southwark@lcc.org.uk\, tweet @southwarkcycle or text me on 07842 640 207. SUMMARY:Free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:If it’s been a few weeks since you came\, you need to know that the venue has changed. All those who came to the last one already know. It’s now in the cheerful and friendly Camberwell Leisure Centre in wonderfully named Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. The photo makes it look a bit grim but it’s a delightful building with cafe\, good staff and\, now\, great bike fixing. \nStill free and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in (see the earlier remarks about not attending every week). What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. They fix your bike and at the same time show you what to do and how you might do it yourself. The whole shebang is free\, cheerful and open to anyone. No ID checks. You need to bring a bike to get full benefit but you are welcome to come without one and watch. \nFor more info about this and future events\, email southwark@lcc.org.uk though that can be slow\, keep an eye on @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207. We are a borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign https://lcc.org.uk and everything we do is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Dr Bike on Cycleway 1 (as we are supposed to call it now)
DESCRIPTION:Renaming stuff is cheaper than building it\, we can all agree. Cycleway 1 aka Quietway one is south-east London’s safest and most direct route to the centre (and back). Our guys are will be at the Dunton Road/Lynton Road crossroads. That’s the one with advance release lights on a three-way junction.   \nOur guys will be fixing bikes for all-comers. This service is free and enthusiastic. The bigger your problem the happier they are. They carry small parts like cables but not big ones like wheels. For bike reconstruction you will be referred onto our (also free) bike maintenance and tuition service which runs indoors all year round (see September 3rd)

SUMMARY:Healthy Rides Picnic with Bexley Cyclists and others
DESCRIPTION:Meet in Greenwich Park at the bandstand\, up the hill\, bit to the east of observatory buildings\,  Lat\, Long 51.476547\, 0.002763.  From about 12 noon.  Most people will ride (see below) but non-riders are also welcome. \nThe ride to picnic with Bexley Cyclists starts at 10am in Dulwich Park (Dulwich Clock Cafe\, SE21 7BQ) and picks up riders in Peckham (10.30\, Peckham Square by Peckham Library\, SE15 5JR) and at Canada Water Library (11am\, Deal Porter Square\, opposite Canada Water Station). Meet-up in Greenwich Park is at the bandstand\, up the hill\, bit to the east of observatory buildings\,  Lat\, Long 51.476547\, 0.002763.  Route at http://tiny.cc/683raz   Aiming to reach there about 12 noon. \nWe all (or the more mature of us) sit down to eat (so remember to bring food and drink)\, but not before some games.  Maybe a slow cycling “race”\, longest track stand\, musical bikes\, who knows what else. \nWe are aiming to beat the turnout in 2018 when we held the picnic at the Thames Barrier and more than 60 people came (the photo shows some of them).  An amazing time was had by all. Last year’s report is here: https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-healthy-riders-on-picnic-ride/ — loads of photos and there’s a video too. Book the date – August 17th – and come along. \n

SUMMARY:Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:The usual wonderful set of guys fixing bikes and dispensing wise advice — mostly about the need to clean your chain. The effect of nagging is such that after five years of hearing them say this I have started doing it every now and again. \nThey are cheerful\, helpful\, knowledgeable and have lots of tools. They will be under or near Peckham Arch which is the big arch-shaped object at the south end of Surrey Canal Path or the north end of Rye Lane (see pic). \nDrop by and get them working for you. For more info or to join in email southwark@lcc.org.uk (slow method) or tweet @southwarkcycle. If they do their usual great job on your bike you could tweet that too.

SUMMARY:Freecycle ride to central London
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists will be leading a feeder ride to the Prudential Ride London event.  There will also be a led return.  Ride will be fully marshalled and suitable for all cyclists of any age. If you want to help you can volunteer here:  https://lcc.org.uk/articles/volunteer-as-a-lcc-ride-marshal-at-freecycle-2019 and there will be free training on July 20th. \nThe starting place is at the Cafe on the Rye in the middle of Peckham Rye Park for a 10am start. The cafe looks like this: \n \nThe cafe is actually on Strakers Road which used to be a road through the park. The map is distinctly unhelpful. I think the picture shows bits of the car park which used to be beside the cafe. where there is now a rather splendid playground. \nWe will meet a group from the north of the borough at Burgess Park Cafe (which is 200 Albany Road if you want to look at it on a google map) at 10.30am. A group from Crystal Palace are also expected to join us here and then we will all go on together to Southwark Bridge. \nAfter that it’s every man\, woman and child for themselves. The return ride from Southwark Bridge at 3pm is not at all compulsory but if you want to ride back with us as well then details will be finalised on arrival. \nRoute: https://cycle.travel/map/journey/110158\nStart point: Strakers Road\, Peckham Rye Park\, Peckham SE15 3UA\nEnd point: Southwark Bridge\nStart time: 10:00\nDistance: Five miles\nReturn ride start point: Southwark Bridge\nReturn ride start time: 15:00 \nMore info about the Freecycle is here: https://www.prudentialridelondon.co.uk/events/freecycle/ including a map of exactly which bits of central London are covered. We are part of the London cycling campaign but you don’t have to be to join. SUMMARY:Cutty Sark to Cody Dock - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:One of our faviourate places\, Cody Dock is tucked away off the River Lea not far from Canning Town. It is a community-led project to redevelop the old dock and open up parts of the Lower Lea.  Nice Cafe\, marvellous flowers\, a Damian Hurst and more.  We last visited in March when the weather was atrocious and we only did a ride through.  This time Amanda guarantees lovely weather so we can all fully enjoy this magical spot. Probable route will be east along the Thames Path past the O2 and the Flood Barrier\, then across the river on the Woolwich Ferry and round the Royal Docks dodging the planes taking off from City Airport. Up to the Greenway\, west to Stratford and on to the River Lea towpath. From Cody\, grotty bit past Canning Town\, then Canary Wharf\, the Isle of Dogs and the Greewich Foot tunnel.  Fabulous route.  Loads of it traffic free.  And pretty much flat. \nProbable route map: Cody_20jan18PART_1516380786867_IMG_9890

SUMMARY:free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition (new venue)
DESCRIPTION:Free and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in.. \nStill in Camberwell but a different bit. The new venue is Camberwell Leisure Centre in Artichoke Place (London’s most unforgettable address) (SE5 8TS).  The guys will be outside on sunny days and inside on chilly/wet ones. The times\, dates and everything else are unchanged. \nFor more info about this and future events\, email southwark@lcc.org.uk though that can be slow\, keep an eye on @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207. We are a borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign https://lcc.org.uk and everything we do is free and open to all.

\nWe still haven’t found a pub. Bring pub radar.  If you get lost shout loudly and someone will walk out and wave their arms around.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to South Norwood Country Park - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:Start at Dulwich Clock Cafe\, Dulwich Park\, SE21 7BQ.  Out via Peckham Rye Park and Beckenham Place Park. Back via Crystal Palace Park\, including dinosaurs.  Really pleased with this route. Nice mixture of off road path and quiet streets with very few bits of main road.  Uses the nicest stretch of Nat Route 21 from Catford to Bells Green – off road and very green.  There is time for a long loop around S Norwood Country Park – even greener\, and you may get to see a tram! Crystal Palace Park has a new\, enlarged\, Café which will be our Coffee Stop.  Then\, rested and re-fueled\, we are ready for the stiff climb through the park\, followed by the long downhill back to Dulwich.  Route at https://bit.ly/2IWt2NC
