SUMMARY:Peckham to the Quaggy River Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Peckham to the Quaggy River Healthy Ride\nNOTE. You must register on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/cycle-ride-from-peckham-to-lewisham-and-the-quaggy-river-tickets-1990140356379?aff=oddtdtcreator \nEasy-paced 2.5 hour ride\, mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks. Start/finish Peckham Square (next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY).\nThe Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne close to Lewisham station where much new development has taken place. We now have a small “Confluence Park” to highlight this built-in water feature. The ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert. At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings. Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) whose “goal is to demonstrate that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife into urban lives.”\nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65. Outward leg will use the northern\, less hilly route via Bridgehouse Meadows and Fordham Park to Brookmill Park where we see the River Ravensbourne and follow it to Lewisham. Return has a few short climbs that can be walked. Route goes up to Hilly Fields then past Brockley Station (possible coffee stop if time). Finally gentle climb to Nunhead and a long downhill back to Peckham. 16.5km\, just over 10 miles. Leader Bruce. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.  Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe. If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.  Remember things can\, and do\, happen on bike rides and we sometimes get delayed. A novel Thames loop using the Woolwich Ferry outbound and the Shuttle Bus for the return. Take an inland route via  The Den (Cycleway 10)\, through a section of Brookmill Park\, on to Blackheath and Charlton. Reach the Thames at Woolwich and if time do a stretch of the Thames Path to Galleons Reach and the Tor.  Return to Woolwich Arsenal and take a break before boarding the Woolwich Ferry to Silvertown. Head east via Barrier Park to the Shuttle Bus stop for the Silvertown Tunnel to North Greenwich. Final stretch Thames Path to Greenwich\, then a bit of Cycleway 4 to Grove St where will turn off and take a quiet route on to Canada Water. \nThere is about 20 miles of cycling including some hills. With the crossings may not be back before 2.30 pm. Forecast is for 29 degrees so dress appropriately\, apply sun cream and bring water (also snacks as long ride). \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. SUMMARY:Burgess Park to Albert Bridge Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Burgess Park to Albert Bridge\n. Please register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link:  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/burgess-park-to-albert-bridge-cycle-ride-tickets-1992867073062?aff=oddtdtcreator \nAlbert Bridge was recently found to be damaged by all the motor traffic and is now bikes and peds only. Yipee!  It will probably get fixed\, so let’s ride there while it is traffic free. Meet Burgess Park\, Stomping Grounds Café\, 10am. 11 mile circuit. Plan to be back at Burgess Park for 12.30.  Start heading west to Myatts Fields\, then across Stockwell (think bus garage) to Larkhall Park. Continue using newish cycle tracks on Thessaly Rd to Battersea Power Station and Battersea Park. Good place for a coffee before we cross Albert Bridge and take some photos. Return route will go along embankment to Lupus St\, then quietish streets to Horseferry Rd and Lambeth Bridge. Lambeth Bridge has been much improved\, new cycle lanes and the ridiculous roundabout on south side replaced by a cross roads. From this point cross to Old Paradise Gardens (think hidden gem) and Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery and into Lambeth Walk (please rehearse the song). Across to Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park taking care when passing the Imperial War Museum’s BIG gun. Then west bypass of the Elephant\, bit of cycleway 17 and back to our starting point in Burgess Park.  Loads to see on this ride and very few tricky bits. A good ride for less experienced riders. Bruce leading.
