SUMMARY:community speedwatch (2)
DESCRIPTION:Don’t think we’re picking on Salter Road or anything. It’s just that our cycling volunteers specially object to speeding around here. The man with the gun for this second outing of the day on Salter Road will be Werner who runs some of our Saturday rides about Victorian engineers. \nThis is always a popular spot with the guys — lots of law-breaking\, as anyone who cycles through here can testify. It’s a mutual protection society. Kevin protects Werner from irate drivers and Werner protects Kevin from irate members of the public (who want him to do more). To join in\, mail Kevin at Kevin.j.Phillips@met.police.uk and/or read https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/ for further useful information. \n

SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch (1)
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva will be wielding the speedgun at the junction of Salter Road and Lagado Mews. With him will be PCSO Kevin Phillips. Bob shouts out the speeds\, Kevin writes down the numbers and makes. You will not be surprised to know that in a two hour session they fill four pages of Kevin’s notebook. SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch
DESCRIPTION:Fed up with speeding? You can do something about it. Volunteer for Community Speedwatch. You can suggest times\, dates and locations. The community volunteer holds the speedgun and a PCSO writes down the numbers and makes of offending vehicles. Then he sends the details to TfL who sends owners cross letters. \nIf you think that that doesn’t sound tough enough then the Met agrees. Since seeing proof of speeding provided by the Community Speedwatch teams\, the Met has gone into the same line of business with a team of traffic policement equipped with legal-evidence level speedguns. Real tickets have been issued. \nTo join in email PCSO Kevin Phillips at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride+ from Burgess Park to Wandsworth Park
DESCRIPTION:Idea is to explore a bit further west on the south side of the river. Burgess Park is on the west edge of Southwark\, so the obvious place to start. Last did this ride on August 31st 2019\, see report at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-august-sept-2019.html.\nOutward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then round the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside\, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. If time\, could go a further ½ km and have a look at the rowers on the Putney Embankment. Coffee break in Wandsworth Park\, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course. Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek\, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park\, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. Fairly flat route\, 28km\, a lot of park and riverside traffic free.  Route at https://goo.gl/94U3Ve

SUMMARY:Peckham Healthy Ride to the Quaggy River\, Lewisham
DESCRIPTION:Easy-paced 2 hour ride\, this one mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks. Some gentle hills\, nothing extreme.\nThe Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne close to Lewisham station where much new development is taking place. The opportunity has been taken to open up this built-in water feature as “Confluence Park”. The ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert. At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings. What a contrast to the Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park which we will have seen earlier in the ride. Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) whose “goal is to demonstrate\, using the Quaggy\, that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife value into urban landscapes and urban lives.”\nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65. Outward leg goes via Brookmill Park\, return leg goes past the Lewisham Leisure Centre\, Brockley Station and Nunhead. 16.5km\, just over 10 miles.\nThis ride is part of the regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides organised by Southwark Cyclists\, the local branch of the London Cycling Campaign. SUMMARY:London Bridge to Walthamstow - Healthy Ride +
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Southwark Needle (located on SE corner of London Bridge\, at top of Duke St Hill\, adjacent to London Bridge Station) for a 3.5 hour easy ride to Walthamstow.  Waltham Forest Borough Council have won a hat full of awards for their “Mini-Holland” project to improve walking and cycling (good info on Waltham Forest Cycling Campaign web site). People go on tours to see the changes – filtered roads\, segregated lanes on major roads etc. Even some Southwark Councilors went to have a look!  So long past time for the healthy riders to see what all the fuss is about. \nRoute will be out across London Bridge and through the City to Shoreditch\, where we join Q13. This takes us to London Fields where we join Q2 all the way to Lee Bridge Rd. Along the mostly new segregated cycle lane on Lee Bridge Rd for 2 miles before turning off to Walthamstow VIllage. Coffee stop in the newly pedetriansed bit of Orford St. Return back to Lee Bridge Rd\, then through Leyton to the river Lea at Leyton Jubilee Park. Follow the segregated path on Orient Way to Temple Mills\, then off road past the Tennis and Hockey Centre into the Olympic Park next to the Velodrome.  Across the top end of the park\, out past the Copper Box and over the bridges across the River Lea and the A12 into Victoria Park. Nice wide path round to the Gunmakers Gate\, then quiet streets to Mile End Park along the Regents Canal. Almost immediately join CS2 and zoom to Aldgate where the route turns left down to Tower Bridge and along Tooley St to our starting point. A lot of the route is on Cycleways\, some in parks and some on quiet streets.  The only unsegregated busy roads are at the start as we cross the City. SUMMARY:Canada Water to North Greenwich - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Easy paced ride to see how far we can get along the Thames path heading east.  Thames path is now all open again after building work.  Some of the best cycle track you will ever see\, but also some very narrow bits.  Care needed on these stretches and giving way to pedestrians.  Hope to get to the Ecology Park. \nRoute starts by crossing Russia Woodland and joining the Thames Path at Greenland Passage. Good riverside path for a bit\, then the usual diversion inland around Convoys Wharf. Rejoin Thames at the Ahoy Centre and follow river past Cutty Sark and all the way round the peninsula. Should get well past the O2 and return across the peninsula to the blue bridge over the A102\, rejoining the Thames Path briefly at Enderby Wharf.  Detour inland around the Power Station for a change\, through the Naval College and back past Cutty Sark to the Deptford Creek foot bridge. Turn inland here to join Cycleway 1 at Bronze St and follow it for a mile to Blackhorse Rd. Cross A200 with care. Why there is no crossing on this stretch I do not know! Then Surrey Canal Linear Park and Greenland Dock back to Canada Water. \nLots to see on this flat route.  Route map at http://bit.ly/2uykRnc \nGpx filie here: Canada-Water-to-North-Greenwich-v2

Speeding seems to be as popular as ever and the diminished visibility isn’t putting anyone off. You can join in: mail Kevin on Kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk or read https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/66-in-a-20mph-zone/ for further information.

SUMMARY:free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:This is a drop-in not a course so what gets taught is pretty random. You bring the problems and the guys teach you how to fix them. This is the place to bring the bike covered in spiders which you found in your Mam’s shed. They also do less long term stuff like “How do I pump up these tyres?” (a question which puzzled me for a long time) and “Why does my chain keep coming off?” (it’s stretched and you need a new one and possibly a new set of cogs and sprockets) \nIt all takes place in the warm inside Camberwell Leisure Centre in Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. The leisure centre is very friendly with nice staff and a cafe. Bliss. \nThe sessions are run by Bruno on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. We campaign for safer cycling in Southwark. If you want to join in you can mail us at southwark@lcc.org.uk or tweet @southwarkcycle. Everything we do is free and as welcoming as we can make it.

SUMMARY:Dulwich to Streatham Common - Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:An undulating (might be considered “a bit hilly”) route on mostly quiet streets through Tulse Hill. Round the west part of the Streatham Common then up to the Rookery Cafe where if time a coffee break. Return up through the common to Leigham Court Rd then quiet streets to Norwood Park. Detour slightly to criss-cross the park then down to Gipsy Rd and the Paxton Roundabout.  Run down Alleyn Park back to start.  First ride to Streathem went well (see report) and the time poring over a countour map to get the flattest route paid dividends.  Route at http://tiny.cc/lw508y\n \ngpx route file: 1103_jwbeloxxh_Dulwich-to-Streatham-Common

SUMMARY:Dr Bike at Walworth Living Room
DESCRIPTION:Reduce\, re-use\, re-cycle. How about Repair? This is a skill-sharing event and we will be sending our pro-mechanic to share his skills and teach other people to fettle their bikes. This is a community event to draw on skills in the community to mend stuff and get stuff mended. My grandad used to mend his family’s shoes and clocks. My aunt made clothes for four children. Fixing broken things is very satisfying. The idea is to value some of those skills again. \nIt’s being held at the Walworth Living Room (see pic above) but probably indoors rather than out. This is a new community space in Walworth\, for eating\, learning\, playing\, working\, sharing a cup of tea and getting to know your neighbours. The heart of the building is the community kitchen\, with shared activity\, meeting and office spaces. \nWe are just working on the bike-fixing bits but anyone with a broken thing or skills in mending other (not too enormous) things should phone 020 7703 3803 to contact the organisers or just come along.

SUMMARY:monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:At our not-so-new venue at 41 Grosvenor Park SE5 0NH (see picture above). It’s much more respectable than it looks. Coming from Burgess Park\, cross Camberwell New Road and proceed in an westerly direction along Urlwin Street\, under the railway bridges\, left at the end and straight on into the cul-de-sac in front of you. Very respectable. Look carefully\, no 41 is slightly less respectable and belongs to the tenants association. That’s the place. No bike parking. Try the railings. \n \nThe alternative approach is via Addington Square\, across to Bethwin Street\, right into Grosvenor Terrace\, immediately right into Grosvenor Park \n Look for the cul-de-sac on your right at the end. If you are very lost shout loudly and someone will come out and wave their arms about to guide you home. We seem to have located a pub  I am glad to say. Travel hopefully and you will arrive.

SUMMARY:Explore Dulwich Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:First ride in 2020! Usual easy-paced ride on\, as far as possible\, quiet streets and paths. Do you really know Dulwich? Come and work off some calories while exploring this part of Southwark. Easy ride\, suitable for all types of cyclist. \nStarting from Dulwich Park we will head up to Dawsons Heights.  Great views from here of the skyline of central London and across to the northern part of Dulwich. Next to East Dulwich and the Dulwich Hamlets football ground.  When we first rode this route there was uncertainty about the future of this old (since 1890s) ground\, but it appears the future of Hamlets is now assured (for background read this). Next back though Dulwich Village and up College Rd to the tollbooth. Dulwich Estates charge a small toll on the south part of College Rd.  Is this the last working tollbooth in London? Now down to the south end of Dulwich to a castle. Yes\, Dulwich has a castle – or at least a Kingsdown House that looks just like a castle. Finally down to Belair Park and on to the Herne Hill Velodrome.  Alway lots of activity at the velodrome – on the track and the mountain bike trail plus plenty of children learning to ride in the area inside the track. From the velodrome just a short hop back through Dulwich Village and into Dulwich Park. Route at https://goo.gl/CJRHNu ; gpx file attached here: Explore_Dulwich
