SUMMARY:free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition cancelled
DESCRIPTION:Our guys will be in the cheerful and friendly Camberwell Leisure Centre in wonderfully named Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. It’s a delightful building with cafe\, good staff and\, now\, great bike fixing. \nFree and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in. What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. They fix your bike and at the same time show you what to do and how you might do it yourself. The whole shebang is free\, cheerful and open to anyone. No ID checks. You need to bring a bike to get full benefit but you are welcome to come without one and watch. \nFor more info about this and future events\, email southwark@lcc.org.uk though that can be slow\, keep an eye on @southwarkcycle or text 07842 640 207. We are a borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign https://lcc.org.uk and everything we do is free and open to all.

SUMMARY:community speedwatch (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva will be representing the community in a mutual protection society with PCSO Kevin Phillips. The only people angry about CSW are motorists. The community representation (Bob) shows that people without cars care about speeding and Kevin in full police uniform answers the charge that “if speeding mattered the police would do something about it”. Well they are. You can join in and help them. Email Kevin (see pic) on kevin..phillips@met.police.uk. You will get a warm welcome. SUMMARY:BH Monopoly Board Ride (postponed)

Likely to need refreshment during ride\, so there will be stops.  If you think this crazy idea is attractive\, then get it in to your diary.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Our Dr Bikes are cancelled until further notice. \nThe guys are back\, doing a basic overall bike check\, then any “small” fixes like adjusting brakes and gears\, checking chain wear\, offering advice if you need to take it to the shop\, the occasional hub bearing adjustment\, quick wheel true or cable replacement\, and whatever else can be done with hand tools. We have a professional mechanic that brings the tools and if there’s anything we’re not sure about\, he can help. \nWe’ll be under Peckham Arch (see pic) from 5.30-7.30pm. Everything is free and everyone is welcome. We small parts (sometimes) but big ones (like wheels) you need to bring with you. Just roll up. SUMMARY:Online Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month’s meeting will be held online. If you’d like to attend please contact us at southwark@lcc.org.uk. We will send you the invite prior to the meeting.\n \nJoin us for our April monthly meeting on Wednesday the 8th. \nThis month we will be discussing the next steps to our strategy\, see below for more details. \nOur meetings are formatted as follows. Feel free to come for the whole time\, or only the part you’re interested in. \n\n6:30pm to 6:20pm – All are welcome to our committee meeting where we discuss logistics and other admin topics.\n7:30pm to 8:30pm – Our general meeting where we give a brief campaigns update and discuss the topic above.\n8:30pm – We would normally head to the pub after the meeting\, but as that’s not currently possible\, we’ll be staying online for anyone that wants to chat and socialise.\n\n  \nLast Thursday\, the UK government quietly published its ‘Decarbonising Transport’ policy paper calling for a shift away from cars to public transport and active travel. Former Commons Transport Chair Lilian Greenwood commented\, “Right now all our energies are on tackling the coronavirus but when we come out the other side we have an equally serious emergency because emissions from transport have to be tackled if we are serious about turning around the future of the planet for coming generations.” \nJoin Southwark Cyclists’ General Meeting on Wednesday 8th April 7:30-8:30pm to brainstorm how we might decarbonise Southwark’s roads. We will build on our vision and strategic priorities to develop a roadmap for our 2025 goals. \nEveryone is welcomed. If you are interested in taking part\, please email us at Southwark@lcc.org.uk. We will send invitations with instructions on how to join the (now virtual) meeting ahead of time. \nIf you have any questions about our meetings\, contact us at southwark@lcc.org.uk

SUMMARY:community speedwatch (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Popular enthusiasm for Community Speedwatch is inspiring the Met to join in. Parts of the red routes are now 20 mph and anyone caught over 20mph can receive a fine.  The Met have been out in full force and handed over 100 speeding tickets around the New Kent Road fly over and other locations in the borough\,  where  speeds reached more than 40 mph.  PCSO Kevin Phillips is keen to get his willing volunteers involved. Today they will be on or near the junction of Half Moon Lane and Village Way. Wave hello or stop and chat encouragingly. To join in mail Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk

SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer Bob Eva and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be at the junction of Village Way and Half Moon Lane\, trusty speedgun at the ready. This is a good spot for catching speeders\, I’m told. The community volunteer wields the gun and Kevin writes down the numbers and makes of the speeders. Then he sends the info plus names and addresses to TfL which sends out rude letters. It’s fun and you can join in. Email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will sign you up to a date and location of your choice. He’s very affable but his disapproval of bad driving is strong.

SUMMARY:Southwark Climate Emergency conference (postponed)
DESCRIPTION:Due to fears over Coronavirus this conference has been postponed. No new date set.  \nSouthwark Council is holding a conference ‘Tackling the Climate Emergency’ today. This presents a real opportunity for residents\, community and environmental groups and stakeholders to get involved and contribute their feedback to the Council’s climate strategy while it is still at the draft stage. \nWe will be there. The conference will be at the William Booth Memorial College in Champion Park SE5 8BQ from 9.30-2.30 (includes lunch). The college is directly opposite Denmark Hill station and it’s not as grim as the picture makes it appear. This is hoped to be the first in a series of annual conferences to consider how to make the council be more environmentally friendly and the residents (us) as green as we would like to  be.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Free bike maintenance with hands-on tuition
DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \nThis is a drop-in not a course so what gets taught is pretty random. You bring the problems and the guys teach you how to fix them. This is the place to bring the bike covered in spiders which you found in your Mam’s shed. They also do less long term stuff like “How do I pump up these tyres?” (a question which puzzled me for a long time) and “Why does my chain keep coming off?” (it’s stretched and you need a new one and possibly a new set of cogs and sprockets) \nIt all takes place in the warm inside Camberwell Leisure Centre in Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. The leisure centre is very friendly with nice staff and a cafe. Bliss. \nThe sessions are run by Bruno on behalf of Southwark Cyclists. We are the borough branch of the London Cycling Campaign which campaigns for safer cycling in London. We campaign for safer cycling in Southwark. If you want to join in you can mail us at southwark@lcc.org.uk or tweet @southwarkcycle. Everything we do is free and as welcoming as we can make it. \n\n\n\n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

DESCRIPTION:The team will be at the junction of Croxted Road and the South Circular\, speedgun at the ready. The evidence of speeding that they provide has persuaded the Met to set its own speed traps. SUMMARY:community speedwatch (2)
DESCRIPTION:Don’t think we’re picking on Salter Road or anything. It’s just that our cycling volunteers specially object to speeding around here. The man with the gun for this second outing of the day on Salter Road will be Werner who runs some of our Saturday rides about Victorian engineers. \nThis is always a popular spot with the guys — lots of law-breaking\, as anyone who cycles through here can testify. SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch
DESCRIPTION:Fed up with speeding? You can do something about it. Volunteer for Community Speedwatch. You can suggest times\, dates and locations. The community volunteer holds the speedgun and a PCSO writes down the numbers and makes of offending vehicles. Then he sends the details to TfL who sends owners cross letters. \nIf you think that that doesn’t sound tough enough then the Met agrees. Since seeing proof of speeding provided by the Community Speedwatch teams\, the Met has gone into the same line of business with a team of traffic policement equipped with legal-evidence level speedguns. Real tickets have been issued. \nTo join in email PCSO Kevin Phillips at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk

SUMMARY:Healthy Ride+ from Burgess Park to Wandsworth Park
DESCRIPTION:Idea is to explore a bit further west on the south side of the river. Burgess Park is on the west edge of Southwark\, so the obvious place to start. Last did this ride on August 31st 2019\, see report at http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-august-sept-2019.html.\nOutward route will go via Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station to Battersea Park. Then round the park and on to the nice paths along the Battersea and Wandsworth riverside\, eventually reaching Wandsworth Park. If time\, could go a further ½ km and have a look at the rowers on the Putney Embankment. Coffee break in Wandsworth Park\, but sadly no time for a round on the well-maintained Crazy Golf Course. Return route has great contrasts. Back along the river to the bridge over Bell Lane Creek\, the mouth of the River Wandle. Then head south into Wandsworth town centre along shared use pavement and across cycle crossings to avoid the traffic on the 1-way system. Next King George’s Park with a nice path by the Wandle. At the south end of the park\, turn left and start heading home via Wandsworth and Clapham Commons. Fairly flat route\, 28km\, a lot of park and riverside traffic free.  Route at https://goo.gl/94U3Ve

SUMMARY:Peckham Healthy Ride to the Quaggy River\, Lewisham
DESCRIPTION:Easy-paced 2 hour ride\, this one mostly quiet roads with a few path sections through parks. Some gentle hills\, nothing extreme.\nThe Quaggy meets the Ravensbourne close to Lewisham station where much new development is taking place. The opportunity has been taken to open up this built-in water feature as “Confluence Park”. The ride will follow the Quaggy\, mostly hidden behind buildings in a sad concrete culvert. At Manor Park the river emerges\, but is still hidden away to start with\, although at the south end of the park you can get close on natural banks. Then to Manor House Gardens where the Quaggy is kept in a channel\, behind railings. What a contrast to the Ravensbourne in Brookmill Park which we will have seen earlier in the ride. Lots of information about the Quaggy on the web site of QWAG (Quaggy Waterways Action Group\, https://qwag.org.uk/river-quaggy/) whose “goal is to demonstrate\, using the Quaggy\, that rivers can be major assets to an urban environment – bringing natural beauty\, educational facilities and wildlife value into urban landscapes and urban lives.”\nRoute is at https://goo.gl/svHy65. Outward leg goes via Brookmill Park\, return leg goes past the Lewisham Leisure Centre\, Brockley Station and Nunhead. 16.5km\, just over 10 miles.\nThis ride is part of the regular Saturday morning Healthy Rides organised by Southwark Cyclists\, the local branch of the London Cycling Campaign.
