SUMMARY:Healthy Rides - Three more 6-person rides
DESCRIPTION:We are again offering 3 different rides on Saturday 11th July. As last week you MUST book using Eventbrite.  All 3 rides are included as a single event.  Note that this means the header information on Eventbrite covers the whole event and is not correct for any individual ride.  You should choose the ticket for the ride you want. You will find 6 places available for each ride.  Social distancing must be maintained during rides. \nThe Link is: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/healthy-cycle-rides-tickets-112379650560 \nImportant. If you are booked but find you cannot make the ride\, CANCEL on Eventbrite.  That way we do not wait around\, and possibly may be able to let an extra person on the ride.  Even at the very last minute it is worth cancelling as some riders keep a close eye on bookings right up to start time. \nNote because there are 3 rides with different end times and locations within this “Event” your Eventbrite ticket will give the overall timing and the SE16 post code for all 3 rides. The correct timings and locations are given in the details below. \nRide 1.  Canada Water to Blackheath and Greenwich. 10am to 12 noon. Simon leading. Start/finish in Deal Porter Square\, SE16 7AR. Chance to learn some local history on a route that includes lots of off road path. Outward leg on the Thames Path (Cycleway 14) to Greenwich\, then up the hill through Greenwich Park to the Observatory. Short loop on to Blackheath then back through Greenwich Park and on to Greenwich DLR Station. Pick up Cycleway 1 and take this to Millwall Ground (New Den). Then quiet streets to Southwark Park and on to Deal Porter Square. Approx. 11 miles\, just one hill (in Greenwich Park) that can be walked. \nRide 2. Dulwich to Crystal Palace. 10am to 12 noon. Bruce leading. Start/finish Dulwich Clock Cafe\, Dulwich Park\, SE21 7BQ. Relatively flat route to Crystal Palace Park\, then ride up through the park (having a look at the dinosaurs on the way and walking the steep bits). Finally glorious long downhill back to Dulwich Park. Ridden this route several times\, see report of our ride in the snow\, Feb 2nd 2019\, http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-jan-march2019.html.  Route https://goo.gl/rfUzwn. \nRide 3. Burgess Park to the Royal Parks. 10am to 1pm. Jane leading. Start/finish at Park Life Cafe\, Burgess Park\, Chumleigh St\, off Albany Rd. SE5 0RJ. 10am to 1pm. Route passes many famous places: South Bank\, Covent Garden\, Regents Park\, Hyde Park (probable coffee stop at Sports Centre)\, Green Park\, Birdcage Walk (next to St James Park)\, Houses of Parliament.  Ridden in January this year\, report at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2020/royal-parks-loop-healthy-ride/.  Route at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4989284.html. \nUnder 18s must bring a responsible adult with them. \nPart of regular series of Saturday morning rides organised by Southwark Cyclists\, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Bring 'n Fix It in Walworth (bikes included)
DESCRIPTION:We have a great mechanic at this Bring ‘n Fix it session at the Walworth Living Room (see pic). Bring a bike (any condition) and they will help you get it into better shape. There are guys fixing lots of other things too so you can bring those along as well. Despite the attractive-looking pavement in the pic\, this session is highly likely to be indoors.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva will be holding the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be writing down the registration numbers on Dog Kennel Hill near the junction with Quorn Road. Dog Kennel Hill does (probably) have a real connection with dogs in that Prince George of Denmark had kennels for his hounds here. However\, there is also a theory that an earlier landowner\, one Monsieur de Canel\, resided there\, and Dog Kennel is a heavily anglicized version of his name. Quorn is a sort of meatless meat but (more excitingly) The Quorn\, established in 1696\, is one of the world’s oldest fox hunting packs and claims to be the United Kingdom’s most famous hunt. I’m getting surreal pictures in my head. Bob and Kevin will not be getting that. They will be taking down numbers and dispatching displeasing letters to unhappy recipients. You can join in. Email Kevin (see pic) on kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and you will get a warm welcome.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: community speedwatch
DESCRIPTION:Salter Road gets a lot of attention from the Community Speedwatch teams. That’s because speeding drivers along here have a habit of handing out frights. Werner\, who leads some of our Healthy Rides and Bank Holiday specials\, doesn’t appreciate frights. He likes to get even. The result is a lot of speed measurement on Salter Road\, showing just how bad the driving is\, and just how much cyclists need protection from it. The team will be on Salter Road again today near the junction with Lagado Mews. They don’t need encouragement but a friendly wave is always nice.

It’s a delightful building with cafe\, good staff and\, now\, great bike fixing. \nFree and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in. SUMMARY:community speedwatch (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva will be representing the community in a mutual protection society with PCSO Kevin Phillips. The only people angry about CSW are motorists. The community representation (Bob) shows that people without cars care about speeding and Kevin in full police uniform answers the charge that “if speeding mattered the police would do something about it”. Well they are. You can join in and help them. Email Kevin (see pic) on kevin..phillips@met.police.uk. You will get a warm welcome. Today Kevin and Bob will be at or near the junction  of Dulwich Wood Park and Kingswood Road. Wave as you go by.

SUMMARY:BH Monopoly Board Ride (postponed)
DESCRIPTION:Still happening but certainly not on Easter Monday  any more \nWhen it happens this ride round London will visit every location on the Monopoly Board.  Werner leading.  Ride will start at a central location (probably Southwark Needle or South Bank\, check back for this and other details).  Route details nearer date.  Will be about 25 miles\, probably take 4-5 hours.  Although brought to you by the Healthy Ride team\, this is much longer than our usual rides\, but pace will be as easy as ever.  Likely to start early – provisionally 9am. Likely to need refreshment during ride\, so there will be stops.  If you think this crazy idea is attractive\, then get it in to your diary.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Our Dr Bikes are cancelled until further notice. \nThe guys are back\, doing a basic overall bike check\, then any “small” fixes like adjusting brakes and gears\, checking chain wear\, offering advice if you need to take it to the shop\, the occasional hub bearing adjustment\, quick wheel true or cable replacement\, and whatever else can be done with hand tools. We have a professional mechanic that brings the tools and if there’s anything we’re not sure about\, he can help. \nWe’ll be under Peckham Arch (see pic) from 5.30-7.30pm. Everything is free and everyone is welcome. We small parts (sometimes) but big ones (like wheels) you need to bring with you. Just roll up. For more info or to volunteer email southwark@lcc.org.uk or tweet @southwarkcycle. Or just come along and chat. \n

SUMMARY:Online Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This month’s meeting will be held online. If you’d like to attend please contact us at southwark@lcc.org.uk. We will send you the invite prior to the meeting.\n \nJoin us for our April monthly meeting on Wednesday the 8th. \nThis month we will be discussing the next steps to our strategy\, see below for more details. \nOur meetings are formatted as follows. Feel free to come for the whole time\, or only the part you’re interested in. \n\n6:30pm to 6:20pm – All are welcome to our committee meeting where we discuss logistics and other admin topics.\n7:30pm to 8:30pm – Our general meeting where we give a brief campaigns update and discuss the topic above.\n8:30pm – We would normally head to the pub after the meeting\, but as that’s not currently possible\, we’ll be staying online for anyone that wants to chat and socialise.\n\n  \nLast Thursday\, the UK government quietly published its ‘Decarbonising Transport’ policy paper calling for a shift away from cars to public transport and active travel. Former Commons Transport Chair Lilian Greenwood commented\, “Right now all our energies are on tackling the coronavirus but when we come out the other side we have an equally serious emergency because emissions from transport have to be tackled if we are serious about turning around the future of the planet for coming generations.” \nJoin Southwark Cyclists’ General Meeting on Wednesday 8th April 7:30-8:30pm to brainstorm how we might decarbonise Southwark’s roads. We will build on our vision and strategic priorities to develop a roadmap for our 2025 goals. \nEveryone is welcomed. If you are interested in taking part\, please email us at Southwark@lcc.org.uk. We will send invitations with instructions on how to join the (now virtual) meeting ahead of time. \nIf you have any questions about our meetings\, contact us at southwark@lcc.org.uk

SUMMARY:community speedwatch (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Popular enthusiasm for Community Speedwatch is inspiring the Met to join in. Parts of the red routes are now 20 mph and anyone caught over 20mph can receive a fine.  The Met have been out in full force and handed over 100 speeding tickets around the New Kent Road fly over and other locations in the borough\,  where  speeds reached more than 40 mph.  PCSO Kevin Phillips is keen to get his willing volunteers involved. Today they will be on or near the junction of Half Moon Lane and Village Way. Wave hello or stop and chat encouragingly. To join in mail Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk

SUMMARY:Community Speed Watch (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist volunteer Bob Eva and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be at the junction of Village Way and Half Moon Lane\, trusty speedgun at the ready. This is a good spot for catching speeders\, I’m told. The community volunteer wields the gun and Kevin writes down the numbers and makes of the speeders. Then he sends the info plus names and addresses to TfL which sends out rude letters. It’s fun and you can join in. Email Kevin at kevin.j.phillips@met.police.uk and he will sign you up to a date and location of your choice. He’s very affable but his disapproval of bad driving is strong.

SUMMARY:Southwark Climate Emergency conference (postponed)
DESCRIPTION:Due to fears over Coronavirus this conference has been postponed. No new date set.  \nSouthwark Council is holding a conference ‘Tackling the Climate Emergency’ today. This presents a real opportunity for residents\, community and environmental groups and stakeholders to get involved and contribute their feedback to the Council’s climate strategy while it is still at the draft stage. \nWe will be there. The conference will be at the William Booth Memorial College in Champion Park SE5 8BQ from 9.30-2.30 (includes lunch). The college is directly opposite Denmark Hill station and it’s not as grim as the picture makes it appear. This is hoped to be the first in a series of annual conferences to consider how to make the council be more environmentally friendly and the residents (us) as green as we would like to  be.

DESCRIPTION:This event has been cancelled. \nThis is a drop-in not a course so what gets taught is pretty random. You bring the problems and the guys teach you how to fix them. This is the place to bring the bike covered in spiders which you found in your Mam’s shed. They also do less long term stuff like “How do I pump up these tyres?” (a question which puzzled me for a long time) and “Why does my chain keep coming off?” (it’s stretched and you need a new one and possibly a new set of cogs and sprockets) \nIt all takes place in the warm inside Camberwell Leisure Centre in Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. The leisure centre is very friendly with nice staff and a cafe. Bliss. \nThe sessions are run by Bruno on behalf of Southwark Cyclists.
