DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclists volunteer\, Werner\, will be holding the speedgun on Salter Road between 11am and 1pm. This is the first time back on the road for Speedwatch for more than five months. The volunteers\, organised and supported by PCSO Kevin Phillips\, target known rat-runs and race-tracks suggested by the public. \nVolunteers get training on how to work the speedgun and protection from angry motorists. Even at the last minute it is worth cancelling. \nPhilippa leading. Canada Water start/finish\,  Easy-paced ride\, 3.5 hours\, finish 1.30pm. Coffee break at the Pear Tree Café in Battersea Park. Out along the Thames path route via Borough Market and Tate Modern to Blackfriars Bridge. Cycleway 3 to Westminster then back streets to Chelsea Bridge to cross back.  Loop through new stuff at the Power Station then into Battersea Park for a break. Return along Thames – mostly road\, some riverside path – to National Theatre. From there Cycleway 1\, quietish streets and Southwark Park to Canada Water.  Probable route at https://goo.gl/eNvKSi.  Ridden this route a few times\, most recently June 15th 2019 (see report http://healthyrider.weebly.com/healthy-ride-reports-june-july-2019.html). \nWe will keep everyone as safe as possible by observing all the Covid Regulations. Most importantly we will be maintaining routinely a 2m social distance\, never less than 1m. Particularly important to maintain social distancing from other users on shared paths.  Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users can maintain 1-2 m and feel safe. Greenwich to Canada Water via Wapping and Tower Bridge.  10am to 12 noon. Simon leading. This 8 mile ride is making history for the Healthy Rides. First it is not going to finish where it starts. Second it will involve a trip on the DLR.  Meet in front of Greenwich (main) station in Greenwich High Road\, next to Novotel Hotel\, NOT the DLR station where there are stairs. Catch DLR\, platform 3 to Mudchute\, about a 6 minute ride. (Anyone wanting to meet at Mudchute Stn. be there by 10.10). Skirt Mudchute Park to Westferry Road\, on through Wapping to St Katherine’s Dock\, over Tower Bridge to end at Canada Water Library (Deal Porter Square). Mixture of (quiet) main road\, CS3\, cobbles & Thames Path. We are using DLR to cross the river\, as lifts not working in Greenwich foot tunnel. With the selected stations\, no stairs or lifts\, just some ramps. Philippa leading. Start/finish in Deal Porter Square\, SE16 7AR. Outward leg on the Thames Path (National Route NR4) to Blackfriars\, then across Blackfriars Bridge. Continue CW3 round the Embankment to Westminster Bridge and Millbank\, then use NR4 through Pimlico to Chelsea Bridge. Re-cross river to Battersea Park and a well-earned coffee stop at the Pear Tree Café by the lake. Return starts by leaving Battersea Park under the bridge to the new development around the Power Station. Follow the route through this to Battersea Park Road\, then via Vauxhall and an inland route south of the river back to Canada Water.  Flat 15 mile ride passing lots of interesting stuff. Peckham to Brixton Mill.  10am to 12 noon.  Bruce Leading. Start/finish in Peckham Square\, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre\, SE15 5RY. 10 mile circuit on mostly quiet streets. Start along Canal Path and across Burgess Park\, then Wyndham Rd\, Myatts Fields\, Slade Gardens\, Ferndale Road and eventually Brixton Windmill. Chance to learn some local history on a route that includes lots of off road path. Outward leg on the Thames Path (Cycleway 14) to Greenwich\, then up the hill through Greenwich Park to the Observatory. Short loop on to Blackheath then back through Greenwich Park and on to Greenwich DLR Station. Pick up Cycleway 1 and take this to Millwall Ground (New Den). DESCRIPTION:Southwark Cyclist Bob Eva will be holding the speedgun and PCSO Kevin Phillips will be writing down the registration numbers on Dog Kennel Hill near the junction with Quorn Road. Dog Kennel Hill does (probably) have a real connection with dogs in that Prince George of Denmark had kennels for his hounds here. However\, there is also a theory that an earlier landowner\, one Monsieur de Canel\, resided there\, and Dog Kennel is a heavily anglicized version of his name. Quorn is a sort of meatless meat but (more excitingly) The Quorn\, established in 1696\, is one of the world’s oldest fox hunting packs and claims to be the United Kingdom’s most famous hunt. I’m getting surreal pictures in my head. Bob and Kevin will not be getting that. They will be taking down numbers and dispatching displeasing letters to unhappy recipients. You can join in. DESCRIPTION:Salter Road gets a lot of attention from the Community Speedwatch teams. That’s because speeding drivers along here have a habit of handing out frights. Werner\, who leads some of our Healthy Rides and Bank Holiday specials\, doesn’t appreciate frights. He likes to get even. The result is a lot of speed measurement on Salter Road\, showing just how bad the driving is\, and just how much cyclists need protection from it. The team will be on Salter Road again today near the junction with Lagado Mews. They don’t need encouragement but a friendly wave is always nice.

DESCRIPTION:Our guys will be in the cheerful and friendly Camberwell Leisure Centre in wonderfully named Artichoke Place SE5 8TS. It’s a delightful building with cafe\, good staff and\, now\, great bike fixing. \nFree and everyone welcome. It’s not a course\, it’s a drop-in. What gets taught depends on what problems you bring in. The guys that do it are well known greats from our summer-time Dr Bikes at Peckham Arch and on Quietway 1. They fix your bike and at the same time show you what to do and how you might do it yourself. The whole shebang is free\, cheerful and open to anyone. No ID checks. SUMMARY:BH Monopoly Board Ride (postponed)
DESCRIPTION:Still happening but certainly not on Easter Monday  any more \nWhen it happens this ride round London will visit every location on the Monopoly Board.  Werner leading.  Ride will start at a central location (probably Southwark Needle or South Bank\, check back for this and other details).  Route details nearer date.  Will be about 25 miles\, probably take 4-5 hours.  Although brought to you by the Healthy Ride team\, this is much longer than our usual rides\, but pace will be as easy as ever.  Likely to start early – provisionally 9am. Likely to need refreshment during ride\, so there will be stops.  If you think this crazy idea is attractive\, then get it in to your diary.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Dr Bike under Peckham Arch
DESCRIPTION:Our Dr Bikes are cancelled until further notice. \nThe guys are back\, doing a basic overall bike check\, then any “small” fixes like adjusting brakes and gears\, checking chain wear\, offering advice if you need to take it to the shop\, the occasional hub bearing adjustment\, quick wheel true or cable replacement\, and whatever else can be done with hand tools. We have a professional mechanic that brings the tools and if there’s anything we’re not sure about\, he can help. \nWe’ll be under Peckham Arch (see pic) from 5.30-7.30pm. Everything is free and everyone is welcome. We small parts (sometimes) but big ones (like wheels) you need to bring with you. Just roll up. DESCRIPTION:This month’s meeting will be held online. If you’d like to attend please contact us at southwark@lcc.org.uk. We will send you the invite prior to the meeting.\n \nJoin us for our April monthly meeting on Wednesday the 8th. \nThis month we will be discussing the next steps to our strategy\, see below for more details. \nOur meetings are formatted as follows. Feel free to come for the whole time\, or only the part you’re interested in. \n\n6:30pm to 6:20pm – All are welcome to our committee meeting where we discuss logistics and other admin topics.\n7:30pm to 8:30pm – Our general meeting where we give a brief campaigns update and discuss the topic above.\n8:30pm – We would normally head to the pub after the meeting\, but as that’s not currently possible\, we’ll be staying online for anyone that wants to chat and socialise.\n\n  \nLast Thursday\, the UK government quietly published its ‘Decarbonising Transport’ policy paper calling for a shift away from cars to public transport and active travel. Former Commons Transport Chair Lilian Greenwood commented\, “Right now all our energies are on tackling the coronavirus but when we come out the other side we have an equally serious emergency because emissions from transport have to be tackled if we are serious about turning around the future of the planet for coming generations.” \nJoin Southwark Cyclists’ General Meeting on Wednesday 8th April 7:30-8:30pm to brainstorm how we might decarbonise Southwark’s roads. We will build on our vision and strategic priorities to develop a roadmap for our 2025 goals. \nEveryone is welcomed. If you are interested in taking part\, please email us at Southwark@lcc.org.uk.
