SUMMARY:A Trio of (ex)-Power Stations
DESCRIPTION:A Trio of (ex)-Power Stations\nPlease register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-trio-of-ex-power-stations-bike-ride-tickets-1391591951989?aff=oddtdtcreator \nBruce leading a circuit to Tate Modern\, Lots Road and Battersea Power. The large power station buildings have been preserved for these three. The uses of the sites are now very different – an art gallery\, largely residential and a mixed residential and retail/leisure development.  Chance to compare the different fates of these landmark sites and consider if they are now contributing as much as when they kept the lights on and the tube system running. \nRide starts 10am from Burgess Park (Stomping Grounds Café\, Chumleigh Gdns). Back streets/Cyclway to Tate Modern followed by a long ride to Lots Road via the Imperial War Museum\, Vauxhall Bridge and the embankment. From Lots Rd\, across Albert Bridge and through Battersea Park (probable refreshment break) to Battersea Power Station. Then back to Burgess Park via Thessaly Rd\, Larkfield Park and quiet streets across Stockwell.  21km\, 13 miles\, flat. Should be back around 1pm allowing for look around time at each power station. Probable route at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1EvmwKPUQbLmT7TY4ICGVJhXzThhOZfY&usp=sharing \n

Route up Greendale\, Ruskin Park\, Wyck Gardens (Ebony Horse Club)\, Clapham Common\, Blenheim Gardens Estate (Brixton Windmill)\, Brockwell Park\, Belair Park and back to Dulwich Park. SUMMARY:Epping Forest Ramble
DESCRIPTION:Epping Forest Ramble  \nPlease register for rides on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/epping-forest-ramble-southwark-healthy-ride-tickets-1391596836599?aff=oddtdtcreator \nOwen seems determined to get us all out into the Essex countryside. Following his successful Essex Ramble last month (https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/healthy-ride-reports-2025/ride-reports-3rd-may-2025/) he has devised another. We are heading to Epping Forest this time. A 27km (16 miles) circuit from Chingford to Epping and back. Farthest point on the ride will be at Epping Signalling Museum. Coffee stop will be at High Beech. Other places of interest we will stop at will be Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge and Connaught Water. The ride will start at 9.30am at Chingford Station and will finish at approximately 1.30pm back at Chingford Station.  We are mostly off road – 70% on gravel\, 5% on grass. Just 25% on tarmac (paths and road). We think a Brompton would be OK. However NOT a road bike with slim wheels\, need hybrid size tyres with plenty grip.  Sections of the route are “undulating” and overall it will be a challenging ride\, A reasonable level of fitness will be needed.  GPX file of route at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/route-for-epping-forest-ramble/ \nGetting to Chingford from Central London. Obvious option is Overground (Weaver Line) from Liverpool St. 27 min ride\, trains every 15 min\, fare £3.60. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.

Start at Cutty Sark Gardens\, 9.30 am (note early start time). How to cancel: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/help/en-gb/articles/557726/how-to-cancel-or-delete-a-free-order/.  Remember finish times are approximate and it is best not to schedule something immediately after the ride; give yourself an allowance for mechanical or other problems on the ride. \n

SUMMARY:Upminster to Southend Healthy Ride
DESCRIPTION:Upminster to Southend Healthy Ride\nNOTE. Please register for the ride on Eventbrite so we can limit numbers\, link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/upminster-to-southend-cycle-ride-tickets-1526787856579?aff=oddtdtcreator \nThe ride starts at Upminster library at 9.30am. We head East into the Essex countryside. Our first stop at 11 miles is Langdon Discovery Centre (Essex Wildlife Trust).  Our second stop at 20 miles is at Hadley Park café.  At 25.5 miles is Southend seafront our destination and our lunch break.  Aim to be at Southend by 12.30. Give ourselves an hour for lunch and set off back at 1.30. Those that want to leave the ride at this point can catch the c2c train from Southend Central back to London. Trains run every 20 minutes.  The journey back traces much of the route outbound but we will have only one stop roughly half way at the Langdon Discovery Centre. We’ll then return to Upminster library after a short break aiming to arrive there about 4.30. \nUpminster station is step free. In Zone 6\, longish journey on District line (e.g. Monument\, 42min\, £3.70). Bit quicker on c2c from Fenchurch St\, 22min\, £3.80). Upminster Library is 400m south of the station\, mostly along busy Station Road.  GPX route map:.Upminster_to_Southend_3 \nPersonal memories of Southend from Ride Leader Owen \nI remember as a 9 year old boy\, a recent immigrant from Hong Kong with virtually no English\, being woken up in the middle of a cold winter’s night to go fishing. After wiping the sleep from my eyes I joined my father and our compassionate elderly neighbour\, a keen fisherman\, to drive down to Southend to fish off the end of the pier.  Still in pitch darkness we dropped lines with about half a dozen hooks on each line into the water. When the tide came in we pulled in our lines and there were two\, three\, four flat fish on each line. \nFish were plentiful in those days and the town was a major holiday destination. Southend today may not glisten the way it used to but on sunny summer weekends thousands of day trippers still pack the promenades. You hear Chubby Chequer being belted out from arcades along with the ping\, ping\, ping sound of pinball machines and the occasional crashing of coins as a lucky punter registers a winning line on the fruit machine. You hear choruses of screaming from those on fairground rides. Every kid seems to be holding a candy floss or an ice cream cone and every adult has a big grin on their face.  Best of all is the ubiquitous seductive aroma of fish and chips with lashings of malt vinegar and pickled onions wafting along the seafront.\nSouthend seafront is still an amazing place to visit. Southend still touches my heart.\nWhat are your memories of Southend? Better still join me on my bike ride from Upminster to Southend and back. \nGeneral Information.   \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Southwark Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Same for “adults at risk”. Always give way to pedestrians and to other cyclists so all path users feel safe.  If you cannot make a ride\, please cancel so that someone else can take the place.   Remember finish times are approximate and it is best not to schedule something immediately after the ride; give yourself an allowance for mechanical or other problems on the ride. \nThese rides are part of a regular programme of Saturday rides\, more information at https://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/healthy-rides/. \nNote. So please only attend rides for which you have registered on Eventbrite. \nStart 9.30 am at London Bridge (The Southwark Needle\, south side). Estimated finish 1:00pm. Amanda leading a circular ride. Out along the south side of the river and over Westminster Bridge\, then Horseguards and the Mall and through Hyde Park to Kensington Palace. Return via Battersea Park and the Power Station. Final stretch back along the river and C14. Coffee break\, probably at Black Cab Cafe\, 9 Elms Lane.  As usual keeping to the quieter streets. Lots and lots to see. About 15 miles and flat\, so we are giving ourselves plenty of time for a nice easy-paced ride. Start/finish Peckham Square\, next to Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse Leisure Centre. Bruce leading his award winning ride on a 9 mile loop through parks and open spaces where hopefully we will see some butterflies. Ride coincides with the Big Butterfly Count.  We will not be counting but will visit good places to count if you are inspired to return. Main sites to be visited: Peckham Rye Park (wildflower meadow)\, Ruskin Park (Nature Reserve)\, Myatts Fields (wild area)\, Burgess Park.  Easy ride with plenty of time allowed for hunting for butterflies. Route at http://goo.gl/v14knG . Deliberately making this s short ride with no coffee break. This was our default format for years and will still suit some riders. I will be getting a coffee at the finish if anyone wants to join me and chat before heading home. SUMMARY:London’s Water Supply – a Healthy Ride++
DESCRIPTION:London’s Water Supply – a Healthy Ride++\nNOTE. If rides are full go on the Wait List.  Do not turn up for rides if you have not been able to register.. \nOn August Bank Holiday (Aug 25th) Werner has planned another epic bank holiday ride. The theme this time is our water supply.  Ride will start 9am (note early start time) from London Bridge (Southwark Gateway Needle\, south side of bridge\, close to London Bridge station). Plan is to ride a 70km (42 mile) loop initially heading west crossing the Thames over Chelsea Bridge and continuing to Shepherds Bush. Then turn east and we ride via Hyde Park and Soho to Clerkenwell. Next segment follows the New River north to Woodberry Down then cuts across to Walthamstow Wetlands. Finally we head south through Hackney to London Bridge. Highlights will be \n– London’s most (in)famous pump\n– infrastructure intended to compete with gin palaces and pubs\n– a tower which provided water for Charlie Chaplin\n– the world’s largest barometer\n– London’s newest river\n– a fake castle\n– the park where\, hidden away\, is a reservoir which featured in Bond and Paddington films. \nWill be a fascinating ride mostly on often busy urban roads. And it is long. We estimate 7-8 hours\, so finish possibly not before 5pm. There will be at least 2 substantial coffee/loo breaks and several stops at points of interest. Bring water\, lots if it is warm. Food will be available at some stops but often easier to bring your own and avoid queues. Please remember you will be riding at a steady pace for 6-7 hours so need a decent level of fitness. And check the bike carefully\, pump the tyres hard\, give it a lube and bring a spare inner tube. \nLikely route: .Watersupply-CW \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Rride the entire Wandle Trail on a Saturday morning starting from London Bridge (Southwark Needle\, south east side of London Bridge). In fact we are going to cheat a bit by ending the ride at East Croydon Station. So bring your Travel Pass or equivalent to get home by train.  This ride is Amanda’s idea and she will be leading. Total ride distance is 19 miles and we are planning to finish by 2pm following a 9am start. This should allow time for looking around at some of the interesting parts of the Trail and having a coffee break. Parts of the trail are not surfaced and can be quite uneven\, so difficult on narrow wheels with tyres inflated hard. \nRoute outline. From London Bridge take Cycleway 10 to Waterloo.  Over Westminster Bridge and along the cycle lane on the embankment to and over Chelsea Bridge and into Battersea Park. Thames Path to the start of the trail where the River Wandle meets the Thames.  Nice stretches include Abbey Water Mill\, Morden Hall Park\, Carshalton Ponds and Beddington Park. \nRiders of all ages are welcome on Healthy Rides but under 18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
